Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Monday, April 15th 2024:
Hempfield Area 6 Canon-McMillan 3
Hempfield Area was in danger of losing its first game of the season before scoring four runs in the sixth inning to secure a 6-3 victory in Section 2-6A. The Big Macs scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead but in the bottom of the frame the Spartans scored on an error then got a two-run double from Gage Beeman and an RBI single from Ethan Minerva to go ahead 6-3 and secure the victory. Adam Hess earned the win in relief as he threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Hempfield Area (11-0, 7-0). The Big Macs fall to (3-6, 3-4).
Mount Lebanon 4 Norwin 1
Nate Silberman went 2-for-3 and drove in the only Norwin run in a 4-1 loss to visiting Mount Lebanon in Section 2-6A play. Keegan Carr singled, walked and scored the only tally for the Knights (5-5, 3-3). Jake Tinnemeyer blasted a two run homer for the Blue Devils (8-3, 5-2).
Franklin Regional 9 Fox Chapel 6
Max Bernadowski had two hits and reached base four times leading Franklin Regional to a 9-6 victory at Fox Chapel in a Section 1-5A contest. The Panthers scored all nine runs in the first three innings then held off the Foxes. Darren DeRiggi added two hits and drove in a run for the Panthers (7-3, 5-0). Bernadowski was also the winning pitcher as he allowed three runs in four innings while striking out 10. N.J. Ramchandran pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save. Antonio LeDonne registered two hits and three RBIs for the Foxes (6-3, 5-2).
Greater Latrobe 8 Albert Gallatin 1
Greater Latrobe scored four times in the first inning and never looked back, securing an 8-1 Section 2-4A victory at Albert Gallatin. Mason Leonard had three hits, drove in a run and scored once for the Wildcats (7-1, 4-0). Riley Smith collected two hits and two RBIs and Luke Nipar-Smith knocked in a pair of runs. Riley Smith was the winning pitcher as he allowed just one run on four hits in six innings striking out five batters. Cole Smith drove in the only run for the Colonials (2-6, 2-1).
Belle Vernon 2 Laurel Highlands 1
Lucas Judy fired a complete game one-hitter with 14 strikeouts plus went 3-for-3 at the plate to help Belle Vernon edge Laurel Highlands 2-1 in a Section 2-4A contest. The game-winning run came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Austin Hoffman drew a bases loaded walk to give the Leopards the lead they wouldn't relinquish. Jake Gedekoh added a single and two walks for Belle Vernon (6-1, 3-0). Parker Hoff supplied the only hit for the Mustangs (0-7, 0-4).
Highlands 8 Kiski Area 5
Highlands broke a 5-5 tie by scoring three runs in the sixth inning in an 8-5 victory over Kiski Area in a Section 4-4A tilt. Designated hitter John DeLuca went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Cavaliers (5-4, 2-3) while Jake Smith added a RBI double. Carson McGraw posted three hits, including a double, for the Golden Rams (2-7, 1-3).
Deer Lakes 9 Derry Area 8
Playing in its first game in over two weeks, Derry Area quickly trailed 7-0 through two innings and couldn't complete the comeback in a 9-8 loss to Deer Lakes in Section 3-3A. The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs down 9-7 in the seventh inning but could only bring home one run falling just short. Roman Fridley collected two hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored a run for the Trojans (2-2, 2-1). John Wasnick added two hits including a solo home run while Collin Barkley also finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Ryan Cochran hit a pair of home runs for the Lancers (3-5, 1-5).
Freeport 2 Valley 1
Michael Hanz delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to lift Freeport to a 2-1 victory against Valley in Section 3-3A. Dom Dunkel drove in the only run for the Vikings (5-3, 3-2) while Marr Corfield picked up the win on the mound for the Yellowjackets (2-5, 2-4).
Mount Pleasant 5 Brownsville 2
Luke Nicotera's two-run homer helped power Mount Pleasant to a 5-2 Section 4-3A triumph against Brownsville. Connor Drzal added a double and RBI for the Vikings (5-4, 3-1). Jacob Kitz was the winning pitcher, fanning 10 batters. Jonathan Vasbinder doubled and singled for the Falcons (0-6, 0-6).
Greensburg Salem 5 McGuffey 4
After McGuffey plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game, Greensburg Salem's Keegan Young delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame to lift the Golden Lions to a 5-4 win over the Highlanders in Section 4-3A. Young finished with two RBIs while Tyler Davis also drove in two runs for Greensburg Salem (2-3, 2-2). Tyler Martin got the final two outs of the top of the seventh inning to earn the victory. Sam Stout finished with a hit and two walks for McGuffey (2-3, 2-2).
Greensburg Central Catholic 3 Brentwood 1
Ethan Brody pitched an eight-inning complete game as Greensburg Central Catholic topped Brentwood 3-1 in a Section 3-2A battle. Grant Miller provided the go-ahead hit in the top of the eighth inning for the Centurions (4-1, 3-0). Tyler Samide added three hits including the game-tying run-scoring single in the seventh inning. The Spartans drop to (1-5, 0-5).
Jeannette 11 Apollo-Ridge 1
Jeannette scored five runs in the sixth inning to enact the 10-run rule in an 11-1 win against visiting Apollo-Ridge in a Section 3-2A clash. The Jayhawks pounded out 10 hits and were led by Nick Rattigan who doubled and knocked in three runs. Noah Rattigan had two hits and scored three runs while Jayden Kennedy also contributed two hits. Brayden Luttner struck out nine batters in six innings yielding just one hit for Jeannette (5-1, 3-0). The Vikings are now (0-7, 0-6).
Serra Catholic 11 Ligonier Valley 0
Collin Holmes doubled and knocked in two runs helping Serra Catholic earn an 11-0 victory over Ligonier Valley. Jake Holmes added three hits for the Eagles (8-0, 5-0). Gavin Moore and Tyler Smith each supplied a hit for the Rams (3-4, 2-3).
Penn-Trafford 3 Butler 2
Brody Hoffman came up with the walk-off single in the ninth inning as Penn-Trafford edged Butler 3-2 in non-section action. Chuck Fontana finished with two hits and drove in a run for the Warriors (8-1, 5-1). Hunter Brown tossed three scoreless innings of relief to collect the win. Liam McElroy doubled in a run for the Golden Tornado (3-7, 1-5).
