Westmoreland County High School Football Week Two Preview

Norwin welcomes Greater Latrobe; PT hosts Moon in championship rematch; Belle Vernon battles Central Valley

Two games into the high school football season for most teams to this point, the Westmoreland County squads have fared extremely well. Thus far, eight teams in the county have won twice, while another six have captured a single victory. At least one of those perfect records will end this week, as Greater Latrobe at Norwin highlights the five all-Westmoreland matchups. Here’s a detailed examination of all of the area games in Week Two.

Greater Latrobe (2-0) at Norwin (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Wildcats: With Alex Tatsch leading the way, homestanding Greater Latrobe bested Plum 32-18 one week ago. Tatsch rushed 11 times for 158 yards and two scores on the ground. His brother, Andy Tatsch, also found the end zone, scoring on a 25-yard reception from John Wetzel. Wetzel passed for 63 yards, and he compiled 111 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. On the season, Alex Tatsch paces GL with 227 yards rushing, while Wetzel has completed 11-of-22 passes for 172 yards, with one score and three interceptions. Through two contests, the Wildcats are averaging 36.5 points.

About the Knights: Norwin rallied in the second half to claim victory for the second week in a row, as the Knights bested host Kiski Area 33-21 last Friday. The Knights scored five rushing TDs, including a pair by QB Tristyn Tavares, who also threw for 125 yards on 14-of-22 attempts. Gio Rothrauff, Jake Sincak, and Jackson Huss also found pay dirt for Norwin. For the year, Tavares has connected on 27-of-50 passes for 316 yards and a score, and he’s added 105 yards and two TDs on the ground. Jake Knight paces Norwin in receiving yards, with 111, while Jake Sincak has a team-best five receptions, and he also leads the Knights with 158 yards on the ground.

About the Matchup: The lone battle of undefeated Westmoreland County teams pits Norwin, which plays in Class 6A, against Greater Latrobe, which resides in the Class 5A Big East Conference. The previous meeting took place in 2021, as the Knights narrowly prevailed, 31-28.

Moon Area (1-0) at Penn-Trafford (1-1) – 7:30 p.m.

About the Tigers: Moon Area’s game last week against Montour was suspended due to inclement weather. In Week Zero, the Tigers blanked Trinity 21-0. In that win, Andrew Cross completed 3-of-8 passes for 82 yards, with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. Paul Bronough and Nazir Brookins anchored the rushing attack, compiling 49 and 44 yards, respectively, while Bronough also scored and added a 24-yard reception. Moon is under the guidance of coach Ryan Linn.

About the Warriors: Tasso Whipple had another big game on the ground, while the passing attack got untracked in Penn-Trafford’s 28-7 home win against Mount Lebanon last week. Whipple posted 22 carries for 136 yards and a score for the Warriors. PT quarterback Jonny Lovre hit on 17-of-26 throws for 217 yards and a touchdown, while Jack Weishaar snagged 10 passes for 130 yards. For the year, Whipple has rushed for 310 yards and scored a team-best three TDs, while Lovre is 27-of-45 for 334 yards, with a score and an interception. Jamison Yurt leads the PT defense with 15 tackles and a forced fumble.

About the Matchup: It’s a showdown of Class 5A powers, as the Tigers play in the Allegheny Six Conference, while the Warriors are in the Big East Conference. The previous clash took place in the WPIAL Class 5A Championship game at Heinz Field in 2021, as the Warriors claimed gold with a 24-21 victory.

Deer Lakes (2-0) at Derry Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Lancers: Deer Lakes notched an impressive 35-22 win at South Park last week. Zier Williams was an offensive catalyst for the Lancers, as he rushed 26 times for 118 yards and three TDs. Quarterback Jake Fleisher completed 11-of-17 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, while adding 81 yards and a score on the ground. Through two contests, DL has outscored its adversaries 63-29. Head coach Tim Burk remains on the sidelines for the Lancers.

About the Trojans: Damauri Robinson scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to propel Derry Area to a 21-7 home win against Freeport Area one week ago. In his performance, Robinson notched 19 carries for 151 yards. Additionally, Max Doperak hauled in a 33-yard TD pass from Anthony Sacco for the Trojans. Sacco finished 3-of-7 for 72 yards. The Trojans have played in low-scoring affairs thus far, as they hold a 28-27 points margin advantage through two weeks.

About the Matchup: Both teams play in Class 3A, as the Lancers call the Allegheny Seven Conference home, while the Trojans compete in the Interstate Conference. The teams last met in 2021, as Deer Lakes rolled to a 49-0 whitewash.

Franklin Regional (2-0) at Upper St. Clair (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the FR Panthers: The combination of Kyle Dupill and opportunistic defense and special teams sparked Franklin Regional in a 49-26 road win against Hempfield Area last week. Dupill notched 107 yards rushing and three scores on the ground, while the Panthers’ defense created four turnovers, including a pick-six, and the special teams yielded a kickoff return score. Jaymier Austin produced the 82-yard kickoff return, while Darwin Jones notched the interception return score for FR. Through two contests, QB Chase Lemke is 17-of-34 for 319 yards, with five TDs and two interceptions. Dupill, meanwhile, has amassed 286 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. Averaging 45.5 points per game, the Panthers rank second in Class 5A in scoring offense.

About the USC Panthers: Upper St. Clair rolled to a 41-6 win at Canon-McMillan last week. Quarterback Julian Dahlem was limited to just nine yards through the air, but he rushed 14 times for 174 yards and three TDs. Dante Coury was also effective on the ground, as he registered 87 yards and a score. Through two contests, Dahlem has rushed for 208 yards and a team-best four scores, while Coury has 165 yards on the ground and three TDs. Dahlem and Ethan Hellmann have each gone 5-of-10 passing. The Panthers have outscored their foes by an average of 41.5-14. Mike Junko is at the helm of USC.

About the Matchup: This game is a clash of Class 5A squads, as USC plays in the Allegheny Six Conference, while FR is in the Big East Conference. The last meeting took place in the 2017 WPIAL Class 5A postseason, as Upper St. Clair edged Franklin Regional 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Hempfield Area (0-2) at Kiski Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Spartans: Hempfield Area couldn’t slow down Franklin Regional in a 49-26 home loss last week. The Spartans were led by returning QB Dom Detruf, who went 19-of-37 for 309 yards, with three TDs and a pair of interceptions. Aidan Stinebiser had three receptions for 45 yards and two TDs for the Spartans, while Nick Marquis recorded two catches for a team-best 70 yards receiving and a score. For the year, Stinebiser has rushed a dozen times for 64 yards, while Rogan Katchur has added 14 carries for 60 yards. Owen Bucholz paces the Spartans in receptions, with five. With a dozen tackles and a forced fumble, Aidan Allison leads the Hempfield Area defense. The Spartans have been outpaced 71-26 through two contests.

About the Cavaliers: Kiski Area couldn’t hold a second-half lead, as the Cavaliers fell at home 33-21 against Norwin last Friday. In the defeat, the Cavs received a big game from signalcaller Carson Heinle, who amassed 236 yards and two scores through the air, with both scores going to Aven Shirley. Shirley caught six passes for 128 yards, while running back Landon Kucic posted 44 yards and a TD on the ground. For the year, Heinle has hit on 20-of-28 attempts for 328 yards and a pair of scores, while Kucic has compiled 227 yards rushing and five scores. Shirley, meanwhile, has registered 13 catches for 222 yards and three TDs.

About the Matchup: While Hempfield Area resides in Class 6A, Kiski Area plays in the Class 5A Big East Conference. The last matchup between the teams took place in 2015 as Quad-A Foothills Conference foes, as the Cavs reigned supreme 35-20.

Central Valley (0-2) at Belle Vernon Area (0-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Warriors: Central Valley dropped its second game in a row last week, falling to Thomas Jefferson 27-13. The host Warriors were led by Jance Henry, who rushed 14 times for 120 yards and accounted for both touchdowns. QB Steven Rutherford completed 8-of-13 passes for 72 yards. To this point, Henry, who has garnered major Division I interest, has amassed 236 yards rushing on 36 carries, and has scored all four touchdowns for CV. Kole Hiltz is the top receiver for the Warriors, with four catches for 57 yards. Mark Lyons is at the helm of Central Valley.

About the Leopards: Lightning delays prompted the postponement of the highly-anticipated matchup of defending state champions last week. Host Aliquippa held a 12-0 edge against Belle Vernon Area with 1:49 left in the opening quarter when action was halted for good. The teams still have the option to make up the game later. A year ago, the Leopards reigned supreme in Class 3A, winning the WPIAL and PIAA titles and going 13-1. The Leps return several key components, including Kole Doppelheuer and Anthony Crews. In 2023, Doppelheuer amassed 832 yards on the ground and scored 14 TDs, while Crews caught 26 passes for 389 yards, rushed for 410 yards, and found the end zone 11 times. Curty Wade takes over at QB, while his older brother, Zo Wade, will be a valuable asset in the passing attack.

About the Matchup: The teams switched classifications from last year, as the Leopards moved up from Class 3A to 4A in the Big Six Conference, while the Warriors dropped down to 3A in the Western Hills Conference. The teams last played in the WPIAL AAA playoffs in 2013, a 40-7 Central Valley triumph.

Burrell (0-2) at Mount Pleasant Area (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Buccaneers: Burrell had no answer for the duo of Darrin Haynes and Cam Mallory, as the Buccaneers fell at home to Shady Side Academy 42-7 last Friday. Burrell was led by Trey Coury, who posted 25 carries for 100 yards and the lone touchdown. Also, Rocco Gianetti had 70 yards rushing for the Buccaneers. On the campaign, Coury has produced 46 carries for 209 yards, while quarterback Stevie Hasson is 6-of-13 for 76 yards and a score, while also rushing for 47 yards. Through two games, Burrell is averaging just 7 points per game and allowing 33 points. Head coach Shawn Liotta returns to the sidelines after serving a two-game suspension.

About the Vikings: A two-point conversion in double overtime gave Mount Pleasant Area a thrilling 36-35 victory at Greensburg Central Catholic last week. On the decisive play, Stephen Predajna found the end zone on the conversion run, shortly after he hauled in a TD pass from Cole Chatfield. Predajna rushed 15 times for 87 yards and a score in the win, while Brody Hutter registered 14 carries for 93 yards and a pair of scores. On the season, Hutter leads MPA with 186 yards rushing, while Jarrett Garn has compiled 115 yards on the ground, and Predajna and Garrett Eicher have amassed 99 and 97 yards rushing, respectively. Chatfield has completed 13-of-20 throws for 165 yards, with one score and two picks. The Vikings have played in a pair of one-point games.

About the Matchup: Both teams play in Class 3A, with the Buccaneers residing in the Allegheny Seven Conference, while the Vikings call the Interstate Conference home. Most recently, the teams met twice in the 2021 season, with Mount Pleasant prevailing 40-7 in the season opener, and following with a 41-7 triumph in the WPIAL Class 3A first round.

Valley (0-2) at Greensburg Salem (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Vikings: Valley sustained a narrow 38-36 setback last week at home against Riverview. Nicholas Heakins had a monster performance in the loss, as he rushed nine times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and he added a 99-yard kickoff return score. Moreover, Zayaan Farron snagged six receptions for 139 yards and two TDs, both of which came courtesy of Mason Simmons. Through two weeks, the Vikings have permitted an average of 41.5 points.

About the Golden Lions: Keyed by forcing five turnovers, homestanding Greensburg Salem overmatched Ligonier Valley 43-14 one week ago. Kai Brunot anchored the rushing attack for GS, as he amassed 142 yards and a score on a dozen carries. Keegan Young and Brady Smith also rushed for scores for the Golden Lions, while Peyton Chismar tossed TD passes to Dom Rosensteel and Max Topper. To this point, Brunot has registered 29 carries for 199 yards and two scores on the ground, while Brady Smith has added 96 yards rushing. Peyton Chismar has hit on 7-of-19 passes for 137 yards, with one score and no interceptions, and he’s added another TD on the ground. The GS defense has limited opponents to an average of 10 points per tilt.

About the Matchup: The Class 3A matchup pits Valley, from the Allegheny Seven Conference, against Greensburg Salem, which is in the Interstate Conference. The teams have not played since prior to 2003.

Southmoreland (2-0) at Laurel Highlands (1-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Scotties: Southmoreland freshman signalcaller Anthony Smith continued to play beyond his years last week, as he guided the Scotties to a 49-14 triumph at home against East Allegheny. Smith threw for 189 yards and three scores, including a pair of strikes to Elliot Premus, who snagged six passes for 127 yards. Two weeks into the season, Smith has hit on 18-of-36 passes for 317 yards, with five TDs and three interceptions. Premus has hauled in nine catches for 174 yards and a team-high four touchdowns, while Ethan Shawley anchors the rushing game with 134 yards on 17 attempts. Kicker Jake Kaylor has already hit a 50-yard field goal and converted 10 extra points. Southmoreland is outpacing its opponents by an average margin of 47-17.

About the Mustangs: After winning 45-20 at home against Uniontown Area in Week Zero, Laurel Highlands had its game at Ambridge Area postponed last week due to inclement weather. In their first contest, the Mustangs were led by quarterback Noah Lion, who completed 3-of-6 passes for 88 yards, with two TDs and an interception, and he also rushed 10 times for 98 yards. Antawn Black, a Division I prospect, was on the receiving end of both of those passing touchdowns, as he posted three receptions for 88 yards. Parker Hoff added 72 yards rushing and a TD. Coach Rich Kolesar is at the helm of Laurel Highlands.

About the Matchup: While Laurel Highlands plays in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, Southmoreland makes its home in the Class 3A Interstate Conference. The last matchup between the schools occurred in 2021, as the Mustangs edged the Scotties 28-21.

Ringgold (0-2) at Yough (2-0) – 7 p.m.

About the Rams: Ringgold suffered a heartbreaking 14-13 loss in overtime at Indiana Area last week. In the defeat, Rams QB Szyair Dungee completed 11-of-16 passes for 197 yards and a TD, and he added another score on the ground. His favorite target was Demetri Lowe, who had six catches for 104 yards. Ringgold has not won a game since Sept. 24, 2021. Coach Robert Heller is in his first season guiding the Rams.

About the Cougars: Yough moved to 2-0 for the first time in more than a decade, courtesy of the Cougars 21-9 win at Charleroi last Friday. Quarterback Raidon Kuroda threw for 89 yards, and he added 24 carries for 176 yards and two scores on the ground. Aidan Shaffer made four catches for 70 yards, while Aidan Thornton registered 69 yards rushing and a touchdown for Yough. For the season, Kuroda has rushed 42 times for 281 yards and four TDs, while he’s completed 15-of-27 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns, with one pick. Shaffer is the top receiver, snagging seven receptions for 187 yards, while Thornton has compiled two TDs. The Cougars have permitted just nine points total through two games.

About the Matchup: Ringgold plays in the Class 4A Big Six Conference, while Yough is in the 3A Interstate Conference. The Rams are playing their first of three straight Westmorland County foes. The teams most recently played in 2021, as the Rams rolled to a 40-0 whitewash.

Jeannette (2-0) at Ligonier Valley (1-1) – 7 p.m.

About the Jayhawks: Jeannette showed its offensive firepower in a 42-28 home win against Apollo-Ridge last week. Jayce Powell posted a pair of TD receptions spanning 82 yards, and he notched a 60-yard punt return score. Kymon’e Brown was also stellar, as he tossed three touchdowns on 5-of-9 passing for 94 yards, and scored twice on the ground, rushing six times for 114 yards. Eli Jones also had a big night on the ground, registering seven carries for 117 yards. Jeannette has averaged 35 points per game.

About the Rams: Ligonier Valley sustained a 43-14 loss to host Greensburg Salem last week. In the setback, John Jablunovsky rushed 12 times for 120 yards for LV, while Bowie Schreyer completed 9-of-18 passes for 165 yards and a score, but he threw four picks. His favorite receiver was Mark Jablunovsky, who made three catches for 86 yards and a touchdown. Two games into the campaign, John Jablunovsky has registered 34 carries for 248 yards, while Mark Jablunovsky has compiled four catches for 109 yards.

About the Matchup: Jeannette plays in the Class 1A Interstate Conference, while Ligonier Valley is in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. In 2021, the Rams dominated 55-0.

Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1) at Apollo-Ridge (0-2) – 7 p.m.

About the Centurions: Greensburg Central Catholic endured a heartbreaking 36-35 double-overtime loss to Mount Pleasant Area a week ago. On the decisive play, Mount Pleasant’s Stephen Predajna found the end zone on the conversion run. In the setback, Samir Crosby enjoyed another prolific game for GCC, as he hit on 13-of-30 passes for 219 yards, with two TDs and an interception, and he rushed 19 times for 131 yards and three TDs. Landon Honick was prolific as a pass catcher, as he made seven grabs for 136 yards and a TD. On the year, Crosby has rushed 44 times for a WPIAL-leading 412 yards, scoring seven times, and he’s completed 20-of-40 passes for 367 yards, with four TDs and one pick. GCC’s average scoring margin is 40-38.

About the Vikings: Apollo-Ridge tasted defeat 42-28 at Jeannette last week. In the loss, Vikings quarterback Alexander Clawson connected on 20-of-33 passes for 240 yards and three TDs, and he added 51 yards on the ground. Tristan Zalenski was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes, as he made five grabs for 54 yards. Corey Mackintosh paced the rushing attack, as he produced a dozen carries for 109 yards. For the year, Clawson has thrown for 394 yards and four scores, while Jaden McCray is the top receiver with nine catches for 116 yards. John Skiba is the veteran coach of Apollo-Ridge.

About the Matchup: GCC plays in the Class 1A Interstate Conference, while AR is in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference. In 2021, the Centurions secured a 33-7 win.

Monessen (2-0) at Beth-Center (0-1) – 7 p.m.
