Derry snaps losing streak; Franklin Regional edges Latrobe; Jeannette falls in OT

Derry Area 26 Greensburg Salem 21   (DA: 1-1; GS: 0-2)   WATCH BROADCAST

The Trojans snapped the longest losing streak in the WPIAL, courtesy of a 26-21 home victory against Greensburg Salem. Derry Area, which had a 20-game skid entering play, captured a win for the first time since the 2020 season. Ahmad Ward had a breakout game with 291 all-purpose yards. Ward rushed 28 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns plus had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Golden Lions, who scored the final 21 points of the contest, were led by Julian Stevens, who snagged a 19-yard touchdown.

Mount Pleasant Area 27 Yough 13   (MP: 1-1; YOU: 0-2)   WATCH BROADCAST

Quarterback Cole Chatfield enjoyed a strong performance in guiding the Vikings to a 27-13 victory on the road against Yough in a Westmoreland County clash. Chatfield hit on 8-of-13 attempts for 163 yards and three scores, including a pair of TDs to Lucas Nicotera, who had six catches for 109 yards. Garrett Eicher rushed 11 times for 98 yards and a score for Mount Pleasant. Yough, which scored twice in the fourth quarter, was led by QB Raidon Kuroda, who passed for 170 yards and rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Penn Hills 27 Norwin 0   (PH: 2-0; NOR: 0-2)   WATCH BROADCAST

Norwin was stifled by the Penn Hills’ defense, as the Indians claimed a 27-0 win on the road. Tristyn Tavares threw for 110 yards in the setback for the Knights. Pitt commit Julian Dugger amassed 125 yards through the air, while adding 88 yards on the ground, notching two total touchdowns for Penn Hills. Amir Key added two more scores for the Indians in the 5A nonconference matchup.

Franklin Regional 28 Greater Latrobe 21   (FR: 1-1; GL: 1-1)

A pair of touchdowns by Kyle Dupill and a goal line stand in the waning moments give the Panthers a 28-21 victory on the road against Greater Latrobe in a county battle at Memorial Stadium. Dupill’s second TD run put FR in the lead in the final quarter, as he amassed 115 yards rushing. Chase Lemke added a pair of touchdown passes in a 10-for-14 performance for FR. Greater Latrobe QB John Wetzel hit on 8-of-19 passes for 184 yards, while JaTawn Williams caught four passes for 124 yards and added a 99-yard kickoff return score.

McKeesport Area 17 Penn-Trafford 7   (McK: 2-0; PT: 0-2)

The Warriors were mistake-prone on offense, as they fell on the road to McKeesport Area 17-7. The Tigers’ defense collected three interceptions, while a 48-yard pass from Valdez Stuvaints to Dominique Cochran gave the Tigers a lead they didn’t relinquish. Carmen Metcalfe paced the PT offense with eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Connellsville 28 Hempfield Area 7   (CONN: 1-1; HA: 1-1)

The Spartans had no solution for Bruce Giles, who rushed 26 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns to lead the host Falcons to a 28-7 triumph. Additionally, Anthony Piasecki threw for two scores for Connellsville. Mitchell Bitar scored the only TD for Hempfield Area, as he recovered a fumble by Rogan Katchur in the end zone.

Pine-Richland 48 Kiski Area 0   (PR: 1-1; KA: 0-2)

The Cavaliers had no answers for the Pine-Richland rushing attack, as the homestanding Rams cruised to a 48-0 whitewashing of Kiski Area. PR rushed for 268 yards on the ground and six touchdowns, with Bryce O’Brien and Ethan Pillar each scoring twice. In the defeat, the Cavs were paced by Landon Kucic, who rushed for 88 yards.

Southmoreland 48 Ligonier Valley 7   (SOU: 2-0; LV: 1-1)

Da’sjon Craggette was dominant in leading the Scotties to a lopsided 48-7 victory against Ligonier Valley at Weller Field. Craggette, who surpassed 200 yards rushing in his Scotties debut last week, amassed 193 yards and three scores on just a dozen carries. Additionally, Southmoreland QB Kadin Keefer hooked up with Ty Keffer on a pair of TD passes. Aaron Dennison accounted for the lone score for the Rams on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Belle Vernon Area 40 Laurel Highlands 0   (BVA: 1-0; LH: 1-1)

Playing for the first time since capturing the PIAA title last December, the Leopards cruised to a 40-0 win at Laurel Highlands. Penn State commit Quinton Martin scored four total touchdowns, eclipsing 100 yards rushing and a pair of scores, while snagging two TD passes. Anthony Crews and Jake Gedekoh also added touchdown runs for BVA.

Valley 18 Apollo-Ridge 7   (VALL: 1-1; AR: 1-1)

A pair of touchdown connections from Mason Simmons to Dorian Briggs provided all of the offense Valley needed, as it ousted Apollo-Ridge 18-7 in the battle of the Vikings. With the win, head coach Mark Adams earns his first victory at the helm of Valley.

Deer Lakes 33 Burrell 0  (DL: 1-1; BURR: 0-2)

The Buccaneers’ offense sputtered, as Burrell barely eclipsed 100 total yards in a 33-0 shutout defeat at Deer Lakes in an AK Valley clash. Devin Beattie paced the Bucs with 67 yards rushing on 22 attempts. Lancers QB Derek Burk went 7-of-9 on passing attempts for 111 yards and three scores.

East Allegheny 33 Jeannette 30 (OT)   (EA 1-1; JEA: 1-1)

A four-yard touchdown run by Michael Cahill in overtime proved to be the difference as East Allegheny outlasted Jeannette 33-30 in an incredible non-conference game. The Jayhawks led 14-0 after one but then found themselves trailing 27-14 in the third quarter. Rushing touchdowns from Payton Molter and Noah Sanders tied the game at 27. In the extra frame, Austin Emery's 27-yard field goal on Jeannette's opening drive put the Jayhawks ahead but the Wildcats answered with the game-winning run from Cahill on the ensuing drive. Sanders finished with 215 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries for Jeannette. He also caught a touchdown pass. Payton Molter finished 16-23 for 136 yards and the toss to Sanders.

Bishop Canevin 26 Greensburg Central Catholic 6   (BC: 1-0; GCC: 1-1)

With nearly 600 yards of offense and a hat trick of touchdowns by Azjuan Mitchell, Bishop Canevin bested the host Centurions 26-6 in a Class 1A nonconference showdown. Crusaders QB Kole Olszewski went 11-of-21 for 180 yards and three scores, although the Centurions forced three interceptions. Samir Crosby rushed for the only touchdown for GCC, and he added 119 yards through the air while spelling Tyree Turner.

Cornell 20 Monessen 6 (COR: 2-0; MON: 0-2)

Raiders quarterback CJ Jackson tossed a pair of touchdowns in leading Cornell to a 20-6 win at home against Monessen.
