More than a dozen Westmoreland County soccer teams learned their fate on Wednesday afternoon, as the WPIAL released its girls and boys playoff brackets. Mount Pleasant Area garnered the best seed among county girls teams, while Burrell received the most favorable seed among Westmoreland boys squads.
While no Westmoreland County girls teams qualified in Class 4A, Greater Latrobe, Franklin Regional, Penn-Trafford, and Kiski Area are all in the Class 3A field. The Wildcats, who finished second from Section 3, received the sixth seed, and will host West Allegheny on Monday at 7 p.m. The Panthers, who placed third from the same section, were seeded 10th, and will play at No. 7 Montour on Monday at 7 p.m. The Warriors received the No. 12 seed as the fourth-place squad from Section 3, and will hit the road to face fifth-seeded South Fayette on Monday at 7 p.m. Lastly, the Cavaliers garnered the No. 15 seed as the fourth-place team from Section 1, and Kiski Area will play at second seed Plum on Monday at 7 p.m.
In Class 2A, Mount Pleasant Area, Burrell, Southmoreland, and Yough all qualified for the postseason. The Vikings received the third seed after winning Section 3, and they’ll host No. 14 West Mifflin Area Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Buccaneers, who placed second in Section 2, garnered the No. 6 seed, and they’ll welcome No. 11 Keystone Oaks on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Scotties, who finished as runners-up in Section 3, are seeded eighth and will host No. 9 Quaker Valley on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Lastly, the Cougars received the 16th seed as the fourth-place team from Section 3, and they’ll trek to face top-seeded Avonworth on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Greensburg Central Catholic was the lone county team to clinch a playoff berth in Class 1A. The Centurions, who finished second in Section 1, drew the No. 5 seed, and will play No. 12 South Allegheny at Southmoreland High School on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
On the boys side, Norwin made the cut in Class 4A. The Knights, who finished tied for second from Section 2, received the eighth seed in an eight-team bracket, and will play top-seeded and host Seneca Valley on Saturday, Oct. 28.
In Class 3A, Greater Latrobe and Franklin Regional each made the field. The Wildcats, who placed second in Section 4, received the ninth seed, and will play at No. 8 South Fayette on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers, who finished third from the same section, garnered the No. 11 seed, and will face No. 6 seed and homestanding Mars Area Saturday at 1 p.m.
A quartet of Westmoreland teams earned playoff nods in Class 2A, with Belle Vernon Area, Mount Pleasant Area, Jeannette, and Yough all in the mix. The Leopards captured the Section 3 title, and subsequently received the No. 5 seed, as they’ll host No. 12 East Allegheny Monday at 7 p.m. The Vikings, who finished runners-up from that section, were seeded ninth and will travel to play No. 8 Keystone Oaks at Dormont Stadium Monday at 7 p.m. The Jayhawks, who placed fourth in Section 2, were selected as the No. 15 seed, and will travel to No. 2 Quaker Valley on Monday at 7 p.m. Finally, the Cougars are the No. 16 seed after a fourth-place finish in Section 3, and they’ll square off against top-seeded and host South Park on Monday at 7 p.m.
Additionally, the Class 1A field includes Burrell and Greensburg Central Catholic. The Buccaneers, who tied for the Section 3 crown, were seeded third. The Centurions, who tied for third in Section 2, garnered the No. 14 seed. As a result, the Bucs will host the Centurions on Saturday at 1 p.m.
