Westmoreland County girls basketball game recaps from Thursday, December 12th 2024:

Penn-Trafford 57 Greensburg Salem 31   WATCH BROADCAST

Penn-Trafford scored 22 points in the first quarter and went on to defeat Greensburg Salem 57-31 to open Section 2-5A play for both teams. The Warriors held a slim 15-12 lead with under two minutes left in the opening frame but finished the period on a 7-0 run to take control of the game. Lauren Marton scored 14 points and Kameron Pieper added 12 for Penn-Trafford (7-0, 1-0). Blessing Gantt finished with nine points for the Golden Lions (3-2, 0-1).

Greater Latrobe 51 West Mifflin 27

Greater Latrobe topped West Mifflin 51-27 in the Section 2-5A opener. Carley Berk put in 13 points to pace the Wildcats (4-2, 1-0). The Titans drop to (1-3, 0-1).

Franklin Regional 54 Plum 37

A trio of players for Franklin Regional reached double figures as the Panthers won at Plum 54-37 in the first game of Section 1-5A action this season. Franklin Regional lead 26-22 at halftime but outscored the Mustangs 28-15 in the second half. Addison Musto's 17 points led all scorers while Chloe Pucka added 16 points and Madison DeRiggi ended with 11 for the Panthers (3-3, 1-0). Tamia West tallied 16 points for Plum (1-3, 0-1).

Burrell 51 Highlands 25

Burrell continued its hot start to the season by beginning Section 1-4A play with a 51-25 triumph at Highlands. The game was tied at 9-9 after one quarter but the Buccaneers outscored the Golden rams 17-4 in the second quarter to take a big lead at halftime. Casey Brancato (12), McKenna Miller (12) and Mikayla Coury (11) all finished in double-figures for Burrell (5-0, 1-0). Tyarah Woody's 17 points were a game-best for Highlands (0-6, 0-1).

Freeport 42 Derry Area 25

Derry dropped its Section 1-4A opener to Freeport 42-25. The Trojans are now (2-3, 0-1) while the Yellowjackets improve to (1-4, 1-0).

Elizabeth Forward 64 Southmoreland 21

Southmoreland managed just two points in the first quarter and was down 50-8 at halftime, losing to Elizabeth Forward 64-21 in a Section 3-4A tilt. Olivia Aumer accounted for 13 of the 21 points scored by the Scotties (2-4, 0-1). Chloe Zombek paced all scorers with 19 points for the Warriors (2-3, 1-0).

Belle Vernon 41 Ringgold 27

Skylar Salay scored 14 points helping lead Belle Vernon to a 41-27 Section 3-4A win at Ringgold. The Leopards built up a 16-5 advantage through the first eight minutes of the contest and didn't look back. In addition to Salay, Aubrey Brown contributed 12 points for the Leopards (3-3, 1-0). Rhianna Fordham put in 11 for the Rams (3-2, 0-1).

Yough 29 Mount Pleasant 27

Yough opened Section 3-4A play by edging Mount Pleasant 29-27 at home. Carly Fitzgibbons tallied a team-high seven points for the Cougars (4-2, 1-0) while Kayla Rumbaugh, Carmella Spallone and Ryleigh Drzal all had six points for the Vikings (0-5, 0-1).

Greensburg Central Catholic 75 Steel Valley 13

Greensburg Central Catholic stormed out to a 25-2 lead and went on to secure an easy 75-13 win over visiting Steel Valley in a Section 2-2A contest. Erica Gribble poured in 22 points for the Centurions (3-2, 1-0) with Jayla Peterson finishing with 15 points and Erica Rodriguez scoring 10.

Avonworth 72 Ligonier Valley 14

Avonworth scored 55 first half points, cruising to a 72-14 win at Ligonier Valley in Section 2-2A action. Sydney Foust had eight points for the Rams (1-3, 0-1) while Greta O'Brien finished with 17 for the Antelopes (3-1, 1-0).
