WPIAL softball quarterfinal game recaps from Wednesday, May 12th 2025:

Norwin 2 North Allegheny 1 (6A)

An RBI double by Miley Harrison in the top of the ninth propelled No. 6 seed Norwin to a 2-1 upset victory against third-seeded North Allegheny in the Class 6A quarterfinals at Fox Chapel Area High School. Harrison’s decisive hit plated Graciana Castelli, who drew a walk earlier in the frame. Additionally, Maddy Kugler went 4-for-5 with an RBI for the Knights, while Abbie Telli earned the win in the circle, going the distance while allowing just four hits. In the defeat for the Tigers (13-8), McKenna Rowlands produced an RBI single, while Sammy Plotsko threw a complete game, permitting seven hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. As a result, the Knights (10-11) advance to face No. 2 seed Seneca Valley in the semifinals.

Penn-Trafford 14 Chartiers Valley 11 (5A) - LISTEN BROADCAST

With Guiliana “G” Youngo leading the way, top-seeded Penn-Trafford outslugged No. 9 Chartiers Valley 14-11 in the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals at West Mifflin Area High School. Youngo went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a pair of singles, producing six RBIs and three runs, and she also made a diving catch with the bases loaded to end the contest. The Warriors notched 11 hits in the victory, as Bella Rubbe went 2-for-3 with an RBI a walk, while Kylie Anthony went 1-2 with one run batted in and a pair of walks. In the defeat for the Colts, Annabelle Helt went 5-for-5 and Delaney O’Connor went 4-for-5 with a homer and a double, as the team amassed 17 hits. While the season ends for Chartiers Valley (12-8), the Warriors (19-2) will face fourth seed North Hills in the semifinals.

Elizabeth Forward 23 Derry Area 2 (4A)

With Haylee Myers unable to pitch, Derry Area was overwhelmed by top-seeded Elizabeth Forward 23-2 in three innings at Norwin High School. Myers earned the victory in the first round for the No. 8 Trojans, but with her out of the circle because of arm discomfort, the Warriors teed off in just two innings at the plate. EF (15-3) scored nine times in the bottom of the first, and tacked on 14 more runs in the second inning. Julia Resnik paced EF with a pair of hits and five runs batted in. Despite not pitching, Myers had a couple of RBIs for Derry Area. The Trojans end the campaign with a record of 11-7. Meanwhile, the Warriors will face either No. 4 West Mifflin Area or fifth-seeded Blackhawk.


WPIAL softball first round game recaps from Monday, May 12th 2025:

Penn-Trafford 5 Moon Area 3 (5A) - LISTEN BROADCAST

Top-seeded Penn-Trafford fought its way to a 5-3 victory over upset-minded Moon Area, the No. 16 seed, in a WPIAL 5A first round clash at West Mifflin. The Warriors fell behind early but tallied four runs in the second inning to go ahead 4-1. The Tigers answered back quickly, cutting it to 4-3. But P-T responded with a single run in the fourth and held on. Rilie Moors led the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Penn-Trafford (18-2). Lorryn Sepe drove in two runs while Bella Rubbe and Liz Welsh each recorded two hits. Allyson Paulone got the win in the circle allowing three runs, one earned, in seven innings. Macy Trost finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers (7-10). The Warriors advance to play No. 9 Chartiers Valley in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Fox Chapel 4 Franklin Regional 0 (5A)

12th seeded Fox Chapel only scored in one inning, plating four runs in the fourth, but it was enough as the Foxes upset No. 5 Franklin Regional 4-0 in a WPIAL 5A first round match up at North Allegheny. Jillian Haigh tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight batters in a complete game shutout for the Foxes (13-6). The Panthers end the season with a record of 13-7.

West Allegheny 8 Greater Latrobe 3 (5A)

Despite going out to a 2-0 lead early, No. 14 Greater Latrobe suffered an 8-3 loss at the hands of No. 3 West Allegheny in a WPIAL 5A first round battle at Plum. The Wildcats scored single runs in the first and second inning to hold the advantage but the Indians struck for four runs in the third and then added four more runs in the fifth inning. Maddie Munchinski recorded three hits plus drove in a run and scored once for the Wildcats (10-9). Mya McHugh and Julianna Bulebosh each added two hits. Ava Henke went 2-for-4, including a home run, and two RBIs for West Allegheny (14-4) which plays Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Derry Area 2 Greensburg Salem 1 (4A) - WATCH BROADCAST

Bailey Legge's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted No. 8 Derry Area to a 2-1 victory over No. 9 Greensburg Salem in a WPIAL 4A first round contest at Norwin. With one out in the seventh, Frankie DePalma ripped a triple to set the game-winning run just 60-feet away. After a strikeout, the Golden Lions elected to issue consecutive intentional walks to Sophia Doherty and Haylee Myers before Legge's single to center won the game. Myers, who battled through an arm issue late in the game, struck out 11 batters while yielding an unearned run on six hits to earn the win for the Trojans (11-5). DePalma, Legge and Callie Krause each collected two hits for DA. Hannah Olbeter notched a pair of hits for the Golden Lions (12-6). Derry Area will face top-seeded Elizabeth Forward on Wednesday at Norwin.

Beaver Area 8 Belle Vernon 1 (4A)

Belle Vernon couldn't muster much against Beaver Area pitcher Jaedyn Brown as the No. 11 Leopards fell to the No. 6 Bobcats 8-1 in a WPIAL 4A first round contest played at Pleasant Valley Elementary. Brown went the distance allowing just one earned run on five hits. Sami Springman reached base four times, including a double, and scored two runs for Beaver Area (15-5). Belle Vernon finishes its record with a 9-11 record. The Bobcats play No. 3 Knoch on Wednesday.
