WPIAL releases team wrestling brackets Thursday

Franklin Regional, Burrell and Derry among host sites for first round and quarterfinals

The WPIAL released its team wrestling brackets on Thursday, and several Westmoreland County teams earned premium seeds. In Class 3A, Franklin Regional garnered the No. 2 seed, while defending champion Burrell and Derry Area were seeded No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Class 2A field.

The Panthers captured the Section 9 title with a mark of 4-0, and FR has been unblemished in 13 matches. As a result, FR will host the winner of Moon Area and Peters Township on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Kiski Area (13-4, 4-0), which claimed the Section 5 title, was seeded No. 8 and will battle Greater Latrobe, the No. 9 seed, as Connellsville Area High School on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats (5-4, 2-1) came in second in Section 8. Moreover, Norwin received the fifth seed after the Knights (12-1, 3-1) finished as runners-up behind the Panthers in Section 9. As a result, Norwin will battle No. 12 Canon-McMillan at Bethel Park High School on Wednesday at 6 p.m. A pair of county teams also earned preliminary-round matchups, as Belle Vernon Area (3-2, 2-2) will battle Butler Area, while Penn-Trafford (7-8, 2-2) will square off against North Hills, with both matches occurring at North Hills High School on Monday.

In Class 2A, the Buccaneers claimed the Section 9 title with a mark of 4-0, and Burrell is 10-1 overall on the season. As a result, the Bucs will host the winner of Greensburg Salem at Knoch on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Golden Lions will be on their home mat against the Knights on Monday at 7:15 in the preliminary round. Additionally, the Trojans (15-2, 3-0) took first place in Section 8, and as a result, DA will host the winner of Bentworth and Avella on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Southmoreland (7-6, 4-0), which topped the standings in Section 7, received the No. 8 seed and will battle ninth-seeded Jefferson-Morgan at Burrell on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The Class 3A and 2A semifinals and championships will both be held on Feb. 1 at Peters Township’s AHN Arena.
