Panthers edge Wildcats on field goal; PT drops conference opener; Greensburg Salem stays perfect

Seneca Valley 26 Norwin 6 (SV: 1-2; NOR: 2-2) - WATCH BROADCAST

Norwin struggled to contain the Seneca Valley rushing attack, as the Raiders notched a 26-6 win against the Knights. As a result, homestanding Norwin drops to 0-1 in Class 6A, while the Raiders improve to 1-0. Seneca Valley opened the scoring with a 74-yard return TD on a fumble by Tristyn Tavares. The Raiders added TD runs by Cayden Parker and Chase Mazanek and a field goal to take a 23-0 advantage. Norwin’s lone score came on a 38-yard pass from Tavares to Cooper Wilson in the third quarter. Tavares finished 10-of-22 passing for 130 yards, and he added 60 yards on the ground. Conversely, Parker posted 98 yards on the ground, and Mazanek added 95 yards rushing.

Franklin Regional 3 Greater Latrobe 0 (FR: 3-1; GL: 3-1) - WATCH BROADCAST

Joey Bayne’s field goal in the fourth quarter provided the only points, as Franklin Regional edged Greater Latrobe 3-0. Bayne’s kick spanned 22 yards with 4:59 left in the contest, and the Panthers’ defense made it stand, posting the shutout. Thus, FR moves to 1-0 in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while Greater Latrobe drops to 0-1. Kyle Dupill enjoyed a strong outing for the homestanding Panthers, as he amassed 161 yards on the ground. On the other side, Alex Tatsch had 10 carries for 112 yards for the Wildcats, but lost two fumbles.

Woodland Hills 35 Penn-Trafford 21 (WH: 2-2; PT: 2-2) - WATCH BROADCAST

Penn-Trafford was doomed by four interceptions and three turnovers on downs in a 35-21 loss at home to Woodland Hills. Consequently, the Warriors dipped to 0-1 in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while the Wolverines ascended to 1-0. Warriors QB Jonny Lovre completed 16-of-27 passes for 197 yards and two scores, but his turnovers loomed large. Tasso Whipple added 90 yards rushing for PT, while Jack Weishaar registered a pair of touchdown receptions. Meanwhile, Wolverines quarterback Cam Walter threw for 80 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to Malik McCloud. Scoop Smith added 46 yards receiving and a score, as well as 62 yards rushing for Woodland Hills.

Derry Area 32 Burrell 13 (DA: 2-2; BUR: 0-4) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Justin Papuga and Demauri Robinson each notched a pair of scores in leading Derry Area to a 32-13 victory at Burrell. Papuga totaled 97 yards rushing for the Trojans, while Trey Coury registered 153 yards rushing and a TD for the Buccaneers.

Jeannette 43 Frazier 24 (JEAN: 4-0; FRZ: 1-3) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Kymon’e Brown threw for three touchdowns in leading Jeannette to a 43-24 home victory against Frazier. With the win, Jeannette moves to 1-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while Frazier falls to 0-1. Brown hooked up with Noah Sunder on a 70-yard score, hit Jayce Powell on a 32-yard connection, and added a 19-yard TD to Xavier Odorisio-Farrow. Powell added another TD catch spanning 60 yards from Markus McGowan, as well as a 64-yard punt return score for the Jayhawks. Brown went 6-of-9 for 184 yards through the air, while Sunder caught four passes for 96 yards and Powell amassed two grabs for 92 yards. Nick Mendoza was the top rusher for Jeannette, registering six carries for 72 yards and a TD.

North Allegheny 42 Hempfield Area 14 (NA: 4-0; HA: 1-3)

Although Hempfield Area played on even terms with North Allegheny in the first half, the visiting Tigers scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to claim a 42-14 victory. North Allegheny moves to 1-0 in Class 6A play, while the Spartans drop to 0-1. Rogan Katchur notched a 4-yard touchdown run, while Aidan Allison hauled in a 6-yard TD pass from Dom Detruf in the first half for Hempfield. Luke Rohan scored three TDs after halftime for NA.

Gateway 28 Kiski Area 7 (GATE: 2-2; KA: 1-3)

Plagued by five turnovers, Kiski Area fell at home to Gateway 28-7. The Cavaliers trailed 28-0 at the half to the Gators, who received three TDs from Amari Gans – two rushing and one receiving. Kiski Area’s only score came on a 9-yard run by Landon Kucic in the fourth quarter. Kucic compiled 91 yards rushing in the setback, while Cavaliers QB Carson Heinle connected on 12-of-21 throws for 151 yards and three picks. While Gateway improves to 1-0 in the Class 5A Big East Conference, Kiski Area dips to 0-1.

McKeesport Area 28 Belle Vernon Area 7 (McK: 1-3; BVA: 1-1)

Belle Vernon Area failed to slow down McKeesport Area’s Kemon Spell, while the Leopards failed to eclipse 100 yards of offense in a 28-7 loss to the Tigers. Spell rushed 15 times for 150 yards and three scores for host McKeesport, while Anthony Cromerdie added 63 yards rushing and a TD. The Leopards, conversely, were held to just 98 yards, including a 7-yard run by Kole Doppelheuer that accounted for the lone touchdown.

Greensburg Salem 7 Ringgold 0 (GS: 4-0; RING: 1-3)

Brody Chismar connected with Max Topper for a touchdown pass, and the Greensburg Salem defense did the rest, guiding the Golden Lions to a 7-0 win at Ringgold. As a result, GS stays perfect on the season at 4-0. The 18-yard passing score came in the third quarter, as Body Chismar went 6-of-7 passing for 62 yards and the TD, and he added 57 yards rushing. Brady Smith paced the GS ground game, rushing for 67 yards on 17 attempts, while Topper had three grabs for 39 yards.

Blackhawk 45 Southmoreland 20 (BHK: 2-2; SM: 3-1)

A trio of long touchdowns by Blackhawk’s Brayden McCarthy was Southmoreland’s undoing, as the Scotties dropped a 45-20 outcome at home against Blackhawk. McCarthy notched a 96-yard kickoff return score, and touchdown receptions spanning 80 and 53 yards for the Cougars. In the defeat, Ethan Shawley scored a pair of rushing TDs, including a 46-yard scamper, and Cam Phillips added an 18-yard touchdown run.

New Castle 27 Yough 7 (NC: 3-0; YOU: 2-2)

Yough struggled to slow Kyrell Harris, who scored twice in propelling New Castle to a 27-7 win against the Cougars. Harris notched TD runs covering 22 and 94 yards for the Red Hurricanes. Cougars QB Raidon Kuroda accounted for their lone score, a 3-yard run.

Ambridge Area 28 Mount Pleasant Area 10 (AMB: 2-2; MP: 2-2)

Mount Pleasant Area dropped a 28-10 contest at Ambridge Area. As a result of the nonconference outcome, the Vikings fall to 2-2 overall, while the Bridgers ascend to 2-2.

Ligonier Valley 40 Shady Side Academy 28 (LV: 2-2; SSA: 1-3)

John Jablunovsky rushed for 190 yards, while Mark Jablunovsky caught eight passes for 202 yards in leading Ligonier Valley to a 40-28 home win against Shady Side Academy. With the triumph, the Rams move to 1-0 in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-1. Rams QB Bowie Schreyer enjoyed a breakthrough effort, as he hit on 9-of-11 throws for 220 yards and four scores.

Clairton 47 Greensburg Central Catholic 0 (CLA: 4-0; GCC: 1-2)

Playing their only true home game of the season, Clairton overwhelmed Greensburg Central Catholic in a 47-0 win. Thus, the Bears move to 1-0 in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while the Centurions fall to 0-1. Although GCC only trailed 14-0 at the half, Clairton added five rushing scores in the second half. Drahcir Jones compiled three scores on the ground for the Bears, amassing 20 carries for 217 yards. Offensively, the Centurions notched just three first downs in the shutout.
