Jayhawks boys basketball stays perfect
The lone remaining undefeated team in WPIAL boys basketball is Jeannette, as the Jayhawks moved to 10-0 with a lopsided win last week. The host Jayhawks overwhelmed Frazier 73-33 on Friday in Class 2A Section 1 play. The Jayhawks used a balanced attack in the mercy-rule win, as Kymon’e Brown and Markus McGowan each tallied 16 points, while Xavier Odorisio-Farrow scored 13 and Lonnie Greene added a dozen points. In addition to their 10-0 overall mark, Jeannette improved to 4-0 in the section slate.
FR girls hoops moves atop standings
Keyed by a crucial win against Fox Chapel Area last Thursday, Franklin Regional girls basketball sits atop the section standings. The homestanding Panthers edged the Foxes 40-36, moving them to 4-0 in Class 5A Section 1. Madi DeRiggi shouldered the scoring burden, as she tallied a game-high 22 points, while Toryn Fulton posted six points. The Panthers hold a half-game edge over Shaler Area 3-0 in the standings.
Beitel, Zimmerman headline Ligonier Valley HOF class
A pair of longtime coaches headline the Ligonier Valley Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025 that was unveiled last week. Rams football coach Roger Beitel and softball coach Mark Zimmerman were tabbed in the class. The other inductees include: William “Bud” Boyd (Class of 1952 – Ligonier football); Dave Gregory (72 – Laurel Valley basketball); Rick McLeary (75 – Ligonier basketball); Linda Derk (83 – Ligonier Valley basketball/softball); Chelsea Brant (03 – Ligonier Valley swimming/volleyball); and Emily Daugherty (10 – Ligonier Valley soccer/basketball). Additionally, Bert Toy will be recognized as a contributor, Chuck Hart will be the legacy inductee, and the 1984 Ligonier Valley football squad will be the team representative. The induction ceremony will be held at the Barn in Ligonier on April 13.
PT hockey maintains top spot
Penn-Trafford hockey continued to roll through the competition, as the Warriors crushed Baldwin 6-1 in their return to action last Thursday. Robert Thatcher and Mario Ferraccio each notched two goals and an assist in in the triumph, while Ben Zierski contributed a goal and two helpers. Roman Catello, Cam Kiste, and Aiden Drotos also posted two-point efforts for PT, while Tyler Funk earned the victory in net, registering 13 saves. As a result, PT ascended to 11-2-0-1, and with 34 points, the Warriors reside in first place in the PIHL Class AA, four points ahead of Greater Latrobe.
SVC’s Harris earns win No. 400
Saint Vincent College men’s basketball coach D.P. Harris reached a significant milestone last week, as he notched his 400th career victory. The achievement came at home on Monday when the Bearcats bested Adrian College 68-57. Mike Iuzzolino contributed 18 points in the victory, while Osyon Jones added 17 points and 12 rebounds. With SVC also notching a 92-72 win against Waynesburg University on Saturday, Harris boasts a career mark of 401-162 in 21 seasons.
