Jayhawks, Golden Lions suffer first losses; Franklin Regional edges Gateway; Derry Area posts shutout win

Leechburg 35 Jeannette 13 (LEECH: 5-0; JEAN: 4-1) - WATCH BROADCAST

Leechburg’s Jayden Floyd proved unstoppable, as Jeannette fell at home to the Blue Devils 35-13. Floyd notched 209 yards rushing and five scores, and he also snagged an interception on defense. Thus, the Blue Devils moved to 2-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while the Jayhawks dropped to 1-1. Kymon’e Brown amassed 109 yards rushing and a score for Jeannette, while passing for 72 yards. Xavier Odoriso-Farrow added a touchdown reception for the Jayhawks.

Ambridge Area 27 Greensburg Salem 8 (AMB: 3-1; GS: 4-1) - WATCH BROADCAST

Ambridge Area scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to outlast host Greensburg Salem 27-8 in a nonconference matchup. The Golden Lions suffered their first loss, dropping to 4-1. Zavion Lewis notched a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Bridgers. In the setback, Peyton Chismar went 7-of-14 passing for 58 yards and a TD, a 23-yard connection with Cooper Dann in the first quarter. The Golden Lions also notched a safety in the fourth quarter when an Ambridge snap went through the end zone.

Derry Area 21 Indiana Area 0 (DA: 3-2; IND: 1-4) - WATCH BROADCAST

Led by Damauri Robinson and a stifling defense, Derry Area blanked Indiana Area 21-0 in a nonconference affair. The host Trojans received a pair of TD runs from Robinson, while Justin Papuga added another score on the ground for Derry Area.

North Allegheny 36 Norwin 14 (NA: 5-0; NOR: 2-3) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Despite a strong effort in the first half for Norwin and Tristyn Tavares, the Knights fell 36-14 at North Allegheny. Tavares rushed for 126 yards and a pair of scores, but left with injury before halftime. Brady Brinkley amassed 156 yards through the air for host NA. Thus, the Knights dropped to 0-2 in Class 6A, while the Tigers moved to 2-0.

Franklin Regional 36 Gateway 34 (FR: 4-1; GATE: 2-3) - LISTEN BROADCAST

A monster performance by Kyle Dupill propelled Franklin Regional to a 36-34 victory at Gateway in the Class 5A Big East Conference. Dupill rushed 36 times for 226 yards, scoring a pair of touchdowns for the Panthers. Quarterback Chase Lemke added 158 yards passing and a pair of scores for FR, while Joey Bayne produced two field goals. Gators QB Elsidro Bryant threw for 295 yards, with three TDs and two interceptions, and he rushed for 92 yards and a score.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic 42 Hempfield Area 0 (PCC: 3-2; HEMP: 1-4)

Hempfield Area was stifled offensively, and the Spartans had no answer for Xxavier Thomas, who helped Pittsburgh Central Catholic cruise to a 42-0 win. With the home defeat, the Spartans dipped to 0-2 in Class 6A, while the Vikings improved to 2-0 in the conference. Thomas, a Penn State commit, hauled in two touchdown passes, produced an 83-yard punt return score, and added an interception. Aidan Stinebiser rushed for 54 yards for the Spartans, while Jack Kopas caught six passes for 68 yards. Hempfield QB Dom Detruf passed for 127 yards but threw three interceptions.

Penn-Trafford 33 Kiski Area 7 (PT: 3-2; KA: 1-4)

Led by Tasso Whipple’s big performance on the ground and a key special teams play, Penn-Trafford claimed a 33-7 win at Kiski Area. As a result, the Warriors evened their mark at 1-1 in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while the Cavaliers dipped to 0-2. Whipple rushed 14 times for 185 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Cheplick added a 98-yard kickoff return score for the Warriors. Derek Carr added 101 yards on the ground. Kiski Area’s lone score came on a TD pass from Carson Heinle to Aven Shirley to briefly tie the game at 7-7 early in the third quarter. The Warriors scored 26 unanswered points in response, though.

Greater Latrobe 14 Armstrong 0 (GL: 4-1; ARM: 2-3)

A pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns proved the difference in Greater Latrobe’s 14-0 home victory against Armstrong. With the W, the Wildcats moved to 1-1 in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while the River Hawks fell to 0-1 in the conference. John Wetzel and Brady Prohovic each scored 34-yard rushing touchdowns in the final stanza for the Wildcats. Despite missing the second half with injury, Alex Tatsch rushed for 117 yards for GL, while Prohovic notched 58 yards on the ground and Wetzel added 56 rushing yards.

South Fayette 27 Belle Vernon Area 14 (SF: 5-0; BVA 1-2)

Held without any points offensively until the final minute of the game, Belle Vernon Area suffered a 27-14 loss at home to South Fayette in a nonconference clash. Kole Doppelheuer produced an 89-yard interception return score for BVA, while he also caught a 20-yard pass from Curty Wade late in the fourth. The Lions were led by QB Drew Welhorsky, who threw for 175 yards and two TDs, and rushed for 126 yards and another score.

Southmoreland 32 Ringgold 15 (SM: 4-1; RING: 1-4)

Anthony Smith continued his impressive freshman campaign, as he propelled Southmoreland to a 32-15 win on the road against Ringgold. Smith produced 172 yards and two touchdowns through the air for the Scotties.

Laurel Highlands 21 Mount Pleasant Area 20 (LH: 3-1; MP: 2-3)

Playing in a one-point game for the third time already this season, Mount Pleasant Area suffered a heartbreaking 21-20 loss in overtime against Laurel Highlands. The host Vikings failed on their two-point conversion, a run by Stephen Predajna, in the extra period. Prior to that, Predajna scored a pair of touchdowns – a fumble recovery on a botched snap, and a 2-yard run in overtime. The other Vikings score came on a 27-yard connection from Cole Chatfield to Jonah Townsend. Brody Hutter paced the Mount Pleasant rushing game with 11 carries for 64 yards.

Blackhawk 57 Yough 6 (BHWK: 3-2; YOU: 2-3)

Yough was overmatched in a 57-6 loss at Blackhawk in the nonconference showdown of the Cougars. While Blackhawk racked up 528 yards, Yough was limited to 180 yards of offense. In the setback, Yough QB Raidon Kuroda amassed 139 yards through the air, including a touchdown pass.

Freeport Area 42 Burrell 0 (FRP: 3-2; BUR: 0-5)

Burrell had no answer for Freeport Area Drew Ross, as the Buccaneers fell 42-0 on the road to the Yellowjackets. Consequently, the Bucs drop to 0-1 in the Class 3A Allegheny 7 Conference, while Freeport moved to 1-1. Ross, the Yellowjackets QB, rushed for 78 yards and three scores, while he threw for 156 yards and another touchdown. Trey Coury was a bright spot for Burrell, as he compiled 21 carries for 60 yards.

Quaker Valley 34 Valley 14 (QV: 1-3; VAL: 0-5)

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 28 Ligonier Valley 7 (OLSH: 2-2; LV: 2-3)

Ligonier Valley failed to slow down Vann Kavals, who topped 100 yards each on the ground and through the air in leading Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to a 28-7 victory at Moon Area High School. Consequently, the Rams fell to 1-1 in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, while the Chargers improved to 1-1. Kavals hit on 13-of-19 passes for 132 yards and three TDs, while he rushed for 115 yards on a dozen carries. Ligonier Valley’s score came on a 65-yard punt return TD by John Jablunovsky in the opening quarter.

Greensburg Central Catholic 34 Brentwood 12 (GCC: 2-2; BRENT: 2-3)

Samir Crosby produced three TD passes in leading Greensburg Central Catholic to a 34-12 victory at home against Brentwood. As a result, the Centurions improved to 1-1 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while the Spartans dipped to 1-1.
