Westmoreland County girls basketball game recaps from Thursday, January 9th 2025:

Upper St. Clair 75 Hempfield Area 55

Upper St. Clair erupted for 30 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 75-55 Section 2-6A win over Hempfield Area. Meredith Huzjak collected 23 points for the first place Panthers (8-2, 3-0) while Mads Pevarnik put in 15 points for the Spartans (7-5, 1-3).

Franklin Regional 63 Armstrong 36

Madison DeRiggi poured in 19 points as Franklin Regional earned a 63-36 victory at Armstrong in Section 1-5A play. The Panthers trailed after one quarter but led 20-17 at halftime then dominated the Riverhawks in the second half. In addition to DeRiggi, Chloe Pucka recorded 11 points for first place Franklin Regional (8-5, 5-0). Isabella Yancy finished with nine points for Armstrong (2-10, 1-5).

Greater Latrobe 54 Greensburg Salem 46

Maggie Maiers racked up 20 points in helping lead Greater Latrobe to a 54-46 victory over visiting Greensburg Salem in a Section 2-5A match up. Also for the Wildcats, Brianna Havrilla reached double figures with 17 points. Mya Heasley and Vienna Jevicky each collected 12 points for the Golden Lions (7-6, 1-4) who led 14-12 after the first quarter.

Penn-Trafford 55 Kiski Area 22

Four players finished in double figures for Penn-Trafford as the Warriors went on to a 55-22 triumph over Kiski Area in a Section 2-5A game. Izzy Fontana, Lauren Marton and Kam Pieper each came in with 12 points for first place Penn-Trafford (12-0, 5-0) while Maddie Joyce ended with nine points for Cavaliers (7-5, 2-3).

Oakland Catholic 46 Derry Area 19

Derry Area trailed 28-5 through the first eight minutes and fell to Oakland Catholic 46-19 in Section 1-4A. Kylee Metcalf scored a team-high seven points for the Trojans (3-7, 1-4) while Josie Fontana had 10 points for the Eagles (9-2, 5-1).

Burrell 54 Valley 36

Burrell stormed out to a 19-4 advantage and topped Valley 54-36 in a Section 1-4A battle. Casey Brancato's 13 points powered the Buccaneers (9-4, 4-2). Jules Fisher and McKenna Miller added 12 and 10 points respectively. Janelle Norman finished with a game-high 22 points for the Vikings (1-12, 0-6).

Elizabeth Forward 56 Yough 21

Elizabeth Forward scored 23 of the games first 25 points in a 56-21 win against Yough in Section 3-4A. Michelle Jellison, Kaelynn Settles and Chloe Zombek all scored 13 points for the Warriors (8-3, 5-0). The Cougars drop to (8-4, 3-2).

Belle Vernon 41 Mount Pleasant 18

Belle Vernon outscored Mount Pleasant in every quarter as the Leopards captured a 41-18 victory against Mount Pleasant in a Section 3-4A contest. Saylor Lee ended with a game-high 13 points for Belle Vernon (5-8, 3-3) with teammate Aubrey Brown scoring 11. Raleigh Drazal tallied 11 points for the Vikings (1-11, 1-5).

South Park 66 Southmoreland 16

Southmoreland dropped a 66-16 Section 3-4A game to South Park as the Scotties were shutout in the first quarter. Ashley Seder had seven points for the Scotties (3-10, 1-5) while Addison Kerr put up 16 points for the Eagles (8-2, 5-0) who are tied with Elizabeth Forward for first place.

Ligonier Valley 51 East Allegheny 17

Sydnee Foust poured in 17 points as Ligonier Valley took down East Allegheny 51-17 in Section 2-3A. The Rams improve to (3-6,2-3) while the Wildcats drop to (1-8, 0-5).

Shady Side Academy 62 Greensburg Central Catholic 33

In a marquee matchup between two top teams in Class 3A, Shady Side Academy scored an impressive 62-33 victory over Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 2-3A. Jayla Peterson put in 18 points for the Centurions (7-3, 3-1) while Karis Thomas collected 24 points for the Bulldogs (13-0, 6-0). Shady Side Academy held a 12-7 lead after one quarter and 28-13 at halftime.

Winchester Thurston 62 Jeannette 20

Jeannette dug itself an early hole, trailing 26-5 after one quarter, and dropped a Section 4-2A game to Winchester Thurston 62-20. Navarah Smith's eight points were most on the Jayhawks (4-7, 0-3) while Sky Still recorded 18 points for the Bears (9-2, 4-0).
