Wildcats Yeboah sets rushing mark against Trojans

Greater Latrobe running back AJ Yeboah had a record-setting effort in leading the host Wildcats to a 38-14 triumph against Derry Area on Friday. Yeboah notched 15 carries for a Greater Latrobe record 264 yards, eclipsing the previous mark of 252 yards set by Robert Fulton in 2022. In the process, Yeboah scored a pair of touchdowns, while Dom Scarton threw for 153 yards and two scores for the Wildcats. Ty Wisniewski, Dante Durigon, and Eli Meeder also scored for GL. In the setback for the Trojans, Max Doherty rushed 18 times for 82 yards and two TDs, while Nate Stough caught three passes for 95 yards. The Wildcats improved to 40-21-1 all-time in their rivalry series against the Trojans.

Westmoreland baseball, softball teams shift classifications

The WPIAL released its alignment for the next two-year cycle for spring sports last week, and a handful of baseball and softball teams will be moving classifications. In baseball, three Westmoreland County teams are ascending from Class 3A to 4A, as Mount Pleasant Area, Yough, and Burrell will all make the move up, forming Section 3 along with Greensburg Salem, Valley, Indiana, and Highlands. Conversely, Derry Area is dropping from 4A to 3A, and will reside in Section 3 with Ligonier Valley, Southmoreland, Apollo-Ridge, Deer Lakes, and Freeport Area. Likewise in softball, Derry Area is dropping down to Class 3A, as the Trojans will play in Section 1 alongside Mount Pleasant Area, Southmoreland, Yough, Ligonier Valley, East Allegheny, and South Allegheny.

Gill, Hannan added to BVA football HOF

The Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame grew by two members last Friday, as Erik Gill and Devin Hannan were enshrined. Gill, Class of 2001, played tight end and linebacker for the Leopards, compiling a team-record 1,095 yards receiving for his career, twice garnering All-State accolades. He also played for the University of Pittsburgh. Hannah, Class of 2015, was an All-State lineman with BVA. He continued on the gridiron at three colleges – Kutztown University, Old Dominion University, and Valdosta State University.

GL great Pletcher tabbed as SHU assistant

Luke Pletcher, a state championship wrestler at Greater Latrobe, was added to the coaching staff at Seton Hill University last week. Pletcher will serve as an assistant to head coach Vince DeAugustine with the Griffins for the 2026-27 campaign. Previously, Pletcher was an assistant with the University of Pittsburgh. During his career on the mat, Pletcher went 166-5 with the Wildcats, winning three WPIAL and three PIAA titles. He then continued at Ohio State University, where he was a Big Ten Champion and a three-time All-American, finishing with a mark of 108-21. Last season, Seton Hill went 11-3 overall, including 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Bobcats WSOC second in preseason poll

With the season on the horizon, the University of Pitt-Greensburg women’s soccer team was ranked second in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Preseason Coaches’ rankings. The Bobcats trail only Penn State Behrend, which is the defending conference champion. A year ago, UPG went 9-9-3, including 6-1-1 in the AMCC, and fell to the Lions 7-0 in the conference title game. Moreover, UPG junior Dionna Santia was selected as one of the Preseason Co-Defensive Players of the Year.
