During his tenure as the athletic director at Belle Vernon Area, Matt Humbert oversaw numerous WPIAL and PIAA titles. Humbert was directly responsible for four of those championships, as he led the Leopards football program to back-to-back district and state crowns earlier this decade. This week, however, Humbert announced that he’s stepping away from BVA, as he will assume the AD role at Bethel Park in the fall.

“Looking back at my time at Belle Vernon, it’s filled with immense appreciation and gratitude,” said Humbert. “The people associated with the athletic department, the players, and the coaches have all elevated the athletic culture at BVA. I am proud to have been a part of that culture.”

Humbert, a former football star at Laurel Highlands who went on to play at California University of Pennsylvania, came to Belle Vernon Area in 2014 as the head coach for the Leopards football team. Two years later, he added AD to his duties, and he maintained both positions simultaneously until he stepped down as football coach after the 2024 campaign.

In 11 seasons leading the Leopards on the gridiron, Humbert went 96-25, including the golden seasons in 2022 and 2023.

His time as AD also spanned 11 years, and while the football program garnered the most headlines, several other programs thrived under his watch. The BVA softball program captured WPIAL gold in 2017, 2018, and 2023. Moreover, the boys basketball team completed a storybook season with a district title in 2025 and Leopards boys golf reigned supreme in 2023. Additionally, several Belle Vernon athletes won individual gold, including Elijah Brown in wrestling and Gabby Dusi and Max Henson in tennis.

With countless options to choose from, Humbert said he couldn’t put one memory above the rest during his time at BVA.

“From a coaching standpoint, the WPIAL championships, as well as state championships, will always have the upmost appreciation and stand out the most when I think back on it,” he revealed. “But then I also think of the little things like the trick-or-treat at the Weir and the kids in the community coming together during pregame; also, the excitement of the fans whenever we won the WPIAL (boys basketball) championship at the Pete stands out, as well.”

Belle Vernon Area Superintendent Timothy Glassport released a statement on Humbert’s resignation.

“Coach Humbert's accomplishments are well documented, but his greatest legacy is the impact he has had on our student-athletes. He has developed leaders, inspired and assisted student-athletes to pursue opportunities beyond high school, and strengthened the tradition of Leopard Pride.”

Humbert will remain at Belle Vernon Area through September and will begin at Bethel Park in October.
