PT baseball sweeps Greater Latrobe
Section play began last week for numerous WPIAL baseball teams, and Penn-Trafford picked up the 2025 season where the Warriors left off the prior year. PT, which claimed the WPIAL Class 5A crown in 2024, swept the series against Greater Latrobe, winning 5-3 at home last Monday, and following up with a 9-6 road victory the next day. In the first tilt, the Warriors scored the first five runs of the contest, providing run support for winning pitcher Dom Delio, while Logan Matrisch registered a pair of hits and three RBIs. Luke Bulebosh scored twice for the Wildcats, while Jack Stynchula was saddled with the loss on the mound, going the distance. On Tuesday, PT overcame a 5-0 deficit, scoring nine times between the sixth and seventh innings. Zach Feldman earned the victory, working five innings in relief, permitting four hits and allowing two runs. Offensively, Matrisch, Feldman, Braden Kane, and Colton Tyburski each had two-hit efforts. In the defeat, Cooper Basciano smacked a three-run triple for the Wildcats.
GS softball continues surge
Greensburg Salem softball continued its outstanding start to the 2025 campaign last week, winning on the road against a pair of Westmoreland County foes. Last Tuesday, the Golden Lions ousted Yough 12-1, and they followed with a 4-2 triumph against Mount Pleasant two days later. In the five-inning win against the Cougars, Alle Scarpa tossed a one-hitter in the circle, registering seven strikeouts, while she went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple, and three RBIs at the plate. Hannah Olbeter and Cate Waugaman also posted three runs batted in apiece for GS. Against the Vikings, Scarpa racked up 15 strikeouts in a complete-game effort, permitting just three hits and no walks, and she homered once again. Meanwhile, Waugaman smacked a three-run blast and Olbeter added a pair of hits. Through four contests, all victories, the Golden Lions have outscored their foes by a margin of 26-3.
Westmoreland County wrestling trio leads WPIAL squad
Three Westmoreland County grapplers factored heavily into a victory for the WPIAL team at the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic on Saturday at Peters Township High School. Greater Latrobe’s Luke Willochell and Leo Joseph, and Mark Gray of Kiski Area all notched wins in helping the WPIAL defeat New Jersey 29-17. Joseph opened the event with a pinfall victory against Anthony Pellegrino at 121 pounds. Willochell notched a 12-9 sudden victory against Carson Walsh at 133 pounds, earning him the WPIAL’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. At 189, Gray scored a tech fall, courtesy of his 21-5 decision against Terrence Thomas. A fourth Westmoreland County wrestler, Burrell’s Isaac Lacinski, also competed, as he suffered a loss via tech fall against Jordan Chapman.
Wilson tabbed to lead Golden Lions girls soccer
Last week, Greensburg Salem hired Gary Wilson as the head coach for the girls soccer team. Wilson, who served as an assistant the past three years, replaces Jessica Melodia, who stepped down earlier this offseason after four seasons at the helm of the program. This past fall, the Golden Lions went 7-10 overall, including 3-9 in Class 3A Section 4, missing the playoffs.
Griffins MLAX wins another ranked clash
Seton Hill University men’s lacrosse extended its winning streak with another marquee victory on Saturday, as the Griffins bested host Lewis University 17-9. The fourth-ranked Griffins were deadlocked with the No. 8 Flyers at halftime, but SHU outscored Lewis 11-3 in the second half. Braeden Lockyer paced the Griffins with five points, including three goals, while Michael Coleman notched three goals and an assist. Riley Grudi, Carter Green, and Gavin Erickson also contributed multi-goal efforts for SHU, while Will Cody made 11 saves in net. Fueled by their seven-game surge, the Griffins are 9-1 overall on the season, including 4-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
