WPIAL sets girls volleyball playoff field

10 Westmoreland County teams will participate in the 2021 post-season

The WPIAL girls volleyball playoff field is set after the league released the brackets on Friday. A total of 10 Westmoreland County teams will participate in the 2021 post-season.

In Class 4A, Penn-Trafford was awarded the No. 6 seed and will welcome 11th-seeded Peters Township on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Greater Latrobe is seeded 10th and will play at No. 7 Bethel Park on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Also, Norwin secured the No. 12 seed and will match up against No. 5 Pine-Richland on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In the 3A bracket, returning WPIAL champion Franklin Regional received the sixth seed and will host No. 11 Montour on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It will be a rematch of last year's title game as the Panthers topped the Spartans in thrilling fashion, winning the fifth and final set 17-15. It was Franklin Regional's first ever district title in girls volleyball.

Elsewhere in 3A, Kiski Area will begin with a play-in game at Albert Gallatin on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The winner will meet No. 3 Hampton on Wednesday.

Four Westmoreland County teams will participate in the Class 2A field but each must get past the play-in game first.

Ligonier Valley battles Chartiers-Houston on Monday at 6 p.m. at Trinity High School. The winner gets top-seed North Catholic on Wednesday. Southmoreland and Ellwood City will play their play-in game at Mars on Monday at 6 p.m. with the victor traveling to No. 2 Avonworth on Wednesday. Valley and Carmichaels square off at Albert Gallatin on Monday at 6 p.m. with the winner heading to third-seeded Laurel on Wednesday. Finally, Derry Area will meet No. 13 Brentwood on Monday at 6 p.m. at Deer Lakes for the right to play No. 4 Neshannock on Wednesday at Plum.

Greensburg Central Catholic was awarded the third seed in the Class 1A tournament. The Centurions open the post-season on Tuesday against No. 14 South Side Beaver at Moon High School at 6 p.m.

All WPIAL championship games will be played at the UPMC Events Center at Robert Morris on November 6th.

Only the top two teams in Class 4A will advance to the PIAA tournament. Class 3A will take the top four teams while the top three teams will move on to states in Class 2A and 1A.
