Derry Area football ousts Greensburg Salem
With Max Doherty scoring four times, Derry Area bested homestanding Greensburg Salem 43-28 at Offutt Field last Friday. Doherty notched 23 attempts spanning 125 yards, while Trojans signalcaller Anthony Sacco went 5-of-7 for 162 yards and a pair of scores. Karsen Weiers caught both of those TDs, as he totaled three catches for 142 yards. LeTrey Derry produced three scores for the Golden Lions - a pair of rushing scores and an 87-yard kickoff return - while Brody Chismar passed for 182 yards and a score and rushed for 57 yards. As a result of the victory, Derry Area moves to 4-4 overall, including 1-2 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Greensburg Salem, conversely, dips to 2-6 on the year, with an 0-3 mark in the Interstate. The Trojans host Mount Pleasant Area on Friday, while the Golden Lions remain at home to welcome Yough.
Ten Westmoreland boys soccer teams clinch
The WPIAL boys soccer section slate wraps up tomorrow, and the playoff field is nearly set. In Westmoreland County, 10 teams have punched their ticket to the postseason. In Class 4A, Norwin and Hempfield Area are in from Section 1. The Knights finished second with a mark of 7-1-2, while the Spartans placed fourth at 3-7-0. In Class 3A, Franklin Regional, Penn-Trafford, Greater Latrobe, and Belle Vernon Area all secured their spots. The Panthers currently pace Section 3 at 7-2-0, while the Warriors and Wildcats are each 6-3-0, and the Leopards are 5-4-0. In Class 2A, Mount Pleasant Area, Yough, and Southmoreland have notched playoff berths. The Vikings are deadlocked atop Section 4 at 12-1-0, while the Cougars are in third with a mark of 10-3-0, and the Scotties reside in fourth at 7-6-0. Lastly, Greensburg Central Catholic is in the postseason field in Class 1A. In Section 2, the Centurions finished in fourth place with a mark of 2-6-0. The playoff brackets will be unveiled on Wednesday.
Spartans edge Wildcats on the ice
Hempfield Area hockey opened its 2025-26 campaign in impressive fashion last Monday, as the Spartans skated past Greater Latrobe 4-2 at the Kirk Nevin Arena in Greensburg. Guerin Gardner opened the scoring for the Spartans with a first-period goal, and Johnny Holtzman extended the lead in the second period. Although Brogan Murphy pulled the Wildcats within one, Max Gromell tallied later in the second period to restore the two-goal lead for Hempfield Area. After Preston Miller scored for the Wildcats in the third, Andrew Bryant sealed the victory for the Spartans with a goal with four minutes remaining. Gardner paced the offense with a goal and two assists, while Evan Saltsgiver made 24 saves in net. The Spartans return to the ice on Thursday playing against Baldwin at the Ice Castle Arena in Castle Shannon, while the Wildcats play tonight against Norwin at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont.
Phillips powers SVC to gridiron win
Quarterback Jake Phillips had another massive performance in leading Saint Vincent College football to a 57-35 win at Bethany College Saturday. Phillips went 17-of-29 passing for 300 yards, with four touchdowns and three interceptions for the Bearcats. Chris Downs continued his prolific season, as well, hauling in eight receptions for 166 yards and three scores, while Keegan O’Brien caught four passes for 104 yards and a score, and Julian Walker added 140 yards rushing and two TDs. Defensively, Robbie Labuda registered 10 tackles and an interception for SVC. With the victory, the Bearcats improved to 2-4 overall, and 1-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). Saint Vincent returns home this Saturday to host Washington & Jefferson College.

This week on the Westmoreland Sports Network airwaves, a boys soccer section title will be determined on Tuesday, as Mount Pleasant Area hosts Charleroi at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings and Cougars are deadlocked atop Class 2A Section 4 with marks of 12-1-0, but Charleroi won the first matchup. On Friday, the high school football broadcast slate is headlined by Southmoreland hosting Elizabeth Forward in a heavyweight clash in the Class 3A Interstate Conference, while Derry Area hosts Mount Pleasant Area in the same conference. Elsewhere, Norwin aims to solidify its playoff standing in Class 6A, hosting Canon-McMillan. On Saturday, it’s Seton Hill University Homecoming with a football matchup against Gannon at 2 p.m.
