Hempfield Area 4 Chambersburg 0 (6A Softball) - WATCH BROADCAST
Julia Varhola tossed a complete game shutout as Hempfield Area advanced to the state semifinals with a 4-0 triumph over Chambersburg in the PIAA 6A quarterfinals at the Windber Athletic Complex. Varhola whiffed 11 batters and yielded just three hits to earn the victory. Kylee Perry recorded a pair of hits for the Trojans (19-5). Abby Magill had an RBI single in the fifth inning and Jocelyn Luft belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the Spartans who will meet Central Dauphin in the semifinals at Philipsburg Osceola on Monday at 4 p.m.
PIAA baseball and softball first round game recaps from Monday, June 1st 2026:
Claysburg-Kimmel 11 Greensburg Central Catholic 10 (9 inn.) (1A Baseball)
Paul-Kenneth Strayer drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting Claysburg-Kimmel to an 11-10 walk-off victory over Greensburg Central Catholic in a PIAA Class 1A first round game at Claysburg-Kimmel High School. The Centurions were two outs away from winning the game in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Bulldogs tallied a run on a fielders choice to tie it prior to Strayer's game-winning base on balls. GCC lead 8-1 early fueled by a grand slam from Anthony Grippo in the second inning. But Claysburg-Kimmel plated six runs in the third to cut the deficit to 8-7. The teams exchanged runs until the Bulldogs rally in the seventh tied it. In addition to Grippo's four RBIs, Tyler Samide rapped two doubles, scored twice and walked twice for Greensburg Central Catholic (17-2). Will Bateson collected three hits and two RBIs while Daniel Brady went 2-for-4 and drove in two. Mason Campagna reached base six times including four hits and two walks for District 6 champion Claysburg-Kimmel (17-7) which will face Elk County Catholic in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Hempfield Area 8 McDowell 6 (6A Softball)
Hempfield Area jumped out to an early lead then held off a McDowell rally to earn an 8-6 victory in a PIAA 6A first round match up at the David Hanlon Complex in Erie. Jayelyn Luft, Ella Berkebile and Emily Bozek each collected two hits for the Spartans with Luft scoring three runs. Jocelyn Luft had a hit and two RBIs. Hempfield Area had leads of 5-0 and 8-2 in the contest. McDowell scored four runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to two but Julia Varhola, who started in the circle but was relieved by Jayelyn Luft, came back into the circle to get the final out via strikeout. Ayva Mickel had two doubles and two RBIs for the District 10 champion Trojans (16-7). Varhola finished with nine strikeouts for Hempfield Area (22-1) which advances to play Chambersburg in the quarterfinal on Thursday.
Sharon 4 Mount Pleasant 0 (3A Softball)
Madelyn Vogan fired a no-hitter as Sharon shut out Mount Pleasant 4-0 in a PIAA 3A first round playoff game at Allegheny College. Vogan finished with a whopping 16 strikeouts in the game and allowed just one baserunner as she hit Sadie Poole to lead off the contest. Mya Bundrant collected two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in a run for the District 10 champion Tigers who will play Suquenita in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Danica Trainer was saddled with the loss despite eight strikeouts in six innings for the Vikings (15-6).
