Westmoreland County girls basketball results from Monday January 4, 2022:
Belle Vernon 52 Southmoreland 40
Viva Kreis sunk five 3-pointers, leading Belle Vernon to a big upset of Southmoreland 52-40 in Section 3-4A. The turning point in the game came in the third quarter as the Leopards went on an 11-0 run to turn a six-point advantage into a 17-point lead at 40-23 going into the fourth quarter. The Scotties got to within nine points in the final quarter but that's as close as they would get. Belle Vernon led 15-11 after one and 22-16 at the break. Kreis finished with game-high 18 points for the Leopards (6-2, 3-0) with Jenna Dawson adding 10. Olivia Cernuto and Elle Pawlikowsky had 14 and 10 points respectively for the Scotties (5-2, 1-1). The win for Belle Vernon is the first over Southmoreland since the 2018-19 season.
North Allegheny 46 Norwin 43
Jasmine Timmerson's 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted North Allegheny to a 46-43 victory over Norwin in a Section 1-6A contest in Wexford. The Knights led 43-33 but the Tigers reeled off 13 straight points to finish the game. Brianna Zajicek had 15 points for Norwin (5-2, 2-1) while Alyssa Laukus added 11.
Penn-Trafford 45 Butler 40
Maura Suman tallied 17 points to lead Penn-Trafford to a 45-40 Section 1-6A victory at Butler. The Warriors (3-5, 1-2) finished the game on a 10-4 run to help secure the victory. The Golden Tornado suffer their first section loss of the season.
Upper St. Clair 79 Hempfield Area 28
Upper St. Clair stormed out to a 26-6 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 79-28 win at Hempfield Area in a Section 2-6A match up. Alexis Hainesworth put in eight points to lead the Spartans (1-8, 0-3).
Armstrong 58 Kiski Area 46
Kiski Area was outscored by Armstrong 31-22 in the second half and dropped a Section 2-5A contest 58-46. Emma Peck's 18 points paced the Cavaliers (4-5, 0-2) while Karley Keller chipped in with 14.
Burrell 56 Freeport 51
Burrell recovered from a slow start to defeat Burrell 56-51 at home in Section 1-4A action. The Bucs were down 18-7 after the first quarter but got to within 25-22 at halftime then pulled ahead in the third quarter. Hope Clark collected 18 points to lead Burrell (1-8, 1-2) with teammate Addy Landowski tallying 10 points.
Elizabeth Forward 64 Mount Pleasant 34
Elizabeth Forward build up a 36-12 lead at the halftime break and went on to a 64-34 victory over Mount Pleasant in Section 3-4A play. Tiffany Zelmore continued her impressive season scoring 21 points to lead the Vikings (4-4, 1-2).
West Mifflin 37 Yough 24
Yough went down 15-6 through the first half and couldn't find much traction offensively in a 37-24 loss at West Mifflin in a Section 3-4A contest. Autumn Matthews scored eight points to lead the Cougars (3-7, 1-2).
Ellis School 48 Jeannette 12
Jeannette fell behind 18-5 to Ellis School and dropped a 48-12 Section 4-2A match up. Mac Rigney led the Jayhawks (0-8, 0-1) with six points.
Greensburg Central Catholic 75 Springdale 16
Greensburg Central Catholic exploded for 32 points in the first quarter and went on to a dominating 75-16 triumph against Springdale in Section 4-2A play. Mya Morgan poured in 21 points to pace the Centurions (5-2, 1-0). Cara Dupilka added 12 points.
