Westmoreland County boys basketball results from Tuesday December 21, 2021:
McKeesport 51 Kiski Area 48 OT
Kiski Area suffered its first defeat of the season, losing a heart-breaker to McKeesport 51-48 in overtime in a Section 3-5A clash. Isaiah Gonzalez tallied 17 points to lead the Cavaliers (5-1, 1-1) who will play Connellsville in a non-section game on Thursday.
Woodland Hills 51 Franklin Regional 49
Franklin Regional erased a nine-point halftime deficit but couldn't come up with the victory, losing 51-49 at Woodland Hills in a Section 3-5A game. The Panthers were down 29-20 at halftime but closed the gap in the second half. Caden Smith dropped in a game-high 22 points for Franklin Regional (1-5, 0-2) while Fin Hutchison added 12 for FR.
Penn Hills 68 Greater Latrobe 57
Penn Hills held a 22-10 edge after one and Latrobe, despite playing better in the second half, couldn't recover as the Indians scored a 68-57 win in Section 3-5A play. The Wildcats were led by Landon Butler who tallied 21 points in the contest. Chase Sickenberger also reached double-figures with 10 points for Latrobe (0-6, 0-2) which hosts Greensburg Salem in a non-section contest on Thursday.
North Catholic 101 Derry Area 26
North Catholic exploded for 67 points in the first half and went on to blowout Derry Area 101-26 in a Section 1-4A contest. The Trojans were down 31-11 after one and trailed 67-19 at the break. Brady Angus led the offense with nine points for Derry Area (3-3, 1-1).
Burrell 66 Knoch 56
Brandon Coury went off, scoring 32 points for Burrell in a 66-56 triumph at Knoch in a Section 1-4A tilt. The Buccaneers pulled away in the second quarter, going on a 19-9 run to take a 36-23 advantage into halftime. In addition to Coury's 32 points, teammate Macky Bennis scored 22 for the Bucs (3-3, 1-1).
Belle Vernon 71 Yough 46
Four players finished in double-figures for Belle Vernon as the Leopards scored a 71-46 Section 3-4A victory at Yough. Belle Vernon was ahead 22-14 after one and extended its lead to 50-21 at halftime. Quinton Martin's 21 points paced the Leopards offense. Devin Whitlock came in with 16 points while Daniel Gordon scored 16 and Logan Cunningham tossed in 10 points for Belle Vernon (6-0, 2-0). Terek Crosby poured in 20 points for the Cougars (3-2, 0-2).
Mount Pleasant 46 South Park 43
Dante Giallonardo's basket with three seconds left capped off Mount Pleasant's fourth quarter comeback in a 46-43 victory over South Park in a Section 3-4A battle. The Vikings trailed 38-27 but outscored the Eagles 19-5 in the final frame. Giallonardo finished with 17 points while Braydin Caletri tallied 13 for Mount Pleasant (2-4, 1-1)
Uniontown 59 Southmoreland 56
Ty Keffer put up a 30-point effort for Southmoreland but the Scotties fell just short, losing 59-56 to Uniontown in a Section 3-4A match up. The Scotties (1-2, 0-1) will host East Allegheny in a non-section battle on Thursday.
South Allegheny 62 Valley 34
The game was close through the first quarter with South Allegheny leading just 15-9 but the Gladiators took of in the second, outscoring the Vikings 18-0, in a 62-34 triumph in Section 3-3A action. Ben Aftanas collected 15 points while B.J. Harvey had 10 for Valley (0-5, 0-2).
Ligonier Valley 79 East Allegheny 65
Matthew Marinchak rang up 35 points in leading Ligonier Valley to a 79-65 Section 3-3A victory at East Allegheny. The Rams were down 20-18 after one but outscored the Wildcats in both the second and third quarters. In addition to Marinchak, Haden Sierocky and Joey Kondisko scored 14 and 10 points a piece for Ligonier Valley (3-3, 1-1).
