Wildcats McIntyre earns first win in 3 OT thriller

Greater Latrobe first-year football coach Tom McIntyre earned his first victory in dramatic fashion on Friday, as the visiting Wildcats edged Plum 42-35 in three overtimes. AJ Yeboah rushed for 98 yards and scored touchdowns in each of the three OT periods for the Wildcats (1-1), while QB Dom Scarton went 12-of-20 for 140 yards and two TDs. In the defeat, Mustangs signalcaller John Nonnenberg went 17-of-29 for 165 yards and three scores. Plum missed a short field goal in the final minutes, resulting in overtime, and the Wildcats forced an incompletion on fourth down in the third extra period. Greater Latrobe will host Norwin in a nonconference clash on Friday at Memorial Stadium.

FR boys soccer notches pair of section wins

Franklin Regional boys soccer won a pair of crucial section showdowns last week, as the Panthers prevailed 3-2 at Penn-Trafford on Tuesday, and followed with a 3-0 triumph at home against Greater Latrobe two days later. Against the Warriors, FR jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the first half, courtesy of markers by Cruise Lamanna, Aiden Alexander, and Thomas Bridges. The Panthers held off a late charge by PT, which featured goals by Cooper Geyer and Noah Haslem. Against the Wildcats, Alexander, Bridges, and Fabrizzio Costa all scored. As a result, the Panthers improved to 3-0-0 overall, and they are tied atop Class 3A Section 3 with Belle Vernon Area at 2-0-0.

Chopp hired as Yough baseball coach

Andy Chopp, a Yough graduate, was approved last week as the new head coach of the Cougars baseball program. He fills the void left by the resignation of Dan Palm, who stepped down during the offseason after three years guiding Yough. Chopp previously served as an assistant coach at Ringgold, and he also boasts softball coaching experience with the Cougars, as well as at Penn-Trafford and Mount Pleasant Area. In the spring, the Cougars went 2-15 overall, failing to qualify for the WPIAL Class 3A postseason.

Former Southmoreland phenom Smith transfers to WV

Anthony Smith, who set records during his outstanding freshman football campaign at Southmoreland last year, has enrolled out of state to continue his career on the gridiron. Smith opted to transfer from the Scotties to Seton LaSalle in the offseason, but he was ruled ineligible to play for the Rebels this season by the WPIAL and PIAA. Now, he moves into the Fairmont School District in Fairmont, West Virginia. The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission allows one transfer without penalty, which provides Smith immediate eligibility for the campaign. Last year, Smith threw for 2,111 yards and 22 touchdowns for Southmoreland.

SHU grad Kintner to lead Bearcats WLAX

Last week, Saint Vincent College hired Makayla Kintner, a former Seton Hill University women’s lacrosse star, as the head coach of the Bearcats program. Kintner served as an assistant coach at SVC in the spring, working under previous head coach Joe Conner. During her five-year career with the Griffins, Kintner was a four-time All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First-Team honoree, and was twice recognized as the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, the Bearcats compiled a record of 3-12, including 1-8 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).
