Yough walks off Mount Pleasant; Franklin Regional loses heartbreaker to Armstrong; Norwin rolling

Yough 2 Mount Pleasant 1   WATCH BROADCAST

Adoria Waldier's walkoff double lifted Yough to a 2-1 triumph over visiting Mount Pleasant in a Section 3-3A match up. The game was tied at 1-1 as Sidney Bergman scored on a wild pitch for the Cougars in the first inning and Sophia Smithnosky came home on a ground ball after she led off the fourth inning with a double. With one out in the seventh, Yough's Mikayla Spoonhoward reached on an error and Bergman walked. That set the stage for Waldier who hit a fly ball to right center field that the Vikings couldn't track down. Spoonhoward scored to end the game. Bergman and Waldier each finished with two hits for the Cougars (4-2, 2-2). Bergman allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings to earn the win. Ella Alakson drove in Smithnosky on a groundout for Mount Pleasant (6-5, 2-2).

Norwin 11 Mount Lebanon 1   LISTEN BROADCAST

The Knights scored seven runs over the first two innings, claiming a lopsided 11-1 home victory against Mount Lebanon in six innings. Norwin smacked three singles and drew a walk in the opening inning, and also took advantage of an error by the Blue Devils to plate three runs. In the second frame, the Knights tacked on four more runs on four hits, including a triple by Abbie Telli and a double from Bailey Snowberger. While Mount Lebanon scored its lone run in third, Norwin pitcher Alyssa McCormick stranded the bases loaded to keep her team in control. Madie Kessler enacted the run rule in the bottom of the sixth, as she crushed a two-run homer. In addition to her blast, Kessler drew a pair of walks. Additionally, Michalski was 2-3 with two RBIs and three runs, Snowberger went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored, and Telli and Brookelyn Kotch each notched a pair of hits. While Norwin improved to 6-1 in Class 6A Section 1, Mount Lebanon dropped to 2-4.

Hempfield 8 Pine-Richland 3

Keyed by a five-run outburst in the seventh inning, the Spartans bested homestanding Pine-Richland 8-3. As a result, the Spartans improved to 6-1 in Class 6A Section 1, while the Rams fell to 2-5. Peyton Heisler posted a home run and three RBIs for Hempfield, while Iliana Aggelou homered for PR.

Greater Latrobe 20 Kiski Area 3

The Wildcats recorded a dominant 20-3 victory on the road at Kiski Area. Greater Latrobe improved to 3-1 in Class 5A Section 2, while the Cavaliers fell to 1-3.

Armstrong 4 Franklin Regional 3

Franklin Regional allowed a late lead to slip away in a 4-3 loss to Armstrong in a Section 2-5A clash. The Panthers led 3-2 after six innings but Cassidy Adams came through with a two-run single in the top of the seventh to put the Riverhawks ahead and would clinch the victory. Ciara Camacho and Sydney Jackson each had two hits for the Panthers. Camacho and Madison Nguyen both clubbed home runs. Shelby Cloak cleared the fences for Armstrong. The setback drops Franklin Regional to 2-2 in Class 5A Section 2, while the Riverhawks stay perfect at 4-0.

Penn-Trafford 15 Gateway 0

The Warriors wasted no time in establishing their dominance, scoring nine times in the first inning en route to a 15-0 triumph at home against Gateway. Cam Ponko and Lex Forsythe each homered for Penn-Trafford. The victory moved PT to 2-2 in Class 5A Section 2, while the Gators remained winless at 0-4.

Greensburg Salem 14 Ringgold 4

Gionnah Ruffner blasted a pair of home runs in leading the Golden Lions to a 14-4 win against Ringgold in six innings. The road victory improved GS to 2-3 in Class 4A Section 2, while the Rams tumbled to 0-5. In addition to Ruffner, Greensburg Salem received strong efforts by Kaidence Thomas, who was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and Alle Scarpa, who posted three hits.

Belle Vernon Area 16 Albert Gallatin 0

The Leopards needed just three innings to display their offensive firepower, as BVA rolled to a 16-0 whitewashing of host Albert Gallatin. Ava Zubovic smashed a home run and produced four RBIs, while Mia Zubovic, Maren Metikosh, and Lauren VanDivner contributed two RBIs apiece. Belle Vernon Area improved to 4-1 in Class 4A Section 2, while the Colonials dropped to 2-4.

Ligonier Valley 11 Derry Area 0

Cheyenne Piper proved overwhelming in the circle, as she tossed a one-hitter in guiding the Rams to an 11-0 win against Derry Area in five innings. Piper also registered 11 strikeouts for homestanding LV, while Ruby Wallace had a pair of extra-base hits and three runs batted in. The Rams ascended to 3-1 in Class 3A Section 3, while the Trojans fell to 0-4.

Southmoreland 11 South Allegheny 1

Boosted by four home runs, the Scotties prevailed convincingly in an 11-1 home win against South Allegheny. Amarah McCutcheon, Gianna Perbonish, Mikaela Etling, and Kaylee Doppelheuer each belted homers for Southmoreland, while McCutcheon and Perbonish produced three RBIs each. The Scotties moved to 4-0 in Class 3A Section 3, while the Gladiators fell to 1-3.

Avonworth 4 Burrell 1

Despite a 13-strikeout outing from pitcher Katie Armstrong, Burrell lost at home to Avonworth 4-1. All of the Antelopes’ offense came via the long ball, as Alivia Lantzy smacked a three-run homer, and Rylee Gray added a solo blast. Lantzy also garnered the W in the circle, notching eight strikeouts. The defeat even Burrell’s mark at 2-2 in Class 3A Section 1, while Avonworth moved to 4-0.

Frazier Area 16 Jeannette 2

A 10-run sixth inning turned a competitive matchup into a lopsided 16-2 win for Frazier Area against host Jeannette. The Jayhawks fell to 3-2 in Class 1A Section 3, while the Commodores improved to 5-0. Madison Bednar and Maria Felsher each posted four hits for Frazier.
