Greater Latrobe promotes Yarosik to lead boys basketball

After serving as an assistant for more than a decade, Ryan Yarosik will now be at the helm of Greater Latrobe boys basketball. Yarosik was promoted last week, following the resignation of longtime head coach Brad Wetzel earlier this offseason. Yarosik has previous experience as the head coach, as he guided the Penn-Trafford boys from 2008-2015. During his tenure with the Warriors, he compiled a mark of 71-86. A graduate of Norwin, Yarosik played collegiately at Slippery Rock University. Wetzel leaves behind an incredible legacy with the Wildcats, as he achieved a record of 310-226 over 24 seasons at his alma mater. Last season, the Wildcats went 10-13 overall, qualifying for the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs, where they fell to Thomas Jefferson in the first round.

Trojans baseball denied spot in state tourney

Playing with a spot in the PIAA postseason on the line, Derry Area baseball suffered a 3-0 loss against Hopewell Tuesday at Ross Memorial Park in Washington. In the Class 4A consolation game, the Trojans couldn’t solve Vikings hurler Kingston Krotec, who authored a shutout. Krotec limited the No. 13 Trojans to seven hits, while he also had a pair of hits and two RBIs for sixth-seeded Hopewell. In the defeat, Max Doherty was strong for the Trojans, as he also went the distance, allowing three runs on five hits, racking up eight strikeouts. Derry Area wrapped up the campaign with a record of 9-11.

Meanwhile, Latrobe smashed Saint Michael 16-5 in a nonconference matchup on Sunday. Other teams competing in D31 this season include Bushy Run, Homer City, Unity Township, and Plum.
