Norwin boys soccer has recently found itself as one of the top Class 4A programs in the WPIAL. A big part to the success has been the development and growth of players starting in the youth levels.

Rising senior Caleb Maddock is one of many players who have fit that description of developing from an early age in the system. He recently saw that hard work pay off, as he made his commitment to play collegiate soccer at St. Vincent College.

“I’ve enjoyed this summer knowing that I’m already committed to St. Vincent,” he mentioned. “Just going into this season with high hopes.”

His brother Daniel, a former Norwin standout, is currently a member of the St. Vincent program. With Daniel going through this process not too long ago, he was able to share his advice with Caleb on how to navigate recruitment.

“He (Daniel) explained how good the college was, what the classes were like, what the team was like, and the coach,” he added. “All the stuff really pushed me towards that decision.”

Daniel was part of arguably the most memorable season in Knights boys soccer history, capturing the 2023 WPIAL Class 4A title in shootout fashion. Caleb was not on the varsity at the time, being a couple years younger than Daniel.

However, it is a memory that still sits with Caleb to this day.

“It meant a lot to everyone at Norwin,” he noted. “I remember the feeling of standing in the stands with all of the other freshmen and student body. We were going crazy on the PK shootout.”

With one year remaining before teaming with Daniel, Caleb still wants to go out on a high note with Norwin.

Last year, the Knights had a slow start to the season before finding their rhythm after a 6-2 win against the Hempfield Area Spartans. They finished the year without a loss over the final seven matches heading into the postseason.

After a first round win vs. Woodland Hills, the Knights’ season ended in a 3-2 quarterfinals loss to Plum in a shootout. Caleb scored one of the Norwin goals in the loss.

“Starting this season, we have a lock in our mind that we want to win this WPIAL championship,” the future Bearcat discussed. “We are all motivated after last year’s loss.”

Capturing a title would be a perfect way to cap off his career at Norwin. However, it’s not the athletic accomplishments that he hopes people remember him by when he graduates in the spring.

“I hope they remember the pride we take playing with each other and taking the field with each other every game,” he divulged. “I hope that we don’t lose that type of passion that we have.”
