Westmoreland County high school boys wrestling match recaps from Wednesday, January 15th 2025:
Franklin Regional 43 Penn-Trafford 22 WATCH BROADCAST
Penn-Trafford took an early 10-6 lead but Franklin Regional reeled off six straight wins to secure a 43-22 victory in Section 9-3A. Nico Sarnic (139), and Henry Patts (189) each won by fall for the Panthers (12-0, 3-0). Mike Ruane (127), Chase Smith (133) and Max Firestine (145) all secured technical fall victories for FR. Logan Matrisch (172) and Ben Grabowski (215) both earned pins for the Warriors (4-5, 1-2) with Dylan Barrett (114) and Luke DeSantis (121) getting technical falls. Penn-Trafford was without top wrestler Tasso Whipple who was disqualified during the WCCA tournament on Saturday.
Kiski Area 46 Armstrong 26
Kiski Area picked up six pins in its 46-26 triumph over Armstrong in a Section 5-3A match. Recording falls were Travis Shearer (160), Mark Gray (189), Cooper Roscosky (215), Gavin Murphy (121), John Deluca (127) and Jackson Pollick (133). Mario Hutcherson (172) and Paxton Newell (107) each won by technical fall for the Cavaliers (11-4, 3-0). The Riverhawks are now (6-4, 1-2).
Greater Latrobe 47 Hempfield Area 25
Greater Latrobe collected four, first-period pins in a 47-25 victory over Hempfield Area in a Section 8-3A contest. Luke Willochell (139) Clayton Burket (152), Bradan Bronson (172) and Marco Scarton (285) registered the falls while Leo Joseph earned a technical fall at 121 pounds for the Wildcats (5-3, 2-0). Dominick Woods (133), Leroy Corey (160) and JacobBeck (189) picked up falls for the Spartans (2-6, 0-2).
Belle Vernon 68 Laurel Highlands 6
Vander Raczkowski (132), Kole Doppelheuer (152), Eric Adamec (182) and Elijah Brown (220) all collected falls while Deyson Soto (138) won by technical fall in Belle Vernon's 68-6 victory over visiting Laurel Highlands in Section 7-3A. The Leopards are now (3-1, 3-1) while the Mustangs dip to (1-2, 0-1).
Greensburg Salem 34 Mount Pleasant 33
Andrew Pohland, Noah Sommerville, Keegan Young and Ethan Miller each recorded victories as Greensburg Salem edged Mount Pleasant 34-33 in Section 8-2A action. Longtime head coach Randy Parsley was honored prior to the match for his 40 years of coaching at Greensburg Salem. The Golden Lions improve to (6-3, 1-1) while the Vikings are now (1-10, 0-2).
Southmoreland 64 South Allegheny 12
Southmoreland captured its first section title since 1998, cruising to a 64-12 triumph over visiting South Allegheny in Section 7-2A. The Scotties improve to (7-6, 4-0) while the Gladiators are (2-7, 0-3).
Derry Area 42 Ligonier Valley 15
Anthony Mucci (133), Mason Horwat (152), Ewan Olson (172) and Brady Brown (189) all posted technical falls in leading Derry Area to a 42-15 Section 8-2A win at Ligonier Valley. Giovanni Beatrice earned a first period pin at 133 pounds and Brett Klim won by major decision at 139 for the Trojans (14-2, 2-0). Lucas Krieger (215) recorded a third period pin while Aiden Mulheren won by decision at 145 for the Rams (3-12, 1-1)
South Park 59 Yough 14
Yough dropped a 59-14 Section 7-2A match to South Park. Chad Brown (114) had a pin, Bryce Harvey (172) earned a technical fall and Raidon Kuroda (285) won by decision for the Cougars (2-10, 0-3). The Eagles improve to (10-2, 3-1).
Burrell 70 Riverview 0
Burrell improved its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Section 9-2A with a 70-0 win against Riverview at home.
Valley 39 Fox Chapel 30 (Girls)
Isabella Martinez (106), Emilia Hutcherson (118), Paula Sanchez (124), Ariona Lineburg (136), Lily Kranak (148) and Arianna Bernard (190) won by fall to lead Valley to a 39-30 win over Fox Chapel.
