Wolfe, Scotties outlast Golden Lions

Keyed by 28 straight points, Southmoreland football outlasted host Greensburg Salem 42-34 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference opener on Friday. Dawson Wolfe registered 20 carries for 121 yards on the ground and three scores for the Scotties, and he also passed for 108 yards. Additionally, Dylan Brown compiled 130 yards and two TDs on the ground, while Brock Geho caught six passes for 80 yards. Brody Chismar had another robust performance in the setback for Greensburg Salem, as he hit 25-of-38 passes for 362 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for another touchdown. Brandt Sandstrom hauled in eight receptions spanning 133 yards and a score. With the win, the Scotties moved to 2-2 overall, and 1-0 in the conference. Southmoreland hosts undefeated Elizabeth Forward this week. The Golden Lions, meanwhile, remain winless at 0-4, and 0-1 in conference play. Greensburg Salem plays at Belle Vernon Area on Friday.

Greater Latrobe girls soccer edges FR

After suffering its first loss of the season, Greater Latrobe girls soccer rebounded impressively last week, claiming a crucial section win against Franklin Regional. Last Monday at Rossi Field, the host Wildcats edged the Panthers 1-0 in the Class 3A Section 4 showdown. Geli Dent tallied the lone goal in the 21st minute, assisted by Emerson Shine. Seraphia Cerreti notched the clean sheet for GL, making six saves. Two days later, GL rolled to an 8-0 victory at Indiana Area, as Shine netted three goals and dished out three assists, while Geli Dent had two goals and two helpers, and Paige Dent contributed a pair of goals, too. As a result, the Wildcats sit atop the section standings at 4-0-0, and they are 5-1-0 overall.

Vikings boys soccer finds groove

Mount Pleasant Area boys soccer has emerged as one of the top teams in Class 2A Section 5, as the Vikings won three matches last week. The Vikings opened their week with an 8-0 triumph at home against Ligonier Valley on Tuesday. In the victory, Tyke Snyder posted a hat trick, while Grayson Gardner earned the shutout in net. Two days later, Mount Pleasant notched a crucial 1-0 win at Yough. Snyder netted the lone goal in the 76th minute, assisted by Lukas Showman. In the loss for the Cougars, Russell Wieland made 12 saves. On Saturday, the Vikings ended their stellar week with a 7-0 home whitewash against Derry Area, as Tyler Barron had two goals and a helper, while Snyder tacked on two more markers.

SHU standout Frye added to WBB staff

Seton Hill University women’s basketball has added a recent star player to the staff. Last week, the University announced the hiring of Christiane Frye as an assistant coach under head coach Nick Volchok. During her career with the Griffins, Frye scored 1,517 points, and compiled 446 rebounds, 264 assists, and 207 steals. She was a four-time All-PSAC West selection, as well as the PSAC West Rookie of the Year. In Frye’s final season in a Griffins uniform in 2024-25, SHU went 24-7 overall, reaching the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinal.
