About the Panthers: Upper St. Clair rolled to a 55-39 semifinals victory against No. 6 Mount Lebanon at Bethel Park High School on Tuesday. In the triumph, senior Rylee Kalocay netted 19 points, while classmate Meredith Kuzjak added a dozen points. Kalocay, a Kent State commit, averages 23.6 points per contest. She missed most of last season with a torn ACL. In the playoff opener, the second-seeded and host Panthers suffocated No. 7 Pine-Richland 43-22 in the quarterfinals. While Kalocay leads USC in scoring, junior Ryan Prunzik paces the team in rebounding average, along with assists. Pete Serio, assisted by his legendary wife, Suzie McConnell-Serio, is the longtime head coach for the Panthers. Upper St. Clair last won WPIAL gold in 2008, but the Panthers reached the title game in three straight seasons until the streak was snapped last campaign.
About the Knights: Norwin pulled away from Canon-McMillan in the fourth quarter in Tuesday’s semifinals clash, as the Knights bested the No. 4 Big Macs 42-26 at Mount Lebanon High School. Senior Kendall Berger was the lone player for Norwin to score in double figures, with 18 points, while junior Ava Christopher added nine points. Berger, a Clarion pledge, leads Norwin in scoring (14.8 points), assists (3.1), steals (2.5), and is tied for the top rebounding average (4.2). Fellow seniors Averi Brozeski and Bella Furno have also signed to continue their careers on the hardwood with Clarion and West Virginia Wesleyan, respectively. Norwin opened the playoffs with a 52-30 quarterfinals victory at home against rival North Allegheny. Last season, the Knights captured their third WPIAL crown at the expense of the Tigers, 56-41. Norwin also won back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016. All of those championships have come under the guidance of 14th-year head coach Brian Brozeski. The Knights and Panthers split the two previous meetings this season, with USC winning 63-53 at Norwin, and the Knights returning the favor with a 56-47 triumph on the road.
