Westmoreland County boys basketball section recaps from Tuesday, January 24th 2023:

Deer Lakes 89 Derry Area 64   WATCH BROADCAST

Derry couldn't capitalize off of a strong first quarter, dropping a Section 3-3A match up to visiting Deer Lakes 89-64. The Trojans led 15-14 with just over a minute left in the first but the run-and-gun style of the Lancers responded with a 17-2 run and went into halftime with a 43-32 lead. Deer Lakes widened the advantage to 58-42 through three quarters. Gabe Carbonara scored a team-high 17 points for Derry Area (7-7, 3-4). Ethan Frye added 15 points while Nate Papuga put in 14 for the Trojans. Aiden Fletcher boasted 20 points for the Lancers (10-6, 7-1) who move into a first place tie with Shady Side Academy.

Burrell 78 Ligonier Valley 66

Burrell used a big first half to secure a 78-66 victory at Ligonier Valley in Section 3-3A play. The Buccaneers were ahead 23-13 through the first eight minutes then 45-24 at the half. The Rams played a better second half but couldn't recover from the large deficit. Macky Bennis poured in a game-high 31 points for third place Burrell (9-8, 6-2). Tucker Bitar and Maliq Buchak each tallied 12 points while Ryan Croushore scored 11 for the Bucs. Chet Dillamen paced Ligonier Valley (3-15, 2-6) with 22 points with Parker Hollick adding 17.

Mt. Pleasant 47 McGuffey 31

Mount Pleasant earned a 47-31 win over visiting McGuffey in a Section 4-3A game. The Vikings improve to (4-12, 3-4).

Greensburg Central Catholic 83 Serra Catholic 73

Four players reached double-figures for Greensburg Central Catholic in an important 83-73 triumph at Serra Catholic in Section 3-2A play. Tyree Turner and Franco Alvarez scored 24 and 23 points respectively for the Centurions who led 21-10 after the first quarter and 37-31 at halftime. Samir Crosby had 14 points while Jayden Canady ended with 12 for first place GCC (11-5, 7-1). Owen Dumbroski's 19 points topped the Eagles (8-8, 5-3).

Pine-Richland 62 Hempfield Area 39

Pine-Richland outscored Hempfield Area in every quarter, going on to a 62-39 non-section win against the visiting Spartans. Harry Sowers finished with 13 points to lead the Spartans (6-11, 1-4). Josh Gimble reached 21 points for the Rams (4-11, 1-4).

Laurel Highlands 46 Norwin 38

Norwin trailed just 24-23 at halftime but Laurel Highlands used a second half push to upend the Knights 46-38 in a non-section affair. A basket by Justin Weaver pulled Norwin to within 39-38 with 3:49 left in regulation but the Knights were unable to score the rest of the way. Weaver and Ryan Edwards scored 12 and 11 points respectively for the Knights (9-6, 2-3). Rodney Gallagher tossed in 15 points for the Mustangs (13-2, 4-1).

Greater Latrobe 50 Quaker Valley 47

Greater Latrobe used a huge fourth quarter to complete a late rally and defeat Quaker Valley 50-47 in a non-section contest. Down 38-33 heading into the final frame, the Wildcats went on a 17-9 run to secure the victory. Landon Butler's 19 points powered Greater Latrobe (6-10, 1-4). John Wetzel came in with 15. Troy Kozar led the Quakers (9-5, 4-1) with 14 points.

Southmoreland 84 Valley 61

Ty Keffer's 22 points helped guide Southmoreland to a 84-61 non-section triumph against Valley. The Scotties built up a 53-28 halftime advantage over the Vikings. In addition to Keffer, Wyatt Richter (19), Noah Felentzer (11), Elijah Myers (11) and Ronnie Collins (10) all reached double-figures for Southmoreland (12-5, 2-3). Keysiyah Clay tallied 16 points for Valley (3-14, 2-5).

North Hills 85 Penn-Trafford 49

Penn-Trafford was outscored in every quarter by visiting North Hills in an 85-49 loss in non-section action. The Warriors didn't have an answer for Royce Parham who tallied 31 points for the Indians (13-3, 5-0). Tyler Freas finished with 21 points for Penn-Trafford (3-14, 0-5) with Brayden Stone contributing 12.

Yough 60 Greensburg Salem 40

Terek Crosby racked up 30 points for Yough in a 60-40 win against visiting Greensburg Salem in a non-section match up. Austin Matthews added 16 points for the Cougars (10-7, 5-2) who led 30-22 through two quarters. Ryan Burkart and Julian Stevens tallied 11 and 10 points respectively for the Golden Lions (4-12, 0-5).

Kiski Area 69 Knoch 38

Kiski Area exploded for 30 points in the second quarter and sunk Knoch 69-38 in a non-section contest. Isaiah Gonzalez put in 18 points for the Cavaliers (9-8, 3-2) with Dom Dininno and Lebryn Smith each ending with 10. Teagan Finucan scored 15 points for the Knights (5-11, 3-2).
