A number of the areas top middle school wrestlers took to the mat over the weekend, competing in the 13th annual Junior High Southwest Regional Tournament at Kiski Area. The tournament, which is made up of WPIAL schools, began Friday and concluded with the championships and consolation finals on Saturday afternoon.

Norwin captured the team title, finishing with 275 points. The Knights had a total of 12 placewinners with Noah Curren winning the 140 pound championship. Eli Bechtold (82) and Jonah Fierle (212) both earned silver medals.

Derry Area boasted the most champions with four, taking second place registering 230 points. Securing gold medals for the Trojans were Mason Keesecker (96), Camden Olson (124), Will McNeal (147) and Ty Blasko (157). Mikey McNeal was a runner-up at 110 pounds.

Derry Area's finish was the highest a Class AA school ever placed in the tournament.

Also in the team race, Connellsville placed third with 169.5 points followed closely by Kiski Area (168.5) and Greater Latrobe (166) to round out the top five.

West Allegheny's Jack Stonebraker was voted as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. He won the 103-pound title by technical fall over Baldwin's Shamil Islamov, 21-5, in 3:46.

Kiski Area's Mario Hutcherson and Norwin's Landon Sidun had won OW the previous two years.
