Three Westmoreland County wrestlers stood atop the podium in Hershey over the weekend, as Norwin junior Landon Sidun, senior Elijah Brown of Belle Vernon Area, and Kiski Area sophomore Mario Hutcherson all captured individual state gold in Class 3A.
Sidun was dominant in the 121-pound final, securing a 17-0 technical fall against Tommy Gretz of Connellsville in the title bout, Sidun’s second state crown. The path was not easy for the Penn State commit as he needed overtime to defeat Hatboro-Horsham's Dominick Morrison, 7-6, in the semifinals.
Hutcherson’s title came at 189, as he notched a 4-1 decision against Dominic Sumpolec of Notre Dame-Green Pond. The Cavaliers standout got a takedown at the 1:28 mark of the first period and it turned out to be the difference.
Brown claimed his second gold medal in the PIAA tournament, as he earned an escape 14 seconds into the second period and made it stand as he edged Garnet Valley’s Paxton Hunt with a 1-0 decision at 215 pounds.
Moreover, Franklin Regional’s Michael Ruane took silver at 152, falling by an 18-4 major decision against Gabriel Ballard of Northampton Area. Teammate Beau Fennick was an eighth place finisher at 114 pounds.
Elsewhere in Class 3A, Penn-Trafford’s Dylan Barrett finished fourth at 114 pounds. Greater Latrobe’s Hunter Snyder placed fifth at 189, while Norwin’s Nate Klingensmith also earned a fifth-place finish at 145 pounds. Jack White, another Knights grappler, took eighth in the 160-pound bracket.
Meanwhile in Class 2A, Derry Area’s Mason Horwat suffered a major decision loss, 11-2, to Montoursville’s Gage Wentzel in the 172 final. The Trojans junior had one of the biggest victories of the tournament in the quarterfinals when he upset returning PIAA champion Nick Singer of Faith Christian Academy 6-4.
Derry Area's Brady Brown took home third place at 189 pounds as he picked up a 4-2 decision against Hayden Harvey of Montoursville in Class AA. Teammates Patrick Bulger finished fifth at 114 and Ewan Olson secured seventh place at 160 pounds. Burrell's Cam Baker earned a sixth place finish competing at 127 pounds.
In the girls competition, Kiski Area’s Ava Golding settled for silver at 142, dropping a 6-2 decision to Jenny Gautreau of Owen J Roberts, while Southmoreland’s Zoey Murphy lost via pin to Panther Valley’s Brenda Banks at 235.
