For more than a decade, Ryan Yarosik sat next to one of the most accomplished boys basketball coaches in Westmoreland County. Now, Yarosik is at the helm of a program once again. Yarosik was promoted late last month as the head coach of Greater Latrobe boys basketball, following the resignation of longtime head coach Brad Wetzel earlier this offseason.

“Just fortunate and blessed to be given this opportunity to direct this program,” said Yarosik. “I’ve had a great opportunity to sit down with one of the best in the business here for 11 years as his assistant.

“I’m the right guy for this job because I’m going to do it the right way,” he continued. “We’re going to focus on winning the day.”

Yarosik has experience as the head coach, as he guided the Penn-Trafford boys from 2008-2015. During his tenure with the Warriors, he compiled a mark of 71-86.

He appears poised for more success this time around leading a program.

“Instead of being young and dumb, I’d like to think I’m older and wiser now,” joked Yarosik. “Penn-Trafford helped mold who I am today.”

A graduate of Norwin, Yarosik played collegiately at Slippery Rock University. He teaches at Penn-Trafford Middle School.

Wetzel leaves behind an incredible legacy with the Wildcats, as he achieved a record of 310-226 over 24 seasons at his alma mater. Last season, the Wildcats went 10-13 overall, qualifying for the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, where they fell to Thomas Jefferson in the first round.

“I’m just amazed at the tradition that this program has. I want to keep that tradition alive and keep the alumni happy,” Yarosik detailed.

The 2026-27 campaign will bring plenty of change for the Wildcats, including a new-look section. For the next two seasons, Greater Latrobe will reside in Class 5A Section 1, competing against holdovers Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford, as well as section newcomers Kiski Area, Indiana Area, and Armstrong.

“We’re really going to lock in on those section games,” stated Yarosik. “We want to get in the playoffs, but you can’t do that unless you win section games.”
