Westmoreland County baseball game recaps from Tuesday, April 9th 2024:

Hempfield Area 10 Baldwin 0

Carson Shuglie's two-run homer in the third inning helped power Hempfield Area to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Baldwin in Section 2-6A. Shuglie's long ball gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead before they added six runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. Parker Donsen and Chase Sikorski each drove in two runs and Dylan Firmstone collected two hits for Hempfield Area (8-0, 4-0). Firmstone earned the win on the mound allowing just one hit in four innings. He struck out five.

Canon-McMillan 7 Norwin 4

Canon-McMillan scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to outlast Norwin 7-4 in a Section 2-6A match up. The Knights built up a 4-1 lead through the third inning but the Big Macs tied the game by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. Keegan Carr finished with four hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for Norwin (4-3, 2-1). Nolan Ryan added two hits. Nico Patragas hit the go-ahead double in the top of the ninth for Canon-McMillan (2-4, 2-2).

Penn-Trafford 8 Plum 0   WATCH BROADCAST

Ethan Septak finished with two hits and four RBIs leading Penn-Trafford to a 8-0 shutout of Plum in Section 1-5A action. In addition to Septak, Brayden Stone also had a big day for P-T collecting two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Dom Delio (5 innings) and Zach Feldman (2 innings) combined to throw a two-hit shutout for the Warriors (7-1, 5-1). Sean Franzi ended with a hit and a walk for the Mustangs (4-4, 2-2).

Belle Vernon 3 Uniontown 1

Belle Vernon edged Uniontown in a pitchers duel, 3-1, in Section 2-4A. Leopards pitcher Colton Lee racked up an impressive 15 strikeouts and allowed just one run, a solo home run by Tate Musko, in the seventh inning. The Leopards (4-1, 1-0) scored their three runs on a wild pitch, RBI single from Jake Gedekoh and an error. The Red Raiders fall to (1-3, 0-1).

Greater Latrobe 7 Ringgold 2

Greater Latrobe erased an early 2-0 deficit by tallying four runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth in a 7-2 victory against Ringgold in a Section 2-4A battle. Luke Nipar-Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored for the Wildcats (6-1, 3-0). Brody Rumon doubled and drove in three runs while Riley Smith finished with two RBIs. Smith was the winning pitcher as he went six innings allowing two runs on five hits and struck out seven. Demetri Lowe doubled for the Rams (2-4, 0-2).

Hampton 10 Kiski Area 2

Hampton brought home five runs in the third inning to pull away from Kiski Area 10-2 in a Section 4-4A victory. Tylar Hanley collected two hits while Nate Witt contributed a run-scoring double for the Cavaliers (4-2, 1-1). Ryan Sully homered, doubled and knocked in three runs to lead the Talbots (4-1, 2-1).

Burrell 3 Freeport 1

Stephen Hasson allowed an unearned run in a complete game victory leading Burrell to a 3-1 triumph at Freeport in Section 3-3A play. Trey Coury drove in a run with a double in the fourth inning and finished with two RBIs for the Bucs (2-4, 2-3). Hasson finished with six strikeouts surrendering just three hits. The Yellowjackets fall to (1-4, 1-3).

Valley 19 Shady Side Academy 0

Jacob Staraniec cracked a home run, doubled and collected five RBIs as Valley exploded for 14 runs in the seventh inning to crush Shady Side Academy 19-0 in a Section 3-3A contest. In addition to Staraniec, Alexander Vagnier drove in three runs and Tyler Danko doubled twice and brought in two for the Vikings (4-2, 2-1). The Bulldogs are now (4-1, 4-1).

Mount Pleasant 7 Greensburg Salem 6   LISTEN BROADCAST

Brady Painter scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch as Mount Pleasant edged Greensburg Salem 7-6 in a Section 4-3A game. Sonny Marne went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Vikings (4-3, 2-0). Peyton Chismar and Tyler Martin each finished with three hits for the Golden Lions (3-3, 2-2). Chismar doubled twice and drove in three runs while Martin had a double and scored three runs. Jordan Grieff was the winning pitcher.

Waynesburg Central 6 Yough 3 (10 inn.)

Waynesburg scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to pull away from Yough and earn an extra inning victory 6-3 in Section 4-3A. Alex Vansickle ended 4-for-5 with three doubles for the Raiders (3-0, 2-0). The Cougars fall to (2-4, 2-1).

Ligonier Valley 11 Apollo-Ridge 1

Ligonier Valley scored 11 runs on 11 hits in an 11-1, six-inning triumph against visiting Apollo-Ridge in Section 3-2A. Jake Petalino collected three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Rams (2-3, 1-2). Gavin Moore added two hits and brought in three. Duncan Foust tossed five scoreless innings for the victory. Richard Peach had two hits and knocked in a run for the Vikings (0-5, 0-4).

Jeannette 13 Brentwood 4

Jeannette exploded for 10 runs over the first two innings in a 13-4 win against visiting Brentwood in Section 3-2A. Kenny Himes and Michael Mason each went 3-4 with a double for the Jayhawks (3-1, 1-0). Himes added three RBIs. Brayden Luttner was the winning pitcher. Zach Wuenschell went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Brentwood (1-3, 0-3).
