The boys and girls soccer regular seasons wrapped up on Tuesday, and the WPIAL released its playoff brackets on Wednesday, with the top four teams from each section securing postseason berths. Playoff action will begin this weekend, and will culminate from Nov. 3-5 at Highmark Stadium in Station Square.
Westmoreland County teams are well represented on both the boys and girls sides, as 17 area teams are still in the hunt.
While no county girls teams made the Class 4A playoffs, four Westmoreland County teams are in the 3A field. Greater Latrobe earned the No. 5 seed after the Wildcats finished second in Section 3 at 10-1-1. As a result, the Wildcats will host No. 12 Ringgold on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Franklin Regional, which finished one spot behind Greater Latrobe in the section, with a mark of 7-4-1, garnered the ninth seed. Subsequently, the Panthers will play on the road against No. 8 South Fayette on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Furthermore, Kiski Area was seeded No. 14 after the Cavs tied for fourth place at 5-7-0 in Section 1. On Monday at 6:30, the Cavaliers will play at No. 3 Plum. Penn-Trafford will open play in the bracket, as the No. 16 Warriors, who finished fourth in Section 3, will host No. 17 Connellsville Area in a preliminary-round match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The winning team advances to the round of 16, and will meet top-seeded Mars Area on Monday at 6:30. The quarterfinals in the 3A bracket are slated for next Thursday.
Five county teams are in the Class 2A bracket, as Mount Pleasant Area, Burrell, Southmoreland, Yough, and Valley are all in the field. As Section 3 champions at 10-0-0, Mount Pleasant Area received the second seed, and will play at home against No. 15 West Mifflin on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Burrell, which finished third in Section 2, was seeded ninth, and will play at No. 8 Beaver Area on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Southmoreland, which tied in second place in Section 3 at 6-3-1, is the No. 10 seed and will travel to No. 7 Freeport Area on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Yough, which tied for second with the Scotties, is the No. 11 seed and plays at sixth-seeded Shady Side Academy on Tuesday at 6:30. Lastly, Valley is the No. 16 seed and will battle No. 1 North Catholic at JC Stone Field on Tuesday at 6:30. The winners will move on to the quarterfinals, which will be contested on Saturday, Oct. 29.
In Class 1A, Greensburg Central Catholic is the lone Westmoreland County team in the field. The Centurions finished second in Section 1 at 10-2-0, and received the No. 5 seed. As a result, GCC will play No. 12 Riverside at Peters Township High School on Saturday at 2 p.m. The quarterfinals will occur on Wednesday.
On the boys side, Norwin is the Westmoreland representative in the Class 4A bracket. The Knights finished tied for second in Section 2, and were seeded third. As a result, the Knights will host No. 6 Pine-Richland in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
A trio of local squads are in the 3A bracket, as Franklin Regional, Kiski Area, and Penn-Trafford have all punched their ticket. The Panthers tied atop Section 4 at 13-1-0, and are seeded fourth. Thus, FR will host No. 13 Montour on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cavaliers claimed the Section 1 crown with a mark of 11-1-0, and earned the No. 5 seed. Playing at home on Saturday at 2 p.m., Kiski Area will welcome No. 12 Gateway. Additionally, Penn-Trafford is seeded No. 14 after tying for third in Section 4, at 8-5-1. The Warriors will play at No. 3 Thomas Jefferson on Saturday at 2 p.m. The quarterfinals matchups will take place on Wednesday.
Two teams from Westmoreland made the 2A field, led by Belle Vernon Area, which received the fifth seed. The Leopards finished first in Section 3, at 12-2-0, and will host No. 12 West Mifflin on Monday at 6:30. Mount Pleasant Area, which finished fourth in that same section, was seeded No. 16, and will play on the road against top-seeded South Park on Monday at 6:30. The quarterfinals matches are slated for next Thursday.
In 1A, Greensburg Central Catholic is the headliner, while Burrell also qualified for the postseason. After winning Section 2 at 10-0-0, the Centurions received the top seed and will play No. 16 Bishop Canevin on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Norwin High School. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, were seeded No. 7 after a tie for second place in Section 3, going 9-3-0. Burrell was seeded No. 7 and will host No. 10 Serra Catholic on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The quarterfinals will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29.
