Defending champion Norwin boys seeded fifth; Mount Pleasant girls garner top seed

The WPIAL released the boys and girls soccer playoff brackets on Wednesday, setting the path for more than a dozen Westmoreland County teams. For the boys, section winner Greater Latrobe received the best seed in the county, while Mount Pleasant Area is a top seed among Westmoreland teams in the girls tournaments.

On the boys side, defending WPIAL Class 4A Champion Norwin garnered the fifth seed. The Knights, who went 8-2-0 to finish as runners-up in Section 1, will host No. 12 North Hills on Tuesday at 6:30.

In Class 3A, Greater Latrobe, Franklin Regional, Penn-Trafford, and Belle Vernon Area all made the cut. The Wildcats, who won Section 3 with a perfect mark of 10-0-0, received the fourth seed, and will welcome No. 13 Ringgold on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Panthers, who went 8-2-0 to finish behind Greater Latrobe, were seeded seventh and will host No. 10 Trinity on Saturday at 1 p.m. As the third-place team from the section at 6-4-0, the Warriors garnered the No. 11 seed and will play at sixth seed Mars Area Saturday at 2. Lastly, the Leopards tied with West Mifflin Area for fourth place in the section at 3-7-0. As a result, BVA garnered the No. 16 seed, and the Titans were seeded No. 17, as they will face off on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in a preliminary matchup at Belle Vernon Area.

Mount Pleasant Area, Southmoreland, and Burrell all made the Class 2A field. The Vikings notched the seventh seed after finishing in second place in Section 4 with a record of 12-2-0. As a result, Mount Pleasant will host No. 10 Shady Side Academy on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Scotties were the third-place squad from the section, compiling a mark of 9-5-0, and consequently received the No. 11 seed. They will travel to play sixth-seeded North Catholic at Mars Area High School on Monday at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers placed fourth in Section 1 with a mark of 8-6-0. As a result, Burrell was seeded No. 13 and will trek to play at fourth seed Quaker Valley Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Lastly, Greensburg Central Catholic qualified for the postseason in Class 1A. The Centurions went 5-3-0 in Section 2, tying for second place. GCC was seeded No. 12 and will play against fifth-seeded Aquinas Academy at Mars Area High School Saturday at 4 p.m.

On the girls side, Penn-Trafford, Norwin, Greater Latrobe, and Hempfield Area all advanced to the playoffs in Class 4A. The Warriors claimed the Section 1 title, notching a mark of 9-1-0. PT received the third seed and a first-round bye. They await the winner of No. 11 Hempfield Area and sixth-seeded and homestanding Canon-McMillan, which takes place on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Spartans finished in fourth in the section, going 3-7-0. The Knights, who went 8-2-0 to finish as runners-up, garnered the No. 5 seed, and they will welcome No. 12 Mount Lebanon on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Wildcats, who finished in third at 7-3-0, were seeded ninth, and will play at No. 8 Pine-Richland Monday at 6:30 p.m.

In Class 3A, Franklin Regional and Kiski Area qualified for the postseason. The Panthers went 10-2-0, good for second place in Section 4. As a result, FR was seeded ninth and will play at No. 8 Montour on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Cavaliers, who finished in third place with a mark of 6-5-1, received the No. 15 seed and will travel to second-seeded South Fayette on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Westmoreland County is well-represented in Class 2A, as Mount Pleasant Area, Burrell, Yough, Belle Vernon Area, and Southmoreland all made the cut. The Vikings earned the top seed after winning Section 4 with a record of 10-0-0. As a result, Mount Pleasant will host No. 16 seed McGuffey on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Buccaneers were seeded ninth after going 7-3-0 as the third-place finisher in Section 2, and Burrell will play against eighth seed Keystone Oaks at Dormont Stadium on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Yough, which tied for third in Section 4 at 5-5-0, garnered the No. 11 seed, and will play No. 6 North Catholic at Freedom Area High School Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Leopards, who tied for second in Section 1 with a record of 8-4-0, received the No. 12 seed and will play at fifth seed Freeport Area Tuesday at 8 p.m. Lastly, the Scotties tied for third in Section 4 at 5-5-0, and they were seeded No. 15, setting up a match at second-seeded Quaker Valley Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In Class 1A, Greensburg Central Catholic qualified for postseason play. The Centurions tied for fourth place in Section 4 with a record of 5-7-0, and GCC was seeded No. 17, creating a preliminary round clash at No. 16 California Area on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The WPIAL Championships will take place at Highmark Stadium in Station Square between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.
