Union's Lucas Stanley nailed a three-pointer with 1:35 left then connected on a key free throw to lift the Scotties to a 44-42 upset of top-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic in a WPIAL 2A quarterfinal game at Shaler.

Belle Vernon 55 Elizabeth Forward 51 (4A)
Top-seeded Belle Vernon fought off an Elizabeth Forward comeback in the fourth quarter, downing the eighth-seeded Warriors 55-51 in a WPIAL 4A quarterfinal game. The Leopards led 34-29 at halftime and 49-41 after three. Elizabeth Forward outscored Belle Vernon 10-6 in the final quarter but couldn't tie the contest. Zion Moore put in 17 points for the Leopards (19-4) with Tommy Davis and Trevor Kovatch adding 14 and 12 points respectively. James Gile scored 15 points to lead the Warriors (18-6). Belle Vernon advances to play No. 4 Avonworth on Saturday in the semifinals at Peters Township starting at 3 p.m.
WPIAL boys basketball first round game recaps from Tuesday, February 18th 2025:
Greater Latrobe 59 Kiski Area 51 (5A) LISTEN BROADCAST
Keyed by 26 points and five 3-pointers by Max Butler, Greater Latrobe claimed a 59-51 victory at Kiski Area in the WPIAL Class 5A first round. Butler tallied 18 points in the first half, staking GL to a 31-18 edge at the intermission. Although the Cavaliers trimmed their deficit to five points in the second half courtesy of a scoring flurry by Jacob Musselman, who finished with 22 points, the No. 8 Cavaliers could not pull even. The ninth-seeded Wildcats also received 13 points from Ian DeCerb, while Andy Tatsch contributed 10 points. Kiski Area, which captured its first section title in a dozen years, ends the campaign at 15-7. Conversely, the Wildcats (19-4) move on to the quarterfinals to meet top-seeded Montour at Ringgold on Friday starting at 8 p.m.
Penn-Trafford 60 Baldwin 45 (5A)
Penn-Trafford stunned second-seeded Baldwin 60-45 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A field. The No. 15 Warriors were led by Zach Feldman, who contributed a game-high 20 points, while Brayden Stone notched 16 points and Evan Gross added 10 points for PT. The Warriors outpaced the Highlanders 19-6 in the decisive third quarter. Baldwin (21-2), which captured its first section title since 1986, was paced by Caden Cherico’s 13 points. The Warriors (14-9) progress to the quarterfinals on Friday, when they’ll battle No. 10 Mars Area at Fox Chapel with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Montour 70 Franklin Regional 42 (5A)
Franklin Regional could not contain top-seeded Montour, as the homestanding Spartans cruised to a 70-42 win in WPIAL Class 5A first round play. The No. 16 Panthers fell into a 20-8 deficit after the first quarter and could not rally, despite 14 points from Connor Crossey and a dozen courtesy of Jonah Johnston. Ama Tening Sow posted 24 points for the Spartans (22-1), who will face Greater Latrobe in the quarterfinals on Friday. Conversely, Franklin Regional concludes its season at 12-12.
Southmoreland 58 Carlynton 50 (3A) WATCH BROADCAST
Powered by Noah Felentzer's outstanding performance, No. 6 Southmoreland secured its first WPIAL playoff win in eight years taking down No. 11 Carlynton 58-50 in a WPIAL 3A first round match up. Although the Cougars kept it close, the Scotties held the lead for the majority of the game, ending the contest on a 17-10 run. Felentzer poured in a game-high 31 points for Southmoreland (18-5) while Devonte Dean scored 19 points for Carlynton (9-13). The Scotties will meet third-seeded Mohawk in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. at North Catholic.
Keystone Oaks 72 Ligonier Valley 57 (3A)
Keystone Oaks built up a 40-20 halftime lead and went on to defeat Ligonier Valley 72-57 in the first round of the WPIAL 3A playoffs. Parker Hollick struck for 22 points in a losing effort for the Rams (13-9) while Michael Vargulish-Graver and Michael Wisniewski added 18 and 11 points respectively. Erond Jakupi's 25 points were a game-high for the Eagles (17-6) who advance to play No. 4 Bishop Canevin on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Mount Lebanon 61 Norwin 34 (6A)
No. 11 Norwin was outscored in every quarter by No. 6 Mount Lebanon, as the Knights saw their season come to an end at Mount Lebanon losing 61-34 in a WPIAL 6A first round game. Mario Csukas amassed a team-high 14 points for Norwin (10-12). Sam Deibert collected 24 points for the Blue Devils (16-7) who will take on third-seeded Imani Christian on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Greensburg Central Catholic 67 Laurel 42 (2A) WATCH BROADCAST
Top-seed Greensburg Central Catholic held No. 16 Laurel without a field goal until the second quarter, cruising to a 67-42 WPIAL Class 2A first round victory. A trio of Centurions reached double figures with Brady O'Rourke's 15 points leading the way. A.J. Tarpley came in with 14 points and Liam Gallagher scored 12. Mason Ernst notched 13 points for the Spartans (12-12). Greensburg Central Catholic (21-2) will play No. 8 Union in the WPIAL quarterfinals on Thursday.
Jeannette 91 Brentwood 42 (2A) LISTEN BROADCAST
With five players scoring in double figures, Jeannette dominated Brentwood 91-42 in the WPIAL Class 2A first round. Holding a six-point edge after the first quarter, the homestanding Jayhawks outscored the Spartans 21-7 in the second quarter, and 26-11 in the third frame. Kymon’e Brown tallied a team-leading 20 points for third seed Jeannette, while Markus McGowan scored 18, Xavier Odorisio-Farrow contributed 17 points, Stone Markam produced 15 points, and Jayce Powell added 11 points. Forrest Betz amassed 20 points in the loss for the No. 19 Spartans (10-13), while Colton Rosing notched 16 points. Jeannette (20-2) continues into the quarterfinals on Thursday against No. 6 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
