Norwin’s Schuchert steps down
After 14 years at the helm of Norwin boys soccer, winning a WPIAL championship in the process, Scott Schuchert has stepped down as the Knights head coach. A Class of 2001 Norwin alum, Schuchert compiled a record of 177-70-18 during his time with the program. In the 2023 season, Norwin went 17-6-1 overall, defeating North Allegheny 2-1 via penalty kicks to claim the WPIAL Class 4A Championship. This fall, Norwin went 11-5-3, including 7-1-2 in Class 4A Section 1. The Knights fell to Plum in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals to conclude the season.
Gribble reaches scoring record for GCC
Erica Gribble solidified herself in Greensburg Central Catholic girls basketball history over the weekend, as the senior became the career leading scorer. In a 75-48 loss to South Fayette in the North Allegheny Tournament on Saturday, Gribble tallied 16 points, surpassing Ashley Henderson’s career mark of 1,725 that was set in 2007. Gribble and the Centurions bounced back on Sunday, as GCC bested Mount Lebanon 51-34. In that triumph, Gribble scored 19 points, while Jayla Peterson and Avery Jones added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
FR hockey earns shutout win
Franklin Regional hockey notched an impressive win last Monday, as the Panthers blanked South Fayette 5-0. Playing at the Palmer Imaging Arena in Delmont, the Panthers scored a goal apiece in the first and second periods, and sealed the outcome by scoring three times in the final frame. Grant Williams had a stellar performance, scoring a goal and adding three assists, while Ryan Crouse also dished out three helpers. Joey Casella, Brendan Yohe, JJ Tensuan, and Brian Compton also tallied goals, while Payson Neff made 17 saves to register the shutout. With the victory, the Panthers improved to 3-4-0-2, and with 11 points, they pulled into a tie with the Lions for seventh place.
Gesinski, Bauer make All-State list
A pair of Westmoreland County senior soccer stars proved to be among the best in the state this fall. Mount Pleasant Area’s Morgan Gesinski, and Annalyse Bauer of Greater Latrobe were honored as Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State performers last week. Gesinski netted 30 goals and dished out 11 assists this season for the Vikings, who advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2A bracket. Bauer, meanwhile, posted 20 goals and six assists for the Wildcats, who reached the playoffs in Class 4A.
Sidun tabbed as preseason All-American
Norwin junior wrestler Landon Sidun garnered another massive accolade in his decorated career last week, as he was selected as First-Team Nike Wrestling All-American at 120 pounds. The announcement came via FloWrestling last Monday. Sidun, a Penn State University pledge, has compiled a career mark of 72-2 with the Knights. Sidun was the only wrestler from the WPIAL to make the cut.
Griffins best Bobcats in men’s hoops
Seton Hill University men’s basketball won the battle of Greensburg last Tuesday, as the Griffins knocked off the University of Pitt-Greensburg 99-77. The host Griffins scored the first 10 points of the contest for the wire-to-wire victory. In leading SHU, Rashaad Williams and Dimitrios Sklavenitis each tallied 18 points, while Edir Ortiz posted 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Kedrick Curtis notched 14 points and 10 boards. Trent Rozich led the Bobcats with 19 points, while Jackson Byer snagged 15 rebounds. The win moved the Griffins to 5-0 at the time, although Seton Hill suffered its first setback at Glenville State on Saturday. The contest was considered an exhibition for UPG, though, as the Bobcats moved to 6-0 courtesy of their win at Geneva College on Saturday.
