Spartans lose crucial game to Blue Devils; Scotties falter in first-place clash; Mount Pleasant notches win against Derry Area

Mount Lebanon 42 Hempfield Area 20 (MTL 2-7; HEMP: 3-6) - WATCH BROADCAST

Mount Lebanon scored 35 unanswered points, as Hempfield Area suffered a crushing 42-20 home loss against the Blue Devils in Class 6A play. While the Blue Devils improved to 2-3 in Class 6A, the Spartans finished the conference ledger at 2-4. Patrick Smith rushed for 121 yards and two scores for the Blue Devils, and he added a pair of passing touchdowns. Dom Detruf went 14-of-26 for 186 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans, but he also threw two interceptions. Jack Kopas added five receptions for 76 yards and a score for Hempfield, while Owen Buchholz had a TD reception.

Woodland Hills 27 Franklin Regional 17 (WH: 7-2; FR: 6-3) - WATCH BROADCAST

Despite 208 yards rushing from Kyle Dupill, Franklin Regional could not slow down Woodland Hills in the second half, as the Wolverines prevailed 27-17. As a result, Woodland Hills claimed the Class 5A Big East Conference championship at 5-0, while the Panthers dipped to 3-2 but still qualified for the postseason. Scoop Smith notched three touchdowns for the Wolverines, including a pair of rushing scores.

Mount Pleasant Area 31 Derry Area 14 (MP: 5-4; DA: 3-6) - WATCH BROADCAST

Mount Pleasant Area scored 24 points in the opening quarter, notching a 31-14 home win against Derry Area in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. As a result, the Vikings moved to 3-1 in the conference ledger, while the Trojans dipped to 0-4. In the first quarter alone, Jarett Garn produced a 56-yard TD reception, a 4-yard touchdown run, and a 45-yard field goal. Cole Chatfield went 6-of-9 passing for 172 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half, for the Vikes, while Garrett Eicher added 55 yards rushing and a score. In the defeat, Anthony Sacco went 10-of-27 for 130 yards, with two TDs and two picks. Max Doherty rushed 18 times for 175 yards for the Trojans.

Elizabeth Forward 31 Southmoreland 3 (EF: 6-3; SM: 7-2) - WATCH BROADCAST

Homestanding Elizabeth Forward pulled away in the second half, claiming a 31-3 win against Southmoreland in a first-place showdown in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Thus, the Warriors moved to 4-0 in the conference, while the Scotties dipped to 3-1. Charlie Nigut rushed for 131 yards and three scores for the Warriors, while Ryan Messina passed for 186 yards. Southmoreland QB Anthony Smith hit on 7-of-18 throws for 68 yards with an interception, while Cam Phillips rushed for 80 yards.

Jeannette 42 Springdale 0 (JEAN: 6-3; SPR: 0-8) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Jeannette notched a dominant 42-0 win at home against Springdale in the Class 1A Eastern Conference. Kymon’e Brown went 3-for-5 passing for 88 yards and three scores through the air, and he added a punt return score, while Jayce Powell caught two passes for 66 yards and a pair of scores. Nick Mendoza paced the rushing attack for the Jayhawks, as he registered five carries for 115 yards and a TD. Hunter Shaeffer and Eli Jones also found paydirt for Jeannette, who moved to 3-3 in the conference, while the Dynamos tumbled to 0-6 in conference play.

Canon-McMillan 27 Norwin 26 (CM: 3-6; Nor: 2-7)

Tristyn Tavares returned to action and threw for 259 yards and two scores for Norwin, but the Knights came up just short in a 27-26 loss at Canon-McMillan in a Class 6A clash. Evan Morris led the Big Macs with 213 yards rushing and four TDs. In the setback, Jake Sincak scored twice and Gio Rothrauff compiled 162 yards on the ground. As a result, Norwin dipped to 0-5 in conference play, while Canon-McMillan ascended to 2-3.

Penn-Trafford 35 Armstrong 14 (PT: 7-2; ARM: 2-7)

Dom Smith produced three receptions for 172 yards and a touchdown in guiding Penn-Trafford to a 35-14 win at Armstrong in the Class 5A Big East Conference. With the win, the Warriors ascended to 4-1 in the conference, clinching a playoff berth, while the River Hawks fell to 0-5. Tasso Whipple added two rushing scores for PT, while QB Jaydon Oliver and receiver Kyan Kline connected on both TDs for Armstrong.

Greater Latrobe 28 Gateway 27 (GL: 5-4; GATE: 3-6)

John Wetzel tossed three touchdowns in leading Greater Latrobe to a massive 28-27 win at Gateway in the Class 5A Big East Conference. As a result, the Wildcats moved to 2-3 in conference play, while the Gators finished the conference slate at 2-4. Greater Latrobe, which overcame a 14-0 deficit after the opening quarter, received two touchdown catches from Andy Tatsch.

Belle Vernon Area 49 Ringgold 7 (BVA: 4-3; RING: 1-8)

Keyed by a perfect passing effort by Curty Wade, Belle Vernon Area rolled to a 49-7 win at Ringgold in Class 4A Big Six Conference action. As a result, the Leopards improved to 3-1 in the conference, while the Rams dropped to 0-4, including a loss in a cancelled game last week. Wade went 10-of-10 passing for 233 yards and three touchdowns, while Anthony Crews hauled in four passes for 118 yards and a pair of TDs. Kole Doppelheuer anchored the rushing attack with a dozen carries for 146 yards and a TD, and Zo Wade added two rushing scores.

Greensburg Salem 37 Yough 8 (GS: 6-3; YOU: 2-7)

Greensburg Salem forced four turnovers, including a defensive touchdown, and claimed a 37-8 road victory at Yough in a Class 3A Interstate Conference matchup. As a result, the Golden Lions improved to 2-2 in the conference, while the Cougars dropped to 0-4. Brody Chismar rushed for 97 yards and threw for 88 yards and a touchdown for GS. In the setback, Raidon Kuroda threw for 100 yards and a TD and rushed 18 times for 68 yards for the Cougars, while Aidan Shaffer caught four passes for 92 yards.

Imani Christian Academy 60 Burrell 6 (IC: 9-0; BUR: 2-7)

Burrell could not contain the prolific Imani Christian Academy offense, as the Saints cruised to a 60-6 win in Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference play. The loss dropped the Buccaneers to 2-3 in the conference, while the undefeated Saints moved to 5-0 in conference action. Gabe Jenkins amassed 189 yards rushing and three TDs for Imani, while QB Steve Vandiver threw a trio of touchdowns through the air. Trey Coury accounted for the lone score for the host Bucs.

Deer Lakes 44 Valley 13 (DL: 7-2; VAL: 0-9)

Steel Valley 53 Ligonier Valley 7 (SV: 6-3; LV: 3-6)

Donald Barksdale had an unbelievable performance in leading Steel Valley to a dominant 53-7 win against Ligonier Valley in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. Barksdale rushed five times for 314 yards and three scores for the Ironmen, while Da’Ron Barksdale added five carries for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Ironmen moved to 4-1 in the conference, while the Rams dipped to 1-4.

Kiski Area 15 Plum 14 (KA: 4-5; PLUM: 2-7)

A 31-yard field goal by Austin Beck with 18 seconds left springboarded host Kiski Area to a 15-14 win against Plum in a Class 5A nonconference tilt. Landon Kucic added a pair of TDs for the Cavaliers, while Aven Shirley caught six passes for 65 yards. Sloan Humphries notched four receptions for 127 yards and a score for the Mustangs. The Cavs scored their third win in a row.
