Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Monday, April 22nd 2024:
Norwin 10 Hempfield Area 8
Despite committing six errors, Norwin was able to outlast Hempfield Area 10-8 in a Section 2-6A game. The Knights scored six runs in the second inning before the Spartans plated a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to 6-4. Norwin, however, scored four more times in the top of the seventh then held off a Hempfield Area rally to secure the win. Keegan Carr collected three hits, three RBIs and scored twice for the Knights (9-7, 7-5). Carson Shuglie and Parker Donsen each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Spartans (12-5, 8-5). Donsen also scored twice. With the win, Norwin is now a half-game behind Hempfield Area for second place.
Plum 7 Franklin Regional 4
Franklin Regional dropped its second consecutive game, falling to Plum 7-4 in a Section 1-5A match up. Luke Williams homered and doubled for the Panthers, scoring three runs. Brady Yarabinetz doubled and walked for Franklin Regional (9-6, 7-2). Sean Franzi registered two hits, with a double, and two RBIs for the Mustangs (10-5, 7-2).
Penn-Trafford 16 Gateway 1
Penn-Trafford tallied eight runs in the second inning and eight more in the fourth in a lopsided 16-1 victory against visiting Gateway in Section 1-5A. Brody Hoffman tripled, doubled, plus drove in three runs and scored three times for the Warriors (13-1, 8-1). Chuck Fontana also had two hits and scored twice while Jason Sabol knocked in a pair of runs. Dom Delio allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out five in four innings for the win. The Gators fall to (2-12, 1-7).
North Catholic 13 Kiski Area 2
It was tied 2-2 after the first inning but North Catholic plated four runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth for a 13-2 victory at Kiski Area in a Section 4-4A contest. John Deluca collected two hits and Nate Witt finished with two RBIs for the Cavaliers (10-6, 5-4). Tommy Koroly homered twice and finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored for the Trojans (8-4, 8-1).
Belle Vernon 4 Greater Latrobe 3 WATCH BROADCAST
An error in the top of the 12th inning proved to be the difference as Belle Vernon outlasted Greater Latrobe 4-3 in an important battle atop Section 2-4A. With runners on first and second, Wildcats catcher Louie Amatucci sailed a pickoff throw to first base into right field which allowed Adam LaCarte to score the go-ahead run from second. Greater Latrobe put two runners on base in the bottom of the 12th but a flyout ended the game. LaCarte and Jake Gedekoh each had two hits with LaCarte hitting a solo homer in the fourth inning for the Leopards (12-3, 8-1). Parker Lind struck out a whopping 15 batters in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the victory. Mason Leonard and Cooper Basciano singled and scored for the Wildcats (13-2, 8-1).
Yough 6 McGuffey 4
Landon O'Donnell's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie as the Cougars topped McGuffey in Section 4-3A. Aidan Shaffer, the winning pitcher, added a double and two RBIs for Yough (6-8, 5-4). Ryan Keith recorded three hits and drove in three for the Highlanders (5-6, 5-4).
Mount Pleasant 4 Waynesburg 1
Jacob Kitz allowed a run in seven innings to guide Mount Pleasant to a 4-1, Section 4-3A victory over Waynesburg. Brady Poole helped supply the offense as he knocked in a pair of runs for the Vikings (10-4, 8-1). Austin Surber had two hits, including a double, for the Raiders (10-1, 8-1). Both teams are now tied for first place in the section.
Burrell 4 Deer Lakes 2
Burrell scored three runs in the first inning and added one more in the fourth to secure a 4-2 win over Deer Lakes in Section 3-3A play. A.J. McLafferty finished with two hits, drove in a run and scored once for the Bucs (8-6, 7-4). Isaac Lacinski tripled in a run. Stephen Hasson pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Brayden Mell picked up the save. Ryan Cochran ended 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lancers (5-9, 3-6).
Riverview 8 Jeannette 2
Rece Stempfer put up two hits and three RBIs as Riverview downed Jeannette 8-2 in a Section 3-2A showdown. Noah Rattigan provided two hits and an RBI for the Jayhawks (6-6, 4-5). The Raiders improve to (10-3, 6-2).
Serra Catholic 3 Greensburg Central Catholic 1
Zach Black had three hits, including a triple and double, to power Serra Catholic past Greensburg Central Catholic 3-1 in a battle for first place in Section 3-2A. Grant Miller and Tyler Samide each had two hits for the Centurions (9-2, 8-1). Tyler Skaggs tossed a complete game, four-hitter for the Eagles (12-1, 9-0).
