Westmoreland County girls basketball game recaps from Tuesday, December 17th 2024:
Hempfield Area 70 Connellsville 50
Hempfield Area was down 17-14 after one quarter but quickly turned it around and lead 34-23 at halftime. The Spartans went on to defeat Connellsville 70-50 in a Section 2-6A contest. Drew Gordon tallied 20 points for Hempfield Area (4-2, 1-1) with teammates Danny Husenits and Max Williams scoring 15 and 10 points respectively. Tyler Burkus had 11 points for the Falcons (2-4, 0-2).
Uniontown 81 Greater Latrobe 53 WATCH BROADCAST
Greater Latrobe trailed by just four points at halftime, 34-30, but was outscored by Uniontown 47-23 in the second half as the Red Raiders captured a Section 1-5A victory by an 81-53 score. John Wetzel's 21 points topped the Wildcats (5-1, 1-1) while Calvin Winfrey poured in a game-high 26 points, including his 1,000th career point, for Uniontown (5-1, 3-0).
McKeesport 55 Franklin Regional 44
McKeesport outscored Franklin Regional 17-4 in the third quarter and closed out a 55-44 victory in Section 1-5A. The Panthers fall to (3-4, 0-2) while the Tigers improve to (3-4, 2-0). Brian Jones led McKeesport with 19 points.
Kiski Area 68 Indiana 45
Kiski Area built up a 17-9 advantage through the first quarter and never looked back in a 68-45 triumph at Indiana in Section 2-5A. Colin Keller's 15 points powered the Cavaliers (3-3, 1-0) with Carson Heinle scoring 14 points and Andrew Zapeda adding 10. Stanford Webb finisehd with 14 points for the Indians (2-4, 0-2).
Knoch 58 Burrell 37
Knoch outscored Burrell in every quarter and secured a 58-37 Section 1-4A win against Burrell. Tucker Bitar's 17 points paced the Buccaneers (3-3, 1-1) while Gavyn Orr added 10. Jackson Bauman poured in 26 points for the Knights (6-1, 2-0).
Deer Lakes 78 Valley 59
Valley dropped its second straight Section 1-4A game, losing to Valley 78-59. The Vikings fall to (3-3, 0-2) while the Lancers are now (6-1, 2-0). Nathaniel Moore finished with 28 points for Deer Lakes.
Belle Vernon 79 Yough 37
Belle Vernon jumped all over Yough, leading 25-10 after the first quarter, and cruised to a 79-37 victory in Section 3-4A play. A total of six players finished in double figures for the Leopards including Luca Ghilani (14), Dane Daugherty (12), Elijah Majors (12), Dominic Ghilani (10), Cameren Jenko (10) and Jude Minniti (10). Tyler Smith tossed in 11 points for the Cougars (1-6, 0-2).
Derry Area 67 Greensburg Salem 63
John Wasnick's 24 points were a game-high, leading Derry Area to a 67-63 win at Greensburg Salem in Section 3-4A action. In addition to Wasnick, Brayden Robinson tallied 18 points and Staley Rajkovich put in 17 points for the Trojans who trailed 33-30 at halftime. Ty Harkcom scored 17 points for the Golden Lions (1-4, 1-1) with Tyler Martin and Solomon Cain each contributing 16.
Jeannette 70 Bentworth 42
Kymon'e Brown scored 17 points as Jeannette claimed a Section 1-2A win at Bentworth. Markus McGowan's 13 points and Jayce Powell's 10 points also helped lead the Jayhawks (5-0, 2-0). Chris Harper put in 17 points for the Bearcats (2-4, 0-2).
Greensburg Central Catholic 58 Clairton 27
With the game tied at 11 through the first eight minutes, Greensburg Central Catholic went on an 18-6 run into halftime and outscored Clairton 22-7 in the third to defeat the Bears 58-27 in a Section 1-2A game. Liam Gallagher registered 21 points for the Centurions (6-0, 2-0) with Samir Crosby and A.J. Tarpley each scoring 13 points.
Central Valley 72 Southmoreland 29
Southmoreland trailed 26-6 after one quarter and fell to Central Valley 72-29 in a non-section clash. Noah Felentzer had 19 points for the Scotties (3-2, 0-0) while Isaiah Jeter recorded 15 points for the Warriors (6-0, 0-0).
