Hempfield Area 3 Seneca Valley 2 LISTEN BROADCAST
Maggie Howard scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as the Spartans scored three unanswered runs to edge Seneca Valley 3-2. The host Spartans trailed 2-0, but Allie Cervola provided an RBI single in the fourth, and Emily Griffith singled and scored on a fielders’ choice in the fifth to deadlock the score. Howard doubled to start the rally in the seventh, and advanced to third on another wild pitch, setting the stage for the walk-off triumph. Howard also added a walk and a stolen base, while Lauren Howard singled, drew a free pass, and stole a base. Riley Miller notched the W in the circle, as she went the distance, giving up four hits and compiling 10 strikeouts. Conversely, Lexie Hames was the tough-luck loser, as she also permitted just four hits, while fanning a dozen. Bella Gross boosted the Raiders offensively, as she had a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the fourth, when SV scored both of its runs. With the victory, Hempfield Area improved to 5-1 in Class 6A Section 1, while Seneca Valley fell to 5-1.
Penn-Trafford 10 Kiski Area 8 WATCH BROADCAST
Penn-Trafford erased an early five-run deficit to defeat Kiski Area 10-8 in a Section 2-5A battle. The Cavaliers led 7-2 after scoring six times in the top of the second inning but the Warriors plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4. P-T then tallied five runs in the fifth inning started by a Lauren Sepe pinch hit homer. Cameron Ponko cracked an RBI double to tie the game and a Kiski Area error allowed two more runs to score to put the Warriors in front 9-7. They wouldn't relinquish the lead. Ponko finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs for Penn-Trafford (2-6, 1-2). She also earned the win in relief allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Kylie Anthony collected three hits and scored twice for P-T. Makenzie Favero went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Cavaliers (4-2, 1-2). Mackenzie Rainey and Alyssa Perona each added three hits and Hannah Simpson hit a home run.
Norwin 10 North Allegheny 7
Down 7-0 after four innings, Norwin made an incredible comeback to defeat North Allegheny 10-7 in a Section 1-6A clash in Wexford. The Knights started the rally by plating three runs in the fifth inning then went on to score five times in the sixth to secure an 8-7 lead. Norwin tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to earn the victory. Josey Michalski had an outstanding performance at the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs. Madie Kessler collected two hits and walked twice while Emma Novotnak drove in two runs with a double in the Knights big fifth inning. Alyssa McCormick battled through to pick up the win inside the circle for Norwin (7-2, 5-1). Caitlin Logan hit a grand slam and Meghan McDonough had three hits and scored twice for the Tigers (8-3, 5-2).
Greater Latrobe 8 Franklin Regional 3
Hayden Kraynick went off, belting two home runs, a double and five RBIs to lead Greater Latrobe to an 8-3 triumph over Franklin Regional in Section 2-5A. Piper Zufall added a two-run homer for the Wildcats (7-1, 2-1) and Kayla Williams was the winning pitcher. Lexi Patberg cracked a two-run homer for the Panthers (4-3, 2-1).
Uniontown 5 Greensburg Salem 2
Uniontown jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back in a 5-2 win at Greensburg Salem in Section 2-4A play. Gionnah Ruffner smacked a solo home run for the Golden Lions (4-5, 1-3). Kaidence Thomas took the loss despite striking out 10 batters. Only three of the five runs she allowed were earned. Emmaleigh Noah had a pair of triples for the Red Raiders (3-4, 3-1).
Freeport 3 Burrell 2
Sydney Selker came through with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Freeport past Burrell 3-2 in a Section 1-3A victory. Not only did Selker provide the game-winning hit, she also struck out 12 batters and allowed just two hits to earn the win for the Yellowjackets (3-4, 1-2). Katie Armstrong and Braelyn Jones drove in runs for the Buccaneers (4-3, 2-1). Armstrong was the hard luck loser as she fanned 14 Freeport batters in the contest.
Valley 9 Shady Side Academy 3
Morgan Dunkel whiffed seven Shady Side Academy hitters in the Vikings 9-3 Section 1-3A win.
Mount Pleasant 10 Derry Area 0
Sophia Smithnosky tossed a complete game one-hit shutout as Mount Pleasant earned a 10-0 victory against visiting Derry Area in a Section 3-3A contest. The Vikings jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and added a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth frames. Smithnosky, who finished with 10 strikeouts, helped herself at the plate as she cracked two doubles and drove in a run. Ally Jones added two hits for Mount Pleasant (6-4, 2-1) while Ella Alakson had a double and two RBIs. Sophia Doherty had the lone hit for the Trojans (1-5, 0-3).
Ligonier Valley 11 South Allegheny 5
Ruby Wallace homered and drove in two runs to help push Ligonier Valley past South Allegheny 11-5 in a Section 3-3A tilt. In addition to Wallace, Payton LaVale doubled and drove in three runs for the Rams (4-1, 2-1). Cheyenne Piper fanned eight to secure the victory. Gina Connors brought in two runs for the Gladiators (4-5, 1-2).
Southmoreland 15 Yough 10
In a wild game that featured a combined 25 runs, 21 hits and nine errors Southmoreland came out on top beating Yough 15-10 in a Section 3-3A match up. 17 runs came across the plate in the first two innings alone as the Scotties led 9-8 after two. Southmoreland added three more runs in the fourth, and two in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Amarah McCutcheon had a monster game finishing 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and five runs scored for the Scotties (5-1, 3-0). Riley Puckey also blasted two home runs and finished with 4 RBIs while Makayla Etling contributed three hits and scored three times. Madi Horvat led the Cougars (3-2, 1-2) as she went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Her teammate Sidney Bergman added three hits.
Greensburg Central Catholic 8 Brentwood 2
Greensburg Central Catholic was led by Grace Kindel who belted a home run, a double and drove in three runs as the Centurions handled Brentwood 8-2 in a Section 2-2A match up. In addition to Kindel, Emma Henry and Erica Rodriguez each had three hits with Henry adding a triple and two runs scored for GCC (6-0, 3-0). She also struck out 10 batters in five innings of work to pick up the victory in the circle. Mia March provided a triple and knocked in a pair of runs for the winless Spartans (0-4, 0-3).
Leechburg 7 Jeannette 2
Jeannette suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 7-2 decision to Leechburg in Section 3-1A action. Anna Cibik collected two doubles and two RBIs for the Blue Devils (3-5, 3-1) while Franke Crosby hit a double for the Jayhawks (4-1, 3-1).
