Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Tuesday, April 23rd 2024:
Mount Lebanon 9 Hempfield Area 4
Hempfield Area lost its second straight game, and three of its last four, in a 9-4 defeat to Mount Lebanon in Section 2-6A play. With the Spartans trailing 6-4 through five innings, the Blue Devils plated a pair of runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to put the game away. The contest featured 25 hits and seven errors between the teams. Carson Shuglie had three hits, walked and scored twice for the Spartans (12-3, 8-3). Dylan Firmstone recorded two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in one. David Shields doubled three times and scored three runs for Mount Lebanon (12-3, 9-2) while teammate Weston Airey went 4-for-4 with four RBIs. The teams will meet again Thursday.
Norwin 5 Central Catholic 4
Nathan Silberman went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored helping Norwin to a 5-4 victory over Central Catholic in Section 2-6A. In addition to Silberman, Keegan Carr collected two hits and also drove in a run and scored once for the Knights (7-7, 5-5) while Jake Sincak crossed the plate twice. Matthew O'Neil worked three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory striking out six batters. CJ Proch had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs for the Vikings (7-8, 4-7).
Franklin Regional 6 Armstrong 2
Franklin Regional plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat Armstrong 6-2 in a Section 1-5A showdown. Max Bernadowski registered two hits and three RBIs while Cole Bringer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Panthers (9-4, 7-1). Dom Deriggi finished with three hits and scored a run. Blake Bertucci picked up the win in relief throwing 2 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run and striking out five. Rory Pschirer posted three hits and drove in a run for the River Hawks (5-7, 3-7).
Penn-Trafford 15 Penn Hills 1
Penn-Trafford erupted for six runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 15-1 victory over Penn Hills in a Section 1-5A match up. Jason Sabol tripled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Warriors (11-1, 7-1). Chuck Fontana added two hits and two RBIs while Ethan Septak hit a solo homer. Robbie Andrews pitched three innings allowing an unearned run to earn the victory. The Indians fall to 0-11, 0-10.
Belle Vernon 9 Albert Gallatin 4
Belle Vernon pounded out 10 hits in a Section 2-4A meeting with Albert Gallatin, sinking the Colonials 9-4. Leading the offensive barrage was Adam LaCarte who had two hits, including a double, three runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Cole Matusik contributed two hits, a double, and scored a pair of runs for the Leopards (10-2, 7-1). Alex Nash whiffed weight batters in six innings to earn the pitching victory. Albert Gallatin is now (2-10, 2-5).
Greater Latrobe 14 Uniontown 6
Greater Latrobe scored seven runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away from Uniontown 14-6 and secure a Section 2-4A victory. Eli Boring hit a three-run homer in the frame, finishing with two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for the Wildcats (12-1, 8-0). Luke Nipar-Smith finished 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. He was also the winning pitcher. Tate Musko homered and doubled for the Red Raiders (4-6, 3-4).
Kiski Area 11 Knoch 7
Kiski Area scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Knoch 11-7 in a Section 4-4A match up. Nate Witt had a massive day, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs for the Cavaliers (8-5, 5-3). John DeLuca added four hits and four runs scored while Jacob Smith crossed the plate three times. Austin Bachar picked up the win in relief going four innings. Cooper Allison finished 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs for the Knights (3-8, 2-6).
Burrell 12 Derry Area 7
Derry Area rallied to tie the game at 6-6 through five innings but Burrell scored twice in the sixth and four more times in the seventh to pull away from the Trojans, winning 12-7 in a Section 3-3A showdown. The Bucs led 6-2 through two innings but Derry Area scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull even before Burrell responded. Isaac Lacinski went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs for the Bucs (7-5, 6-4). Ryan Bates and Ryan Wass each added three hits. Max Doherty put up three hits and two RBIs for the Trojans (3-5, 3-4).
Valley 8 East Allegheny 1
Taylor Danko and Wesley Schrock each drove in a pair of runs in Valley's 8-1 victory against East Allegheny in a Section 3-3A game. Jacob Staraniec allowed one run in five innings to get the win on the mound for the Vikings (8-4, 5-3) who swept the two-game series. Ryan Rupert had a double for the Wildcats (7-4, 4-4).
Mount Pleasant 7 Yough 1
Ryan McKula drove in three runs to help lift Mount Pleasant to a 7-1 win over Yough in a Section 4-3A game. Luke Nicotera added a triple for the Vikings (9-4, 7-1). Zander Aird doubled for the Cougars (4-7, 4-3) who lost to Mount Pleasant 10-2 on Monday.
Waynesburg 7 Southmoreland 0
Waynesburg's Trenton Zupper and Austin Surber combined to throw a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Southmoreland in Section 4-3A. The Raiders improve to (10-0, 8-0) while the Scotties drop to (2-10, 2-8).
Riverview 11 Ligonier Valley 0
Ligonier Valley was held off the scoreboard for the second straight day, falling to Riverview 11-0 in a Section 3-2A contest. Duncan Foust had two hits, including a double, for the Rams (4-8, 2-6). Eli DeVita went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Raiders (8-3, 5-2).
Greensburg Central Catholic 6 Apollo-Ridge 0
Tyler Samide hit a home run for Greensburg Central Catholic in a 6-0 Section 3-2A triumph against Apollo-Ridge. Ethan Brody, Tyree Turner and Grant Miller combined on a two-hit shutout for the Centurions (6-2, 5-1). Brayden McCracken collected two hits for the Vikings (2-9, 2-7).
Serra Catholic 17 Jeannette 1
Serra Catholic brought home nine runs in the sixth inning to enact the 10-run-rule in a 17-1 victory over Jeannette in Section 3-2A play. Wyatt Schaeffer doubled for the Jayhawks (6-4, 4-3). Owen Dombroski knocked in four runs for first place Serra Catholic (11-0, 8-0).
