PIAA girls basketball semifinal recaps from Monday, March 18th 2024:
Kennedy Catholic 61 Greensburg Central Catholic 45 (2A)
For the second year in a row, the Centurions’ season ended at the hands of Kennedy Catholic in the state semifinals. Led by Layke Fields, who scored 26 points and dominated on the boards, the Golden Eagles (24-4) outpaced Greensburg Central Catholic 61-45 in the PIAA Class 2A semis matchup at North Allegheny High School. Kennedy Catholic held a three-point lead after the first quarter, and extended its advantage to 36-21 at the half. Trailing 51-29 heading to the fourth, GCC (23-7) trimmed its deficit nearly in half. But the Centurions never seriously threatened, despite 14 points from Mya Morgan, as well as a dozen from Jayla Petersen, and 11 points from Erica Gribble. In addition to Fields’ stellar effort, Monique Vincent poured in 17 points for Kennedy Catholic, while Tori Harvey added 11 points. Kennedy Catholic, the District 10 champs, will square off against District 6 representative Marion Center on Thursday at Noon at the GIANT Center in Hershey.
PIAA girls basketball second round game recaps from Tuesday, March 13th 2024:
Norwin 56 Chartiers Valley 47 (5A) WATCH BROADCAST
Norwin trailed 31-24 at halftime and was behind for much of the third quarter but the Knights used a big rally to defeat Chartiers Valley 56-47 in a PIAA Class 6A second round contest at Peters Township's AHN Arena. Norwin went on a 9-2 run midway through the third quarter to tie the game at 33-33 and the game remained knotted after three. The Knights took the lead for good as Lauren Palangio's layup with under six minutes left made it 41-40. Kendall Berger then connected on two straight jump shots followed by baskets from Averi Brozeski and Bella Furno which put Norwin in front by seven points and put the game away. Palangio's 16 points were a game-high for the Knights (23-3) while Berger and Furno ended with 15 and 12 points respectively. Ella Cupka and Leah Turnbull each tallied 13 points for the Colts (17-9). Norwin will next face District 1 second seed Spring-Ford in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Rams (25-6) defeated Peters Township 74-53 in the second round.
Greensburg Central Catholic 54 West Middlesex 45 (2A)
A strong start helped power Greensburg Central Catholic past West Middlesex, 54-45, in a PIAA Class 2A second round match up at North Allegheny. Mya Morgan's 15 points lead the Centurions who stormed out to a 19-5 lead through the first eight minutes. GCC (22-6) will meet District 5 champion Everett (20-7) on Friday at a site and time to be determined. The Warriors secured a 48-40 victory over South Side Beaver in the second round.
