The WPIAL released its softball playoff brackets on Thursday, as more than a dozen Westmoreland County squads learned their path to a potential championship. A pair of area teams – Hempfield Area and Penn-Trafford – garnered the top seeds in the 6A and 5A brackets, respectively. The championship games will be contested at Lilley Field at California University of Pennsylvania on May 28 and 29.
In Class 6A, the Spartans earned a bye to the semifinals, and they will await the winner of the quarterfinals clash between No. 4 Canon-McMillan and fifth-seeded Pine-Richland. Meanwhile, Norwin received the sixth seed, and the Knights will play against North Allegheny on Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.
In the 5A bracket, the Warriors will play No. 16 Moon Area at West Mifflin Area High School on Monday at 3 p.m. Franklin Regional garnered the No. 5 seed, pitting the Panthers against No. 12 Fox Chapel Area at North Allegheny High School Monday at 5 p.m. Moreover, Greater Latrobe is seeded No. 14, as the Wildcats will battle No. 3 West Allegheny at Plum High School on Monday at 7 p.m.
A trio of Westmoreland squads qualified in Class 4A, including a county clash. Derry Area, seeded eighth, and No. 9 Greensburg Salem will play at Norwin High School on Monday at 3 p.m. Additionally, Belle Vernon Area received the No. 11 seed, creating a matchup against sixth seed Beaver Area at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in McMurray on Monday at 6 p.m.
In Class 3A, Mount Pleasant Area earned the fifth seed and a matchup against No. 12 Keystone Oaks at Waynesburg University on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Southmoreland is seeded seventh, as the Scotties will battle No. 10 Hopewell at Trinity High School on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Moreover, Ligonier Valley received the No. 11 seed, as the Rams will play No. 6 McGuffey at West Mifflin Area High School on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Lastly in Class 1A, Jeannette earned the eight seed, pitting the Jayhawks against No. 9 Avella at Pleasant Valley Elementary School on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Also, Greensburg Central Catholic is seeded No. 12, creating a showdown against fifth-seeded Jefferson Morgan at Waynesburg University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
