WPIAL girls soccer semifinal results from Tuesday, November 2nd:
Greensburg Central Catholic 6 Eden Christian 5
Jackson Vacanti's golden goal with 5:17 left in overtime capped off a thrilling victory for Greensburg Central Catholic as the top-seeded Centurions rallied to defeat No. 5 Eden Christian 6-5 in a WPIAL Class 1A boys soccer semifinal at West Mifflin. GCC overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-1 in the contest but kept fighting back. Carlo Denis netted a hat trick while Ryan Reitler notched a pair of goals. The Centurions played without one of their top players as Mason Fabean was ejected in their quarterfinal win over Riverside. Michael Oldenburg made six saves in the second half, coming in to replace Max House in goal to begin the second half. House was playing in his first game of the season after he had ACL surgery in the off-season. Greensburg Central Catholic (15-3-0) will play in its fourth straight WPIAL title game again facing Winchester Thurston. The teams have met in the last two title games with GCC winning last year 3-2 and 1-0 in 2019. The championship will be played on Friday against Winchester Thurston at 8 p.m. at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
WPIAL boys soccer quarterfinal playoff results from Saturday, October 30th:
North Allegheny 1 Norwin 0
Evan Anderson bumped a cross into the goal just over a minute into the game for No. 6 North Allegheny and the marker stood, as the Tigers defeated third-seeded Norwin 1-0 in a WPIAL 4A quarterfinal at Knights Stadium. The two teams had just met on October 19th with Norwin winning 4-2. This match, however, had a much more defensive tone to it. The Knights, who received a bye in the first round, post a 14-2-1 record to finish the season.
Greensburg Central Catholic 4 Springdale 0
No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic advanced to the WPIAL 1A boys soccer semifinals for the fourth straight year defeating No. 8 Springdale 4-0 in the quarterfinals at Norwin. The match was scoreless through the first 40 minutes of action but seven minutes into the second half, Kyler Miller scored on a cross from Jackson Vacanti to put GCC up 1-0. Only about 20 seconds later, Ryan Reitler was successful on a penalty to make it 2-0. Carlo Denis and Jake Gretz also tallied in the second half to close out the scoring. The Centurions top scorer, Mason Fabean, was held off the scoresheet and will also miss their semifinal game after being ejected late in the game due to a red card. Greensburg Central Catholic (14-3-0) meets No. 5 Eden Christian in the semis on Tuesday at West Mifflin High School at 6 p.m. Eden Christian (17-2-1) edged Bentworth 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
WPIAL boys soccer first round playoff results from Wednesday, October 27th:
Franklin Regional 6 Kiski Area 4
Despite being down early, third-seeded Franklin Regional regrouped and rallied for a 6-4 victory over No. 6 Kiski Area in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal match at Panther Stadium. The Cavaliers raced out to a 2-0 lead just 11 minutes into the contest on goals by Campbell Curry and Anders Bordoy. The Panthers, however, would reel off five unanswered goals. Dylan Tomb, Dom DiFalco and Colton Hudson each tallied in the first half to give Franklin Regional a 3-2 edge at the break. Just six minutes into the second half, DiFalco struck again on a free kick from 30 yards to tack on another goal for FR. Billy Christafano converted on a pass from Hudson to make it 5-2. Curry gave Kiski Area a chance with a marker not long after Christafano's score but Hudson answered with a goal with under 10 minutes left to increase the Panthers advantage to 6-3. Bordoy was successful on a penalty kick with 2:59 left to set the final at 6-4. Franklin Regional (15-3-0) will meet No. 2 Hampton in the semifinals on Monday. The Talbots (17-1-0) advanced following a close 1-0 victory against Moon on Wednesday.
WPIAL boys soccer first round playoff results from Tuesday, October 26th:
Fox Chapel 7 Penn-Trafford 0
Penn-Trafford's season came to an end as the 12th seeded Warriors were shutout at No. 5 Fox Chapel 7-0 in the first round of the WPIAL 4A playoffs. Penn-Trafford finishes the year with a 9-8-0 overall record.
Greensburg Central Catholic 8 Chartiers-Houston 0
Carlo Denis netted a hat trick plus added an assist to guide top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic to a first round 8-0 victory over Chartiers-Houston in the WPIAL 1A playoffs at Mount Pleasant. Jackson Vacanti also added a pair of goals and two assists for the defending champion Centurions (13-3-0) who will meet No. 8 Springdale in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Dynamos (11-4-1) topped Seton-La Salle 1-0 in the first round on Tuesday.
Winchester Thurston 5 Jeannette 0
Playing in its first WPIAL playoff game in its 24-year history, the Jeannette boys soccer team fell to second-seeded Winchester Thurston 5-0 in a WPIAL 1A first round match up at Shady Side Academy. The No. 15 Jayhawks finish their historic season with an 11-6-0 overall mark.
WPIAL boys soccer first round playoff results from Monday, October 25th:
Elizabeth Forward 6 Mount Pleasant 1
No. 12 Mount Pleasant was held to just one shot on goal in a 6-1 loss to No. 5 Elizabeth Forward in a WPIAL 2A first round match at Warrior Stadium. The Vikings lone goal came off the foot of Logan Rega in the second half. Mount Pleasant finishes the season with an 8-9-2 overall record.
Quaker Valley 5 Burrell 1
Tajean DeGore had the only tally for No. 15 Burrell in a 5-1 loss to second-seeded Quaker Valley in a WPIAL 2A first round battle at Quaker Valley. Cam Wagner was credited with an assist on DeGore's goal for the Bucs who end the year with a 7-8-0 overall record.
South Park 5 Yough 0
No. 16 Yough was shutout at No. 1 seed South Park 5-0 in the first round of the WPIAL 2A soccer playoffs. The Cougars finish the year at 7-11-0.
