Spartans fend off Knights' rally; Mt. Pleasant surges in fourth quarter to down Greensburg Salem; Kiski Area upsets Greater Latrobe

Hempfield Area 34 Norwin 28 (HA: 3-4; NOR: 2-5) - WATCH BROADCAST

Hempfield Area jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, and fended off a late rally to edge Norwin 34-28 in Class 6A play. The host Spartans moved to 2-2 in the conference, while the Knights tumbled to 0-3. Dom Detruf completed 6-of-17 throws for 144 yards and a score, while he added 88 yards and another TD on the ground for the Spartans. Aidan Stinebiser amassed 91 yards rushing and a score, while Jack Kopas caught three passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Despite not starting the game, Norwin QB Tristyn Tavares connected on 11-of-31 throws for 125 yards and a score, and he added a TD run.

Mount Pleasant Area 28 Greensburg Salem 21 (MP: 4-3; GS: 4-3) - WATCH BROADCAST

Mount Pleasant Area scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, highlighted by a 90-yard kickoff return by Garrett Eicher, as the Vikings edged homestanding Greensburg Salem 28-21 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. Thus, the Vikings move to 2-0 in the conference, while the Golden Lions drop to 0-2. With the contest scoreless into the third quarter, GS struck first on a 21-yard TD pass from Brody Chismar to Keegan Young. The Vikings strung together the next two scores, a TD pass from Cole Chatfield to Eicher and a Brody Hutter run. Peyton Chismar connected with Dom Rosensteel on a pair of TDs, but Eicher’s kickoff return score gave the Vikings a lead they didn’t relinquish. Chatfield finished 9-of-14 for 156 yards and a score. Meanwhile, Rosensteel paced GS with seven receptions for 103 yards.

Greensburg Central Catholic 44 Jeannette 27 (GCC: 4-2; JEAN: 4-3) - WATCH BROADCAST

Samir Crosby had a monster performance, factoring into five touchdowns, as Greensburg Central Catholic bested Jeannette 44-27 in Class 1A Eastern Conference play. Crosby rushed 20 times for 150 yards and three scores on the ground, while he threw for 151 yards and two more TDs in guiding the host Centurions to a 3-1 mark in the conference. The Jayhawks, meanwhile, dipped to 1-3. In the setback, Jeannette’s Kymon’e Brown had a stellar effort of his own, as he compiled 17 carries for 209 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 114 yards and two scores through the air on 11-of-19 attempts. Jerry Davis notched a 65-yard kickoff return score for GCC, while Jayce Powell added 80 yards receiving for Jeannette.

Elizabeth Forward 56 Derry Area 14 (EF: 4-3; DA: 3-4) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Charlie Nigut was nearly unstoppable in leading Elizabeth Forward to a dominant 56-14 win at Derry Area in a Class 3A Interstate Conference matchup. Nigut rushed for 162 yards and three scores, while he added a touchdown reception for EF, which improved to 2-0 in the conference. Ryan Messina was also prolific for the Warriors, as he threw for 213 yards and three scores. The Trojans, who fell to 0-2 in the conference, received a pair of touchdowns from Max Doherty, who scored on a 6-yard run and an 11-yard reception from Anthony Sacco.

Franklin Regional 51 Fox Chapel Area 14 (FR: 6-1; FOX: 1-5) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Kyle Dupill continued his incredible season for Franklin Regional, as he rushed for 272 yards and four scores to lead the Panthers to a 51-14 win at Fox Chapel Area in a nonconference clash. Chase Lemke was also stellar for FR, as the signalcaller amassed 225 yards and three TDs through the air.

Kiski Area 36 Greater Latrobe 13 (KA: 2-5; GL: 4-3)

Keyed by a strong rushing attack led by Landon Kucic, Kiski Area knocked off host Greater Latrobe 36-13 in the Class 5A Big East Conference. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 1-3 in the conference ledger, while the Wildcats dipped to 1-3. Kucic rushed 36 times for 131 yards and three scores for the Cavs, while QB Carson Heinle went 7-of-9 passing for 137 yards and a pair of TDs, and he added 104 yards rushing. Additionally, Aven Shirley produced three receptions for 95 yards, including two touchdowns. John Wetzel factored into both scores for GL, as he notched a 63-yard TD run and a 63-yard connection with Andy Tatsch.

Penn-Trafford 32 Gateway 13 (PT: 5-2; GATE: 3-4)

Tasso Whipple produced another sterling stat line, as he rushed 28 times for 249 yards as Penn-Trafford prevailed at Gateway 32-13 in the Class 5A Big East Conference. With the win, the Warriors ascended to 2-1 in the conference, while the Gators dropped to 2-2. Jack Weishaar added two touchdown receptions from QB Jonny Lovre, who also scored on a rushing TD for PT.

Belle Vernon Area 68 Chartiers Valley 21 (BVA: 2-3; CV: 3-3)

Belle Vernon Area scored 33 points in the opening quarter en route to a lopsided 68-21 win against Chartiers Valley in Class 4A Big Six Conference play. As a result, each team has a record of 1-1 in the conference. Kole Doppelheuer registered 10 carries for 126 yards and two scores, while Deaubre Lightfoot had a touchdown reception and a 60-yard punt return score for BVA.

Southmoreland 53 Yough 34 (SM: 6-1; YOU: 2-5)

Southmoreland exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter to outlast Yough 53-34 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. The Scotties were led by Cam Phillips, who compiled 131 yards rushing and three scores, and Anthony Smith, who threw for 215 yards and three TDs. In the setback, Yough’s Raidon Kuroda registered 124 yards passing and two scores, while he ran for 120 yards and three scores. With the win, Southmoreland moved to 2-0 in the conference, while the Cougars dipped to 0-2.

Burrell 15 Valley 6 (BUR: 2-5; VAL: 0-7)

Trey Coury had a game for the ages for Burrell, as he rushed 53 times for 266 yards and two scores, leading the Buccaneers to a 15-6 win at Valley. Thus, the Buccaneers improved to 2-1 in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference, while the Vikings fell to 0-3 and remained winless overall. Payton Eason notched a kickoff return score for Valley.

Monessen 14 Chartiers-Houston 7 (MON: 6-1; CH: 3-4)

Ligonier Valley 20 Charleroi 14 (LV: 3-4; CHAR: 1-6)

A touchdown run by John Jablunovsky late in the fourth quarter broke a tie, giving Ligonier Valley a 20-14 win at Charleroi in a nonconference battle. Jablunovsky rushed 28 times for 184 yards and two scores for the Rams, while Bryce Vida added 104 yards and a score for LV.
