Westmoreland County high school baseball recaps from Tuesday, May 9th 2023:
Penn-Trafford 10 Franklin Regional 9
Keyed by a massive performance from Chuck Fontana, the Warriors claimed a 10-9 home win against Franklin Regional. Fontana went 3-for-3 with a home run, collecting four RBIs for Penn-Trafford. As a result, PT earned a share of the section crown, moving to 9-3 in Section 1-5A, while the Panthers dropped to 6-6 and were eliminated from postseason contention. Dylan Grabowski earned the win for Penn-Trafford, and he also posted three RBIs. The Panthers scored five times in the sixth inning, but their rally came up short. Daniel Luko delivered a grand slam, while Josh Hudak blasted a three-run homer in the defeat.
Yough 10 Greensburg Salem 5 WATCH BROADCAST
The Cougars proved opportunistic, besting Greensburg Salem 10-5 to claim the outright section title. Homestanding Yough, which repeated as section champs, moved to 11-1 in Section 4-3A, while the Golden Lions fell to 9-3 to finish second. Yough capitalized on 11 walks and six errors by GS. Jack Sampson was the biggest offensive catalyst, as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Carson Pasinski notched three RBIs on a single and three walks, while Bobby Etze and Matt Sanner also reached safely three times apiece. The Golden Lions were paced by Dom Rosensteel, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Grant Smith also registered a pair of hits.
Shady Side Academy 9 Derry Area 3
The Trojans dropped a 9-3 tilt at Shady Side Academy in the section finale. With the defeat, Derry Area dropped to 5-7 in Section 3-3A, while the Bulldogs ascended to 6-6. Ashton Beighley provided an RBI double for the Trojans. Aedan Reagans, Soren Cooper, and Bryce Trischler each contributed two RBIs for SSA, which has secured a playoff berth.
Greensburg Central Catholic 3 Riverview 2
Max Kallock’s RBI single in the sixth inning proved the difference, as the Centurions edged host Riverview 3-2. As a result of the series sweep, GCC improved to 8-3 in Section 3-2A, deadlocking the Raiders in the standings. Both teams have qualified for the WPIAL playoffs. Ian Shipley and Anthony Grippo also drove in runs for GCC, while Riverview received an 11-strikeout performance on the bump from Ben Hower.
Ligonier Valley 9 Jeannette 0; Ligonier Valley 15 Jeannette 1
The Rams scored a pair of lopsided wins against Jeannette to sweep a doubleheader, prevailing 9-0 and 15-1. In the shutout victory for Ligonier Valley, Tyler Smith and Colin Michaels combined to spin a one-hitter, registering 10 total strikeouts. Duncan Foust provided a pair of doubles and two RBIs for LV. In the other contest, Haden Sierocky recorded nine punchouts on the hill, while Logan Johnston amassed three hits and a pair of RBIs. Nick Rattigan provided the lone RBI for Jeannette. While the postseason-bound Rams elevated their record to 7-5 in Section 3-2A, the Jayhawks tumbled to 1-10.
