WPIAL girls basketball semifinal results from Tuesday, March 1st:
Knoch 56 Southmoreland 45 (Class 4A)
For the second straight season No. 2 Southmoreland came up a game short from reaching the WPIAL Class 4A finals, losing to No. 3 Knoch in the semifinals 56-45 at Gateway. The Knights controlled the game from the first quarter on, leading 12-7 through the first eight minutes and 27-15 at halftime. The Scotties (18-4) got to within 10 points after three but Knoch held a 20-19 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to finish the game. Gracie Spadaro collected 19 points to pace Southmoreland. Madilyn Boyer's 27 points and 10 rebounds powered the Knights (21-2) who will meet top-seeded Blackhawk in the district championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center. It's the first WPIAL title game appearance for Knoch. The Scotties season will continue in the PIAA playoffs.
WPIAL girls basketball quarterfinal results from Thursday, February 24th:
Seton-La Salle 47 Greensburg Central Catholic 30 (Class 2A)
No. 4 Greensburg Central Catholic was outscored 18-9 in the first quarter and couldn't recover in a 47-30 loss to No. 5 Seton-La Salle in a WPIAL 2A quarterfinal game. The Centurions were able to get to within seven points, down 31-24 after three quarters. But the Rebels held a 16-6 scoring edge in the fourth. Bailey Kuhns put up 13 points for GCC while Mya Morgan tossed in 12. Mallory Daly accounted for more than half of Seton-La Salle's points finishing with 34 points. The Rebels move on to play top-seed OLSH on Monday at a site and time to be determined.
WPIAL girls basketball quarterfinal results from Wednesday, February 23rd:
Bethel Park 42 Norwin 36 (Class 6A)
No. 4 Norwin squandered a nine-point halftime lead and suffered a 42-36 upset by Bethel Park in a WPIAL 6A quarterfinal game. The Knights were ahead 20-11 at halftime but saw the Black Hawks cut it to 30-28 after three. Riley Miller's three-pointer tied the game at 34-34 and shortly after Mary Boff connected on a layup and Ella Sabatos got a put back to put Bethel Park ahead 38-34 with 2:20 remaining. The Black Hawks would never trail again. Brianna Zajicek had 10 points for Norwin (15-7). Boff finished with 15 points for Bethel Park (12-9) which will play top-seed Mount Lebanon on Saturday in the semifinals at a site and time to be determined.
Uppper St. Clair 47 Penn-Trafford 32 (Class 6A)
No. 3 Upper St. Clair took firm control of the game in the first quarter, ahead 15-1 through the first eight minutes, to down No. 6 Penn-Trafford 47-32 in a WPIAL 6A quarterfinal contest. The Warriors (12-10) played fairly even with the Panthers the rest of the way but could not dig out of the early hole. Penn-Trafford's Olivia Pepple tossed in 14 points while Maura Suman added 12. Katelyn Robbins put up 17 points for the Panthers (19-4) who will square off with North Allegheny in the semifinals on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
