Westmoreland County high school baseball recaps from Tuesday, April 18th 2023:
Greater Latrobe 13 Albert Gallatin 3
The Wildcats exploded for three big innings, scoring a lopsided 13-3 road victory against Albert Gallatin in six innings. Greater Latrobe scored four runs in the first inning, added five more in the third, and capped off its outburst with four runs in the sixth frame. Erick Batista, Logan Bradish, and Tyler Fazekas each drove in two runs, while Louie Amatucci, Anthony Massari, Jacob Cramer, and Eli Boring all posted two-hit efforts. Bradish also worked three innings on the bump to earn the win, as he allowed just two hits and fanned six. The Wildcats elevated their mark to 5-1 in Section 2-4A, while the Colonials tumbled to 0-6.
Laurel Highlands 13 Belle Vernon Area 3
The Leopards could not slow down Laurel Highlands offensively, as the Mustangs cruised to a 13-3 victory. With the setback, Belle Vernon Area sits at 2-3 in Section 2-4A, while the Mustangs improved to 3-2. Jake Wessel collected a single and a triple for BVA. Meanwhile, Frank Kula homered and accumulated four RBIs for Laurel Highlands.
Mount Pleasant 17 Brownsville Area 7
Connor Drzal racked up 14 strikeouts, while the Vikings’ offense provided plenty of run support in Mount Pleasant Area’s 17-7 win at Brownsville Area. Cole Chatfield was a dynamo for the Vikes, as he notched a triple and a double and plated three runs. Mount Pleasant Area evened its mark at 3-3 in Section 4-3A, while the Falcons dropped to 1-7.
Derry Area 12 Deer Lakes 9
The Trojans prevailed in a slugfest to capture their first section win, as they outlasted Deer Lakes 12-9. Homestanding Derry Area plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a tie game. Derry Area moved to 1-4 in Section 3-3A, while the Lancers dropped to 1-6. Ashton Beighley earned the win on the mound and notched three runs batted in at the plate, while Brady Angus, Colin Bush, and Roman Fridley each produced a pair of RBIs for Derry Area in the triumph.
Greensburg Central Catholic 18 Brentwood 2
Anthony Grippo had a prolific day at the plate, as he went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBIs in leading the Centurions to a lopsided 18-2 victory at Brentwood. In winning their fifth-straight game overall, GCC improved to 4-1 in Section 2-3A, while the Spartans fell to 1-6. Ian Shipley also chipped in offensive for Greensburg Central Catholic, as he drove in three runs.
Serra Catholic 7 Ligonier Valley 4
Although the Rams played on even terms into the fifth inning, homestanding Serra Catholic scored the final three runs to claim a 7-4 victory. Ligonier Valley dropped to 5-3 in Section 3-2A, while the Eagles moved to 5-1. Logan Johnson had a strong showing for LV, as he collected a pair of hits, including a two-run double. Duncan Foust and Colin Michaels also had RBIs for the Rams. For Serra, Tyler Skaggs provided the decisive RBI double, and he also worked 4.2 no-hit innings of relief with nine punchouts to earn the win.
