Seton Hill's historic season came to an end on Saturday in the Division II National Softball Championships as the Griffins fell to California State Dominquez Hills 9-6 at the Assembly Athletic Complex in Denver, Colorado.
The Griffins lost the first game of the eight-team national tournament 4-0 to Auburn Montgomery on Thursday but responded with an 8-1 victory over Adelphi on Friday.
In the loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Seton Hill trailed 3-1 early but sent 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and took a 6-3 lead over the Toros. The big hit came off the bat of Morgan Toal who drilled a two-run double down the left field line. Jenna Osikowicz and Brooklyn Fukushima also singled home runs in the frame.
Cal State Dominguez Hills would cut the lead to 6-4 with a tally in the fifth and then explode for five runs on five hits in the sixth to leap in front 9-6. Chenoa Au provided the key hit, lacing a three-run double in the frame.
The Griffins put runners at second and third with two outs in the seventh inning but Morgan Ryan struck out for the final out of the contest.
"I couldn't be more prouder of the team as a collective whole," Seton Hill coach Jess Strong said. "I know as a team, sometimes when we get behind, we try to change and do something more but I didn't see that today."
Toal and Fukushima each finished with two hits and two RBIs for SHU. Osikowicz also had a pair of hits plus scored twice while McClendon finished with two hits and walked three times.
Dellett, pitching in relief of Ryan, was saddled with the loss. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Seton Hill finishes the season with a 42-12 record and its first NCAA Atlantic Region championship in program history.
"I truly can't thank the (seniors) enough," Strong added. "I'm so proud of what they put into this program four years ago that has led to this moment. I couldn't be a happier coach. Of course, we wish we could still be dancing but sometimes you fall short. Only one team gets to go out a winner, it just wasn't us today."
