Realigment brings sweeping changes to local basketball teams

Several Westmoreland County squads will be on the move next winter

The WPIAL released its winter sports realignments from the next cycle, which will span the 2024-25 and 25-26 seasons. A myriad of Westmoreland County boys and girls basketball teams will be on the move, with the majority of squads moving up in classification.

In boys basketball, Hempfield Area and Norwin remain in Class 6A Section 2, along with Canon-McMillan, Mount Lebanon, and Upper St. Clair. While Baldwin leaves the section by dropping to 5A, Connellsville Area and Imani Christian move up, while Pittsburgh Central Catholic shifts over from Section 1.

In Class 5A, Franklin Regional, Greater Latrobe, and Penn-Trafford, along with Gateway and McKeesport Area, shift from Section 3 to Section 1, and will be joined by Albert Gallatin, Laurel Highlands, and Uniontown Area, all of which move up from Class 4A. Kiski Area, meanwhile, moves from Section 3 to Section 2.

Belle Vernon Area remains in Class 4A Section 3, and will be joined by Derry Area and Yough, which will elevate from Class 3A, as well as Greensburg Salem, shifting from Section 1. East Allegheny, Elizabeth Forward, and West Mifflin Area round out the section. Moreover, two teams moving up from 3A, Burrell and Valley, will compete in Section 1, along with Freeport Area, Highlands, Knoch, and North Catholic.

A trio of Westmoreland County teams will reside in Class 3A Section 4, as holdover Mount Pleasant Area will be joined by Ligonier Valley, which shifts from Section 3, and Southmoreland, which drops from 4A. The section will also include incumbents Brownsville Area, Charleroi, and Waynesburg Central.

In Class 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette, along with Clairton, Riverview, and Springdale, move from Section 3 to Section 1, while Bentworth and Frazier move from Section 4 and California Area bumps up from Class 1A.

Additionally, Monessen stays in Class 1A Section 1.

On the girls side, Norwin and Hempfield Area remain in Class 6A, although they will shift from Section 1 to Section 2, joined by holdovers Canon-McMillan, Mount Lebanon, and Upper St. Clair, as well as Connellsville Area, which elevates from 5A.

Five Westmoreland teams will play in 5A, including the quartet of Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Kiski Area, and Penn-Trafford in Section 2. The Cavaliers shift from Section 1, while the Wildcats and Warriors transition from Section 3. The Golden Lions, meanwhile, bump up from Class 4A. The rest of the section will consist of Indiana Area, McKeesport Area, and West Mifflin Area. Meanwhile, Franklin Regional remains in Section 1.

In Class 4A, Belle Vernon Area and Southmoreland remain in Section 3, and will be joined by Mount Pleasant Area and Yough, both of which move up from Class 3A. Elizabeth Forward, Laurel Highlands, Ringgold, and South Park round out the section. Additionally, Burrell, Derry Area, and Valley will reside in Section 1, with the Trojans and Vikings remaining status quo, while the Buccaneers elevate from Class 3A. Freeport Area, Highlands, North Catholic, and Knoch are also incumbents, while Oakland Catholic joins after previously playing in 5A.

Ligonier Valley is the lone Westmoreland County team left in Class 3A, as the Rams will play in Section 2 after playing in Section 3 last campaign.

In Class 2A, Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette will compete in Section 4, as the Centurions move from Section 3 while the Jayhawks ascend from Class 1A. Apollo-Ridge, Ellis School, Riverview, and Winchester Thurston will also reside in the section.

Lastly, Monessen will remain in Class 1A Section 2.
