With another week of high-school football on the horizon, the Week Two schedule provides more enticing local matchups, including five all-Westmoreland contests. Southmoreland already kicked off the ledger with a victory against Perry Traditional Academy of the Pittsburgh City League on Thursday night. Here’s a glimpse at the rest of the Westmoreland County action in Week Two.
Franklin Regional (1-1) at Hempfield Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Panthers: After a dominant performance against Plum to open the season, Franklin Regional fell 24-14 at Kiski Area last week. Turnovers proved costly for FR, as the Cavs returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Aside from those miscues, QB Connor Donnelly posted an impressive statline, completing 13-of-18 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown to Caden Smith, who led the receiving corps with seven grabs for 66 yards. Ayden Hudock provided the other touchdown for FR, courtesy of a 93-yard kickoff return. He’s the team leader with three scores in 2021. In addition to Donnelly, Roman Sarnic has taken snaps at QB, as he’s 5-of-9 passing for 63 yards on the season. Tyler Bewszka paces the rushing attack with 80 yards.
About the Spartans: Hempfield Area was overmatched in the first half against Penn-Trafford last week, falling into a 38-0 deficit at intermission. Although the mercy rule was already invoked, the Spartans showed some punch in the second half, as QB Jake Phillips and receiver Jayden Talbert hooked up for a pair of long scores. In total, Talbert compiled eight receptions for 129 yards, while Phillips amassed 159 yards on 13-of-28 passing. Ian Tuffs also contributed four receptions in the setback against the Warriors, and he and Talbert are tied for the team-lead with 10 catches on the season. After a breakout performance the prior week, running back Gino Caesar was limited to 55 yards on 17 rushing attempts.
About the Matchup: Hempfield Area competes in Class 6A, while FR is in the 5A Big East Conference. Despite their geographic proximity, the teams have not met since prior to the 2003 campaign.
Penn-Trafford (2-0) at Belle Vernon Area (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: For the second time in as many weeks, Penn-Trafford scored on its first offensive play against Hempfield Area, courtesy of a 65-yard run by Cade Yacamelli. The Wisconsin commit scored four times in the 45-14 win, as he notched 153 yards rushing and 54 yards receiving, the latter of which tied Liam Hileman for team-high honors. QB Carter Green connected on 8-of-14 throws for 159 yards and a score, while Ian Demeri compiled 78 yards on the ground. The Warriors carried a 38-0 lead into halftime, enacting the mercy rule for the entire second half. Through two games, the Warriors have outscored their foes 80-28.
About the Leopards: After opting for a second scrimmage, Belle Vernon Area opened its season with an impressive 49-14 win at Chartiers Valley. QB Devin Whitlock, who has garnered Division I offers, rushed for four scores and passed for another. He registered 132 yards on the ground on just six attempts, and he was 9-of-11 passing for 129 yards. Heralded sophomore Quinton Martin added six rushes for 78 yards, as well as a 94-yard kickoff return for a score. Evan Pohlot and Tanner Steeber each had multi-catch efforts for BVA.
About the Matchup: Penn-Trafford competes in the Class 5A Big East Conference, while the Leopards are in the 4A Big Eight Conference. The teams have not met since prior to the 2003 campaign.
Greensburg Salem (1-1) at Mount Pleasant Area (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Golden Lions: After letting a fourth-quarter lead slip away the prior week, Greensburg Salem used a big fourth quarter to defeat Connellsville Area 36-19 last week. Rashad Canady paced the attack for GS, as he rushed for 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Falcons. JC Wallish also contributed to the rushing game, as he produced a 5-yard score. QB Hayden Teska was 11-21 passing for 171 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Cody Rubrecht caught two passes for 70 yards, and for the season, he leads the WPIAL with 267 receiving yards. Donavin Waller also hauled in four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown last week.
About the Vikings: Mount Pleasant Area claimed its second dominant win in as many weeks, as the Vikings overwhelmed Derry Area 63-14. The Vikings scored 57 of those points in the first half, including three scores by Aaron Alakson, who racked up 60 yards on just seven carries. Fellow running back Robbie Labuda scored twice, offensively on a 13-yard scamper, and defensively on a 20-yard interception return. QB Tyler Reese completed 4-of-6 passes for 100 yards and two scores, while he also rushed for 59 yards and another touchdown. Through two contests, Mount Pleasant Area has outscored its foes 103-21.
About the Matchup: Greensburg Salem is a member of the Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference, while Mount Pleasant Area is in the 3A Interstate Conference. About the Trojans: Derry Area was on the wrong end of a 63-14 outcome at home against Mount Pleasant Area last week. Ahmad Ward and Eric Catone accounted for the scores, on runs of 14 and 11 yards, respectively. Catone paced the Trojans with just 33 yards on the ground, while QBs Blake Revoir and Mason Beeman combined to pass for just 23 yards. The main target in the passing game was freshman Damari Robinson, who had five catches for 15 yards. Through two weeks, the Trojans have allowed 124 points, the second most in the entire district.
About the Little Indians: Indiana Area rolled against Burrell last week, prevailing 44-7. QB Devin Flint was dynamic as a runner, as he compiled 178 yards rushing and a score, while Zach Herrington added 115 yards and another touchdown on the ground. Korbin Wilson also was productive as a rusher, as he registered 86 yards and three scores against the Bucs. Indiana Area has attempted just four passes this year, all of which have been completed.
About the Matchup: Derry Area plays in the Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference, while Indiana Area is in the 4A Greater Allegheny Conference. The prior meeting between the Trojans and Little Indians took place in 2013, a 56-6 Indiana win when the teams were conference foes.
Norwin (1-1) at Connellsville Area (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Knights: Norwin edged Greater Latrobe 31-28 last week, with Joey Castle providing the winning 21-yard field goal in the final seconds. QB Luke Levondosky proved to be a dual-threat, as he passed for 142 yards and a touchdown, and he added 101 yards rushing and two scores. Jackson Pons was the top receiver, as he snagged four passes for 50 yards. Before Castle’s heroics, Christian Beck provided the tying score on a 2-yard run with just more than two minutes remaining. For the season, Levondosky leads the rushing attack, with 181 yards, while Dom Barca has compiled 83 yards on 18 attempts.
About the Falcons: Connellsville Area came up short against Greensburg Salem 36-19 last week. In the setback, QB Anthony Piasecki completed 13-of-25 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown, and he rushed for another score. Meanwhile, reserve QB Grayden Gillot threw a 26-yard score to Ethan Shultz to cap the scoring in the game. Five different players have accounted for the Falcons’ five touchdowns in 2021. Bill Maczko is the first-year head coach at Connellsville Area.
About the Matchup: The last meeting between the schools took place in 2015 as members of the Foothills Conference, with Norwin prevailing 52-35.
Jeannette (0-2) at Ligonier Valley (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette suffered the worst loss in program history last week, an 82-0 home beating to Sto-Rox, including 62-0 at halftime. Michael Mason received the bulk of the carries for Jeannette, but finished the game with a negative rushing total, as did Payton Molter. In total, the Jayhawks posted -11 yards of offense. Jeannette has yet to score in two contests, while allowing 122 points.
About the Rams: Ligonier Valley scored an eye-opening win against Elizabeth Forward 26-14 last week. The Rams wasted no time in taking the lead, as Grant Dowden found paydirt on a 68-yard pass from Haden Sierocky on the first offensive play. Sierocky finished 6-of-12 for 184 yards and two scores for the Rams, while he also paced the rushing attack with 62 yards and a couple of touchdowns. For the season, Sierocky has thrown for 284 yards and rushed for 113. Against the Warriors, Nick Beitel tied Dowden for the team-high in receiving yards, as he caught two passes for 68 yards, while defensive lineman Jacob Hay recorded four sacks.
About the Matchup: Jeannette competes in the Class 1A Eastern Conference, while LV resides in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. After playing twice on the road, the Rams will play at home for the first time in 2021 at Weller Field.
Kiski Area (2-0) at Greater Latrobe (1-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area proved opportunistic against Franklin Regional last week, scoring twice on interception returns to claim a 24-14 victory. The first pick-six came courtesy of Eddie Coleman from 16 yards, while Brayden Dunmire sealed the outcome with a 70-yard return. Running back Brock Wilkins accounted for the only offensive touchdown for the Cavs, on a 1-yard run, while Cody Dykes booted a 26-yard field goal. KA previously defeated Butler Area 21-7 to open the campaign.
About the Wildcats: Greater Latrobe sustained a 31-28 loss to Norwin on a field goal in the final seconds. The Wildcats held a lead with four minutes left in the fourth, as Drake Clayton scored on an 85-yard run to put GL ahead 28-21. Clayton produced 211 yards on 16 carries, while receiver Kyle Brewer scored three times – on an 11-yard reception and on runs of 9 and 14 yards. GL quarterback Bobby Fetter was 4-of-6 passing for 75 yards and a score before he left with injury in the second quarter. Fetter’s status for this week is uncertain, but Brayden Reott will start if Fetter cannot play.
About the Matchup: While both teams reside in Class 5A, the Cavs play in the Northeast Conference, while the Wildcats are in the Big East. The previous meeting between GL and KA took place in 2017 as conference opponents, as the Wildcats prevailed 37-21.
Trinity (0-2) at Yough (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Hillers: Trinity lost a shootout to West Allegheny last week, 43-34. Despite the defeat, the Hillers’ passing attack was potent, as QB Connor Roberts threw for 353 yards, most in the district for the week, as well as four touchdowns. His favorite target was Andrew Durig, who recorded seven catches for 158 yards and three scores. Landon Hendrix and Brandon May also found the end zone for the Hillers. Trinity has allowed 91 points through the first two games, the most in all of Class 4A. Jon Miller guides the program.
About the Cougars: For the second straight week, Yough fell 40-0, this time to Ringgold. The Cougars had no answer for the Rams’ rushing attack, which totaled 368 yards. Conversely, Yough compiled just 34 yards of offense. Quarterback Gavin Roebuck was 8-of-19 passing for 49 yards. The Cougars are one of just three teams that has yet to score through two contests.
About the Matchup: The teams last met in 2015, as members of the Big 10 Conference. In that tilt, Trinity rolled 6
Burrell (0-2) at Highlands (2-0) – 7 p.m.
About the Buccaneers: Burrell was overmatched by Indiana Area last week, 44-7. The score was comparable to the Bucs’ Week Zero matchup against Mount Pleasant Area, which was 40-7. Caden DiCaprio once again provided the lone Burrell TD, a 37-yard run in the fourth quarter. He finished with 93 yards on 11 attempts. Two different QBs, Chase Fenner and Justin Ulizio, each threw an interception against the Little Indians.
About the Golden Rams: Highlands bested Valley 41-6 last week. Golden Rams quarterback Chandler Thimons completed three passes – all of which went for touchdowns – for 121 yards, while also rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown. Luke Bombalski compiled 134 yards rushing and a score, and he’s amassed 267 yards on the ground and five scores through two games. Head coach Domenick Girardi leads the Golden Rams.
About the Matchup: The teams last met in 2015 as conference opponents, a 7-3 Highlands triumph.
Valley (0-2) at Shady Side Academy (1-1) – 7 p.m.
About the Vikings: Valley fell to Highlands 41-6 last week, the second straight week the Vikings permitted 41 points. Valley did score its first touchdown of the campaign, courtesy of a 62-yard run by Jeramiah Johnson.
About the Bulldogs: After cruising past Riverview to open the season, Shady Side Academy fell to Springdale 40-12 last week. Isaiah Grier hauled in a 14-yard touchdown in the loss, his fifth of the season. Eddie DeBruce accounted for the other score, a 1-yard run. Chuck DiNardo is the head coach of SSA.
Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1) at Apollo Ridge (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Centurions: Greensburg Central Catholic claimed a 17-7 win against Seton-LaSalle. Nate Dlugos played the vast majority of snaps at QB, and he connected on 15-of-23 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. His top targets were Joe Blahovec, who had three grabs for 68 yards and a touchdown, and Amari Mack, who made five catches for 63 yards. Jaydin Canady paced the ground game, rushing six times for 97 yards, while Taishaun Jamison had a rushing touchdown. Blahovec led the way defensively, with eight tackles against the Rebels, while Mack snagged an interception. Ryan Reitler booted a field goal.
About the Vikings: Apollo-Ridge was on the wrong end of a 46-0 trouncing to Avonworth last week. In the shutout, Nick Curci was a bright spot for AR, as he led the team with 33 yards rushing, and caught four passes. For the season, QB Karter Schrock is 11-of-16 passing for 146 yards, and is the rushing leader, with 112 yards. John Skiba guides the Vikings.

Charleroi (0-1) at Monessen (0-2) – 7 p.m.
About the Cougars: After not playing in Week Zero, Charleroi lost to Carmichaels 42-7 last week. Nikko Pelligrini accounted for the only TD for the Cougars. QB Brendan Harps threw for 119 yards, while Terrence Woods caught five passes for 69 yards. Brady Barbero is the head coach for Charleroi.
About the Greyhounds: Monessen lost a low-scoring affair to Imani Christian last week, 12-8. Monessen has scored just 15 points through the first two games.
